The explanation he was expecting, wasn’t the one he got. Unsure of what she was talking about in the first place. He’d only been himself, something he didn’t always do with others. And he thought the same of her, yet now he wasn’t so sure she had done the same with him. “Veronica…” He started slowly, trying to get his thoughts in order before he got it all out there. Nothing coherent came to mind as he went through what he should have said out loud. His thoughts a jumbled mess compared to how he felt moments ago. “What part of it is a lie?” The tone of his voice came restrained, holding in the anger and pain he felt in that moment. He had put all of this together for the two of them, and now he regretted even trying. One of the few times he threw himself out there for someone, and it only came to bite him in the ass. “You couldn’t decide on a better environment to tell me in? Or I don’t know, before? You aren’t even making any sense right now.” 

❝What PART of it is a lie?              ALL of it. At least ... on your part.❞ Veronica knew she wasn’t making much SENSE. At least when it came to him. In her mind it had clicked from the very beginning and no matter how much she wanted to IGNORE it, she simply couldn’t any more. Not when her heart BEGGED her to tell the truth. Even if for just a LITTLE bit of peace. The blonde shook her head and held back ACTUAL tears now as she sat there watching him grow more confused and upset. And who could BLAME him? She had just pulled the worst trick on him of all. 

❝I WANTED to tell you but I ....❞ She what? COULDN’T? Didn’t WANT to bad enough? What was it? Veronica had SEVERAL opportunities to tell the truth. To let him down EASY, but it wasn’t what she had wanted. All she DID want was for his affections to be true and to continue treating her as though she was the only one that MATTERED in his world. But her guilty conscious had finally gotten the better of her despite this NOT being the best time to drop such a bomb. ❝This isn’t what you WANT and you don’t even KNOW it.❞

❝Oh. You mean SURROUNDED by men wanting something from me? That’s USUALLY my element. Just not ... like THAT I guess.❞ Veronica gave a shrug of her shoulders. She would LIKE to play this off as something NOT scary - but even she knew better. If he hadn’t been around to HELP something would have happened. Something that she WOULDN’T have been okay with, one way or the other. So she’d SMILE and act the part of grateful as she continued to clean up his face some before dropping her arms back down to her sides. ❝You seemed to be PERFECTLY within your own though. You go around saving PRETTY girls a lot?❞

𝐅𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐊'𝐒 𝐁𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐃. no, he hadn’t been a very aggressive kid when he was growing up, but soon after moving in with bruce? the billionaire had made sure he knew how to fight. dick had made it a point to keep up with his training, and he knew that he wanted to do whatever he could to protect the streets  — in and out of costume. dick kept going until the guys eventually backed off and he wiped at his lip, looking over at the blonde when she put her hands on him.   ❝  are you?  ❞  he asked, his eyes meeting hers. he’d handled hits before from guys a lot stronger than the ones he’d just chased off ( the joker and riddler had some pretty intense henchmen ), but all he cared about right now was if this girl was going to be alright.

❝Are you KIDDING me?❞ Veronica SMILED brightly within that dank alley way and her laughter BOUNCED off of its walls in a faint echo. Was SHE alright? They hadn’t even laid a hand on her. The girl NODDED as she raised one hand SLOWLY - as to not startle him - and wiped a splatter of blood from his cheek. Had that been his OWN, or theirs? He didn’t seem to bothered by its presence so perhaps that was an answer in of itself but really, she didn’t figure it mattered much in the end. As long as they were both standing and SAFE. Veronica’s smile grew somewhat as she tilted her head to the side and EXAMINED him up and down, looking for any more injuries. ❝That was kind of AMAZING. You know that right?❞

The night he planned was one he never wanted either of them to forget. Even the collar of his shirt scratching at his neck couldn’t distract him from the beauty sitting across from him, hand placed across the table to hold hers. Ben had planned this date for a few weeks now, needing the perfect location to sweep her off her feet. Their view from the private room they were eating in didn’t disappoint, leaving the two of them to enjoy the night without any other patrons getting in the way. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, though the comment did throw him off guard, head tilting with his expression changing to one of confusion. “Do…do you not like it? We could go somewhere else if the food isn’t to your satisfaction.” Something in the pit of his stomach told him this wasn’t about the food, or the location of dinner. It was something more, her expression and body language telling him more than he wanted to admit to himself. “Why can’t you? Everything has been going fine, what’s changed?” He couldn’t beat around the bush even if he tried, the night already feeling ruined by a simple statement.

Veronica felt a PANG of guilt upon hearing the heartache in Ben’s voice. She didn’t LIKE that she was so clearly the cause of it, but she couldn’t keep on pretending everything was fine between them either. Now, of course it SEEMED fine to anyone looking in, but she knew better. She KNEW that no matter what, he’d stick around by her side through thick and thin - but it wasn’t really his CHOICE. Not after she had spent so much TIME manipulating his feelings. Making him DESIRE her more and more over every other choice out there. It wasn’t FAIR to either of them at this point and despite it being a rather large development of character for the blonde, she HATED it all the same. How she WISHED she could simply keep him around and play the happy couple. How she WISHED that she could believe it was real - but she couldn’t. Not to HIM. 

