Sorry these took so long! I got really out of the groove of writing but Iâm back baby!!
(Takes place in a âthe boys liveâ AU as usual, though doesnât have to be mine)
Paul is the first of the boys Sam gets close to
Heâs the most natural around the Emersons, and likes to start up conversations with them
Heâll chat with Sam when him and the boys come to visit Michael or grab him for a night out
Their first moment of real bonding was when Paul chimed into a conversation Sam was trying to have with Michael about a recent movie, and Sam kind of just went :-0 because he realized he finally had someone to talk about that kind of stuff with
Really mild mentions of drugs under the cut
They hang out casually a lot more after that and get really close, building up inside jokes and an easy familiarity
Theyâre the kind of people that can have conversations that are unintelligible to others but make total sense to them
They have regular movie nights together to check out new stuff and for Paul to show Sam classics (a lot of which arenât as cool as he remembers them being)
Paul lays on the couch upside down and has Sam drop popcorn in his mouth, and yells and points at the screen emphatically when twists happen
They paint each otherâs nails and Paul is an enabler when it comes to some of Samâs more drastic appearance changes over the years, whether that be hyping up/twinning really weird outfits he makes, or giving him funky haircuts and dye jobs
Samâs a good kid, but when him and Paul hang out their energies racket up and they usually get pretty rowdy
Lots of well meaning roughhousing/in house flying tricks that end in a few more bruises or dented walls than they intend for them to, but they laugh a lot, and never rat each other out
(Though to be fair they donât have to since both of them have that guilty puppy look whenever Lucy confronts them)
Although heâs generally more aloof, Paul shows on several occasions that heâs a great support for Sam and a great listener
He can usually give somewhat decent relationship advice, and even when he canât, heâs still always open if Sam needs a good squeeze or cuddle to comfort/ground him
Paulâs the king of cheering Sam up in general
Itâs partly because he comes up with a lot of pretty ridiculous ideas, ones absurd enough that anyone would laugh at them, but he just has a positive energy to him too
Either way Sam can never stay sad around him for too long
Whenever Paul gets Sam to smile, gets him to laugh when heâs having a hard time, he gets this really soft look on his face
Thatâs it kid, thatâs the Sammy I know
He loves seeing Sam happy because that makes him happy
They have a lot of long debates about movie plots, and are always in motion when they do
Hopping on Samâs bed, swinging their legs in a chair, or playing with something on the side are all common occurrences
They team up to non fatally prank Michael and David pretty often, but are both very strict mommaâs boys that will respect Lucy and try not to mess up things too bad or go too far
Paul is the person Sam first tries drugs with, just smoking some weed, and Paul makes sure heâs safe and reassures him when he coughs a lot and says he doesnât really like it
They try edibles a different time before Sam decides they just arenât his thing
Paul ruffles Samâs hair a lot and gives him a ton of nicknames
Little dude, bud, bucko, Sambo, etc.
Although he has different and important relationships with all the boys, Paul is the one that Sam can always come to when he doesnât want things to be complicated
Sometimes that can have its own issues, when Sam wants comfort for something he doesnât want to talk to the others about but Paul just doesnât⊠get it, but as mentioned above thereâs always the cuddle option, which is usually good enough for Sam
If itâs really not something Paul can help with, Sam will just take some alone time with Nanook
Paul and Nanook actually get along pretty well
The group rotates dog walking regularly so Paul will take Nanook to the park or dogsit if Lucy asks
They have very similar energies and Paul likes to get on Nanookâs level a lot, whether that be running with him on all fours, taking a nap with him on the floor, or, on one occasion, seeing what the fuss about dog treats was
And no, David, it wasnât just to make Sam laugh
Some of Samâs favorite days are when itâs the three of them, him, Paul, and Nanook, walking around town and checking out different shops, casual and easy, with a lot of teasing and noogies and oh shit the leash-!

