when we talk about giving disabled roles to disabled actors lets not forget about how these shows or films telling a disabled persons story also need to be hiring disabled writers, consultants, directors and producers because the only way you're going to be able to successfully tell our stories is if you hire us to help you tell them.

Hiring a disabled actor is a great start but it doesn't do much good if the writing is ableist and the story isn't accurate or realistic. Disabled people telling their stories is just as important as disabled people portraying a disabled character.

You can’t go to parties, clubs, concerts, or bars, the places where young adults like to hang out the most. The music is overstimulating, the dancing is too hard on your body, the alcohol doesn’t mix well with your meds or your symptoms, and you can’t stay out late because you’re way too fatigued for that.

I wish doctors would realise that chronic pain and chronic illnesses can cause mental illness. they have no problem immediately jumping to the conclusion that someone’s (specifically a women/someone presenting as female) chronic pain/other symptoms are being caused by a mental health issue but never bother to consider the fact that their patient is depressed or anxious because they're experiencing crippling pain, fatigue and other debilitating, sometimes even scary symptoms. Diagnosing someone early on and treating their psychical  symptoms will do wonders for their mental health but first doctors need to stop immediately assuming a mental health problem is the main cause.

Just because a disabled person doesn’t do something that has been suggested to them (even if it has been suggested by a medical professional) that doesn’t mean they’re refusing treatment and not trying to improve their health. in the past, before being formally diagnosed, I took everyone’s (bad) advice because I wanted to get better so badly but the results were catastrophic to my physical and mental health. I have had input from specialists who know a lot about my conditions and what I should and shouldn’t be doing but occasionally someone will suggest something, sometimes that someone is a doctor with no experience in treating my conditions, and yes I may immediately refuse if they suggest I do something that I know won’t be good for me and I shouldn’t have to be made to feel bad about refusing to do something that will hurt me. I shouldn’t be made to feel like a stuck up lazy person who is just refusing to make an effort. I follow my treatment plans, listen to the doctors that know how to treat my conditions, I’e learnt not to go over my daily limits and I’m doing the best I can. Nobody has the right to say I’m not doing anything to help myself when I spend everyday doing just that just because I don’t follow bullshit advice that came straight from a Facebook post.

hey friends,

this is ted. ted is my brother’s cutie patootie corgi mix puppy. he went to the vet to get neutered a little over a week ago, and ended up getting sick. he’s been back to the vet twice since he got neutered, and today they admitted him…he will be at the vet on IV antibiotics until wednesday. he has some swelling/pain in one of his back legs, which the vet thinks may be due to an internal abscess, but they’re not sure yet. if it is, it’s going to require surgery, which will probably cost $1000+. as it is, my brother is already paying $500 for the vet stay

my brother is a great guy, and he’s going to graduate from college in may. in the meantime, he is working as a part time leasing agent for an apartment complex, and doesn’t have a lot of money to spare. for those of you who are familiar with the personal & family drama i overshare on the internet, i am currently working part-time in a retail job & am having a hard time making ends meet. my parents got divorced about a year ago, my dad has been in and out of hospitals for his own physical & mental health problems, and my mom lost our house back in may, so as you can imagine, they don’t have much to spare either.

ted has been an amazing companion for my brother, who is dealing with his own depression & anxiety. if anyone is able to help pitch in to cover teddy’s vet bills, we would greatly appreciate it. for anyone who is able/willing to pitch in a couple of dollars, my paypal is [email protected]. i would also appreciate if you’re able/willing to share this. i will update with more info as i get it / if a gofundme gets set up

if you only support mentally ill people who are in a good place and trying to recover then you don’t support mentally ill people.

if you only support chronically ill people when they “don’t let” their illness get in the way of things then you don’t support chronically ill people.

if you only support disabled people when they’re happy and being inspiring then you don’t support disabled people.

you either support us all no matter what or you don’t support us at all. You don’t get to pick and choose based on who is a ‘good disabled person’ or not.

Having both physical and mental heath problems can be so annoying especially when doctors play them off against each other.

 If I try to get help for a physical health issue and the doctor finds out I have mental health issues they will tell me my mental health is to blame and that I need to go away and get treatment for those issues if I want my physical health to improve and vice versa. 

 Maybe if they actually worked together to treat both the physical and mental health problems at the same time things may actually improve for their patients but nah it’s easier to just shift the responsibility onto someone else and let the patient suffer in the mean time.

“people shouldn’t self medicate or take prescription drugs that aren’t prescribed to them”

ok I agree but sometimes people, specifically people with lifelong chronic illnesses, don’t always have access to medication or any other treatment they might need. This causes them to self medicate with unhealthy coping mechanisms and yes it leads to addiction, it leads to abuse of medication and it can also lead to mental health issues, self harm and suicide. instead of judging those who do this (especially within the spoonie community because I’ve seen this happen lately) ask yourself why this is happening, why can’t people access help and support for their chronic pain and also why can’t they get the help they need for any addictions they may develop as a result of self medicating. I don’t think self medicating or using unhealthy coping mechanisms is okay but we need to ask ourselves why this is happening. Why is this an issue? Why do people need to self medicate? I’ve been there myself when I was desperate and we need to show more compassion and understanding to people who are in those situations instead of making them feel shit which may stop them from seeking the help that they so desperately need.