❝That’s just the THING Ben.               ❞ How could she explain it to him in a way that he would understand? YEAH YOU THINK YOU LOVE ME BUT IT’S NOT REALLY REAL BECAUSE BASICALLY MAGIC? There was no way that would work. It would surely end up with him calling her a lair and not believing it for a second. Instead she just shook her head again and lent back in her chair. She took their surroundings in and noted that this was THE MOST romantic date she had ever been on and that made the pang in her chest ache even more. How she WISHED it were real. The blonde bit her bottom lip for a long moment before sighing. ❝It’s just a LIE.❞

“Just trying to sort through all of this shit. Care to leave the attitude behind?” He muttered in a soft grumble as if there was actually anything on the line. Despite his initial recourse, he needed information, and it seemed like the only people he’d be able to get close enough to talk to without being questioned by the actual authorities themselves were those on the outskirts. So, there he was, left with no other choice than the blondie with her seemingly ‘whatever’ expression.

“A ride home?” He figured he could manage it, though, perhaps if only he was on better terms with the reporting officers. Taking another glance around before drawing back upon her again, Diego pursed his lips in a short attempt to call her bluff. “If you can get names, I’ll personally escort you home.” The deal had been made, but hadn’t been secured, at least not on his end, though, if he could provide enough of a distraction, he could get the two reunited for a few minutes. It was all just a slip of the wrist, and a few minor incident with some knives. “We got a deal?”

❝God yes. I am SO ready to get out of here.❞ And with that she was gone. Yes, his mind had been whirring trying to come up with a distraction but she didn’t need it. With a SMIRK she slipped passed him and as heels clicked upon the ground, she made her way TOWARDS the flashing lights of the nearby police cars. There wasn’t an OUNCE of fear or hesitation upon angelic features. Veronica KNEW there was no threat here. Now that she had a PURPOSE, she went in head first. With a SMILE here, and a touch of the arm THERE, the blonde was at the window she had targeted within MOMENTS. It was rolled down with EASE after nothing but a simple PLEASE and a flutter of her eyelashes. TOO EASY. 

With a pen and paper pulled from her bag, Veronica began to write as the poor boy almost SPILLED his guts right then and there for her. If she had WANTED to put in all of the hard work, she’d have made a GREAT interrogator if not only due to her natural ADVANTAGE. Her powers came into handy in more ways than one, and despite no one KNOWING about them here, she proved it several times over. There was a LEAN FORWARDS as a gentle kiss was placed upon the handcuffed boys cheek and then she was GONE. Leaving him behind with a dazed smile upon his face - a rather CURIOUS expression due to his current state. But one that Veronica knew all too well. With a raised brow and a wicked GRIN of triumph, Veronica held the piece of paper out for him once she got close enough. TEN names were printed neatly upon paper and she sighed softly as if it were nothing besides a minor NUISANCE. ❝There. Is that good ENOUGH? Can we GO NOW?❞

❝You know what? NO. No, this has gotta STOP.            Just, please. Stop.❞ Despite the words being of HARSH meaning, Veronica’s tone was anything but. Her words were almost whispered, spoken softly like a PLEA and her head SHOOK with determination. She couldn’t allow this to go any further - not when her own FEELINGS were starting to get involved. This wasn’t supposed to HAPPEN. Veronica had flings. Nothing more. Nothing SERIOUS, just some FUN before she moved on to the next. But how long had the two been together now? MONTHS? 

Veronica hadn’t kept track, didn’t WANT to watch as the seconds ticked by. She didn’t want to WATCH as the dazed sparkle in his eye never once wavered - showing her just how FAKE it was from the start. At the beginning it wasn’t an issue of course, she figured she’d grow BORED within the week but to her surprise she hadn’t wanted it to end. And so she hadn’t ALLOWED it to. Gentle brushes of her fingertips against Ben’s bare skin SECURED that fate and it had all led to THIS. An evening planned by him, dripping in romance and she knew deep down that she didn’t DESERVE it. After all, the love wasn’t REAL. And so with another shake of her head, the blonde took a step back from his GENTLE embrace and held her hands SECURELY against her chest. She couldn’t risk sending him further down that blinded path. ❝I can’t keep doing THIS.❞

There was a lot of moving pieces here, but to slide past the rest of the force was enough for Diego to get into the questioning mode as he managed to slip through and speak to the other, though it didn’t seem to be doing much good anyways. “I can think of a few worse things than being stuck here.” He muttered off with a brief glance to anybody who may have had their suspicions about him. “Look, I’m not here to make things even more unfair, but this whole fight—it runs a lot deeper into the city than what’s happening on face value alone. There’s more here than meets the eye, underground shit and all that, so we’re trying to get to the bottom of it as fast as we can.” Or at least, that’s what Diego was trying to do, connecting this with other fights breaking out across the city recently.

❝Underground SHIT huh?         What an ... UNPROFESSIONAL way of putting it.❞ Veronica rolled her eyes at this and crossed her arms in front of her chest. She didn’t much CARE for the big picture of things, just that her evening was RUINED. She’d ultimately find someone else to occupy her time - perhaps someone NOT linked in shady back room deals. But until then? She’d have to DEAL with the problem at hand. Which was CURRENTLY the ‘detective’ looking around as if he was about to get CAUGHT doing something wrong. Veronica didn’t CARE though what he was going through and therefore she’d merely CLICK her tongue and cock her head to one side. 

❝Alright how about THIS, you let me talk to him for ... what, FIVE MINUTES? I’ll get whatever names you wanna know, and then I get a RIDE home. Deal?❞ Despite being a petite blonde and looking anything BUT intimidating, she knew she could get what he wanted. After all, the DATE now being cuffed hadn’t known her more than a few hours and already had toted her around wherever she had wanted to go. NOT of his own free will either. She had her WAYS of getting what she wanted.
