The Phoenix jersey in light blue with an embroidered number 11 on the middle pocket. Number 11 in the 1974 race was Felice Gimondi, riding for Bianchi-Campagnolo. Going further back in the bike racing time machine is Rapha's new Team jerseys, which focus on 1974, the year Merckx won his fifth and final Giro d'Italia. The Belgian great, riding for Molteni, saw great challenge from Gianbattista Baronchelli, riding for the SCiC team. After a hard fought three weeks, Merckx eked out a 12-second triumph over the young Italian, which remains the smallest winning margin in the race's long history. Fellow Italian, and then world champion Felice Gimondi (Bianchi-Campagnolo), was third.
Gimondi was one of only seven men to win all three Grand Tours during their career. He won the 1965 Tour de France as a 22-year-old neo-pro, won the Giro d’Italia three times in 1965, 1967 and then in 1976, defeating Eddy Merckx at 34 and winning the penultimate stage in Bergamo, and also won the 1968 Vuelta a España. "The Phoenix" was enormously successful at one-day races too, winning the World Championships in 1973 along with victories at Paris-Roubaix (1966), Milano-Sanremo (1974) and the Giro di Lombardia twice (1966 and 1973).