Dwayneâs the last one before David to get actually close to Sam
Itâs not that he doesnât like him, heâs just kind of indifferent and still adjusting to the Emersons being around more often
The thing that sparks them hanging out more is Sam asking Dwayne to teach him how to skateboard
Heâs really not great at it (to start), but he gets better, and Dwayne is a good teacher, even though he laughs when Sam gets pissed about falling
It becomes a weekend/after homework thing
Dwayneâll drop by the Emerson house after sunset and knock, greeting whoever opens the door with a big smile and a hug, and then check in to see if Samâs done with school stuff
If he is, Sam rides with Dwayne down to the boardwalk, or if itâs too busy there somewhere else with decent pavement
Theyâll practice until Sam starts complaining about scraped knees, and then either go join the rest of the boys and Michael, or split off so Sam can hang out with the Frogs
Dwayne steals gets Sam his own board for his birthday, and Sam covers it in paint and stickers
They click in a good way. Theyâre not as chill as Sam is with David or Lucy, but also not as chaotic as he is with Marko or Paul
Dwayne doesnât suggest anything dumb or risky, but he also goes along with Sam whenever he has an idea, even if itâs something like dying his hair neon green or doing archery practice in his room
Sam goes to Dwayne for pointers after he comes out, mostly because he doesnât think he can trust Marko or Paulâs advice about flirting
Sam is tentative when he asks about makeup, but Dwayneâs more than happy to teach him. He has Sam practice on him until heâs more comfortable, and wears the smudged and unsteady eyeliner with pride
When Star and Lucy arenât available, Dwayne helps Sam re bleach his hair (or dye it, hence the neon green hair incident)
In return, (once hes better at it) Sam does Dwayneâs makeup and hair before parties or big events. Heâs really good at braiding, and starts keeping a few hair ties on him at all times just in case theyâre needed
Dwayne picks up Sam a lot, for hugs or piggy back rides or to carry him on his shoulders, and thatâs probably when they get the most rowdy. Yeah, thereâs no flying allowed in the Emerson house, but has Sam still hit his head on the rafters anyway? Also yes. Multiple times (though itâs never too hard and heâs always laughing, so the bruises are worth it)
They get into really good conversations when theyâre alone together, whether skateboarding or picking out new eyeshadow or taking an Air Dwayne flight above Santa Carla
Sam just feels really comfortable and safe with Dwayne, like heâs not scared of messing something up or dumping too much on him, and Dwayne thinks Sam is a fucking great kid that deserves to hear stories he can relate to and feel supported by
Sam gets Dwayne to play video games with him and they both get very competitive. Sometimes Dwayne can be overheard humming soundtracks or boss battle themes
Sam talks a lot about MTV and pop culture, but besides the video game references Dwayne doesnât get any of it. Sure, he knows stuff about the artists and bands he listens to, but anything outside of that is foreign territory, and he never quite gets into it like Sam. Still, heâs super supportive
Even though the boys canât go with Sam and Michael during the day festivities of Santa Carla pride, they have their own mini celebration with the Emersons the evening of, and Dwayne carries Sam around on his shoulders almost the whole evening

Out of the boys, Markoâs the second one Sam gets close to after Paul, and itâs for a very... specific reason
Because they hate each other at first
Like... a lot
No one really knows why, just something about their vibes clashing, but every conversation between them ends in insults flying back and forth, and sometimes they have to be separated to cool off
And thatâs just how it is. For months. Sam hates Marko, Marko hates Sam
And then one night, when Paul and Dwayne are out getting food and Davidâs out with Michael, Sam thunders into the cave looking totally out of sorts
Hes all wide eyed and fidgety, and it looks like he ran there
Marko makes his usual jab about Sam being a mommaâs boy a little far from home, but Sam doesnt even respond, just trudges over to look in the side nooks of the main room, like heâs searching for something
Marko flies over to tease him again, ïżŒand finally Sam snaps at him
âCan you shut up? I donât have time for this right now! Is-is Paul here?â
âWhy you wanna know? Those froggy friends of yours not wanna hang anymore?â
That only seems to make Sam more wound up. Heâs nervously squeezing his knuckles and rechecking the cave again and he looks frantic
âNo! I just gotta talk with him about something!â
