I like girls and guys and I really want to come out but my friends make jokes about people who are gay, lesbian, and bi. What do I do

My best advice would be to try to talk to your friends about the jokes they’re making. Not necessarily in a confrontational way, but I’d definitely ask them why they’re joking about things that really aren’t funny. All joking about sexuality does is make it okay to continually ostracize LGBTQ+ people. “Jokes” perpetuate hatred because they’re just “jokes.” I would see how they react to what you have to say to them before you come out to them. It may take a while, but hopefully they’ll stop making gay and lesbian jokes, especially if they know that their friend isn’t okay with them. Definitely gauge how they react. If they react with understanding rather than getting defensive then I think it would be okay to come out to them if you’re ready. Just make sure that you’re ready though and make sure that it’s safe to come out. If you live in an area where people are more opposed to the LGBTQ+ community or are violent towards LGBTQ+ people, then I wouldn’t recommend coming out. Just make sure you’re safe!!! Sorry this is long, I really hope this helps. I’m always here ❤️

Edit: also, if there’s someone else that you could talk to like a counselor, teacher, family member, or advisor of some sort you could also talk to them as well. It helps to talk to adults that we trust. I saw a therapist and I would tell her just about everything. I didn’t have the chance of coming out to her before she finished her doctoral internship but I plan on coming out to my next counselor. Someone like that is ideal :)
