Witch Hat Atelier Manga Spoilers!
Thinking about Qifrey discribing the ink from the Silverwood tree as it's 'literal blood' and brushbuddies looove ink!
Shrimp no.1 and no.2
A Witch Hat Atelier theory for Pride Month. Olruggio may have his memory erased about the silver wood taking over Qifrey, but unconsciously he has been inventing new forms of fire magic to find a flame that can burn the silver wood inside Qifrey to save him.
Adding to this. We know Qifrey can’t be the one who tells Olruggio about the tree inside him because the tree will take over him the moment Olruggio makes him feel safe. Coco is the only one who knows Qifrey’s secrets without giving the same effect because it is Qifrey who has the responsibility to make his students feel safe under his care. Which is why Coco must be the one to tell Olruggio about the silver wood tree, only then can Olruggio know about the tree without having his memory erased, but Qifrey can’t know he knows.
some people are worried that if chapter 40 gets adapted in the last episode of the anime they will have to defend qifrey from the justified rage that will result. as someone who went through that Experience recently I gotta tell you, I think it’s actually so healthy to hate qifrey a little bit. like yeah I was calling him a fuckass snake and whatnot, and I was wrong about him, but it sure got my blood pumping. what a weasel!!!! see?? that was cathartic. there's something so incredible about him being "evil" in a way you can’t comprehend yet. his serial killer charm......
I do think about how Qifrey's actions in chapter 40 were ofc shocking at the time but seemingly made sense. We knew the stigma of eyesight when it came to witches - had seen it play out with Tartah, even. We knew that he wouldn't want to bring Olruggio down with him, because for all his recklessness, he tried to only let it affect himself. We knew he'd wiped Nolnoa's memory, so he had a track record when it came to that. It was just the lines he was willing to cross were seemingly so much further than we had previously believed
So, the pieces seemed to fit together, right? Sure, a few bits didn't quite follow through. Qifrey may want to keep Olruggio out, but he knew his Watchful Eye was willing to lie to the Knights Moralis for him. He knew that Olruggio was questioning him out of concern rather than to actually turn him in.
But, it made sense for the most part, and we knew we didn't have the whole picture yet, so those little inconsistencies were things that you could let slide. After all, Qifrey was fairly self-destructive, so this was just a continuation of that, right? He was desperate in his quest and that was leading towards him going further and further into the mire
And then you bring in the chapters up to 93 and all of a sudden, there's this whole new layer. The deteriorating eyesight is still a factor as it sets a time limit on how long Qifrey can go after the Brimhats on his own. But it's far from the main thing. Qifrey's desperation was never that of vengeance, not truly. It's a desire to steal back his future. He had outright told us this in chapter 40! And the line everyone was so shocked he was willing to cross was actually one tied around his own throat. Wiping Olruggio's memory wasn't something he'd do willingly. So, a load of those discrepancies in the old explanation just fall away.
All the weight Qifrey had previously put on how much memory makes up a person was from experiencing both sides of the story. He's both the one whose memory was wiped and the one who saw Olruggio kill his own self for him time and again. And that's another thing! We thought it made sense he prioritised memory so much because he himself was amnesiac out of the coffin. Which, yes, that was a huge part of it, but there was even more to it
The best recontextualisation is that for which the foundations are laid so well you don't even realise there's a twist until the rug is pulled out from under your feet. Where you don't realise the pieces you're missing until they slot into place and, at last, you see the full picture
just read chapter 40 of witch hat atelier and my initial reaction was, "what the hell just happened?" but after rereading it, i think i've come to better understand qifrey's motives.
(wha chapters 40, 88-92 spoilers, sorry, again, sorry)
What makes the tragedy of Orufrey so accessible and equally painful for anyone is that, no matter how you see the nature of their relationship — sexual, romantic, family, or simple friendship — their horror lies in the inability to have a fully honest, platonic relationship. They are never able to be entirely close friends.
Qifrey is never able to do what friends do — seek comfort in another. And he would find himself guilty of wishing to — Qifrey is prone to hiding his wounds. But even if Qifrey feels undeserving of love, he is unable to let Olruggio love him back. He is unable to let Olruggio find him. He will never be able to weep in his arms and let Olruggio whisper words of comfort to him that he knows he does not deserve, but so much secretly wishes to hear.
And Olruggio is forever stuck in a cycle of doubt about whether he really knows his friend. He is forever bound to uncovering Qifrey’s secret and to questioning time and time again whether the man he has seen grow since childhood — immature, wise, emotional, and numb — can still scare him. Olruggio can never know that exactly because he understands Qifrey so well, they both suffer. His kindness is their shared curse.
It’s Qifrey’s inability to be fully vulnerable with his friend, and Olruggio’s inability to know he is enough. No matter if they touch each other — Qifrey’s inability to cry in his arms, and Olruggio’s inability to cradle his head — kiss each other — Qifrey’s inability to silence Olruggio’s honesty with his mouth, and Olruggio’s inability to soothe Qifrey’s nervously clutching wrist with his lips — lie down with each other — Qifrey’s inability to wrap his limbs around Olruggio silently asking to stay, Olruggio’s inability to trail over Qifrey’s scars with fingers. No matter what relationship they have or wish to have, the result is the same.
They are unable to do it fully.
OH MY GOSH CHAPTER 92. What if I loved you so much it ate me alive and the only way for me to survive would be to keep a distance between us that you are not allowed to understand because the understanding would be enough of a relief for the curse to take me again
Sail sleeping skies, the stars like silver ships / Till rapt in branches, set course for world adrowse / To pass the gift of night to Silverwood lips / And sink as fingers in her tousled boughs.
Chapter 47 // Chapter 92
Spoilers for chapter 40, 91, and 92 for Witch Hat Atelier... I have so many thoughts
The parallels between the newest chapters and chapter 40 is genuinely making tweak the hell out, theres really no happy ending for them huh
Qifrey is willing to let himself teeter between life an death to feel a fraction of Olruggio's love, and Olruggio is stuck in a never-ending cycle of feeling like his love and devotion for Qifrey isn't enough to be seen by Qifrey. While Qifrey has to live through every single moment of Olruggio's memory of his vulnerability being wiped, Olruggio has to see Qifrey suddenly distance himself after every sacrifice he's made for him. Both of them feel like they can never reach the other.
Every single part of Qifrey that makes him who he is, is a by-product of Olruggio's love and kindness. The glasses that helps him see, his career as a professor, his atelier in the countryside, and his very life are all made possible by Olruggio. But to Olruggio, no matter what he does, it is never enough for Qifrey to be at peace. He can come up with contraptions to aid Qifrey's disability, he can follow Qifrey down to the countryside outside of the Great Hall, he can give up the big career that was pretty much lined for him as 'The Torch' to become a Watchful Eye, hell he can even sacrifice his memory; but none of it will EVER be enough.
But even so, at the end of the day every single time his memory gets erased; his flame of devotion for qifrey never dies out because to Olruggio, loving Qifrey is easier than breathing.