âLemme guess, you missed your Saturday morning cartoons and need to know if Bobby bear escaped the volcano.â
âNo, god, fuck off Marko!â
âStrong words for such a little man.â
âCan you just leave me alone?!â Sam whips around to look at him and... fuck heâs crying
Marko kind of pauses, because while yeah, he thinks Sam is a little shit, hes never seen him cry like this before, not all angry and confused and trying to wipe the tears away like he doesnât know why theyâre there
And all of a sudden Markoâs fucking worried about this kid
âWhat the hell happened with you?â he asks
Sam tenses, glancing around one last time like he expects Paul to jump out from nowhere, and then turns back to Marko
His eyes kind of dart over his face a bit, like heâs deciding something, and then he averts his gaze and starts tugging at his shirt sleeves, his leg bouncing in place as he takes a deep breath
âUm I think I...â he swallows, âI think Iâm gay.â
Oh
âOh.â Marko floats down to the ground and kind of... well he doesnât really know what to do here
Sam looks mortified. Heâs flushed redder than a tomato and the leg bouncing has increased its tempo immensely
It reminds Marko of when he came out, standing in his parents kitchen andâ
No, no, itâs not gonna go that way
âSo do you wanna talk about it or what?â
Sam shakes his head a little, still very much not making eye contact, his foot tap tap tap taptaptaptapping. Marko sighs. The kid is gonna vibrate through the floor if he keeps going at this rate
âHey,â he puts a hands on Samâs shoulders, aiming for gentle, though heâs not sure he succeeds. âYouâre gonna be fine. Itâs... it can suck but youâre ok and itâs gonna be fine Iâll... you can talk to me about this shit if you want.â
Sam finally actually looks at him, and the relief there is... itâs weird
Marko removes his hands quickly and shakes them out. âYeah so, thatâs enough of that. Câmon, letâs hit the board walk.â
âWhat?â
He gestures at the entrance to the cave. âThe boardwalk, Sam. You need to blow off some steam or something, you look like shit.â
âOh.â
âPlus,â Marko adds as he tugs Sam towards the steps, âI canât make fun of you when youâre all weepy, itâs boring.â
They spend the rest of the night fucking around on rides and stuff, and Marko even convinces Sam to steal something small from one of the gift shops
After that itâs like a switch flips, and theyâre suddenly thick as thieves
They talk about fashion and clothes, Marko buys Sam patches for some of his older jackets and steals some of the shirts he wears less often, because âYou werenât using them anywayâ
Marko very much becomes the casual and slightly bad influence older bro who cares a lot
âDonât do what I do Sammy, unless I tell you to.â
Sam confides a lot in Marko abt queer stuff before he comes out to the others, and they end up bonding a lot over that.
Samâs really happy that Markoâs supportive. Even though he knew the guys werenât straight, he still had a lot of insecurities, and being able to talk and explore stuff and kind of test run different labels with someone was really comforting to him
With some coaxing he does come out to everyone else about a month later, Lucy first and then the rest of the guys, and finally the Frogs
Every once and awhile Sam wakes up to something thumping and finds Marko crawling in through his window. If heâs coaxed enough, heâll get up and get dressed and let Marko take him on some dumb late night adventure to an abandoned building or nearby tourist trap or whatever else has caught his eye
He gets caught coming back home about half the time, but Lucy canât stay mad at them since Samâs never actually gotten hurt. She still wishes they wouldnât do it on school nights though, since she already has a hard enough time getting Sam up in the mornings
Marko gives Sam a stick and poke tattoo of a little vampire face on his ankle when heâs 17
Sam forwards Edgar to Marko when he starts questioning stuff too (which Marko thinks is hilarious)
They still argue about stuff, but itâs about things like music and movies instead, both of which they have strong and differing opinions on
Markoâs not allowed to fly Sam around anymore because he dropped him into one of the bushes out back on his birthday once and Sam broke his arm

They donât like each other at first. David thinks Sam is annoying and clingy and Sam thinks David is mean and creepy and that his brother could do better
But, because of Michael, they end up hanging out a lot
David comes over in the evenings to wait for Michael to get back from work so they can go out, and usually that means he and Sam are stuck cohabitating in the living room or kitchen for an hour or so
Sam would do homework in his room, but they still havenât set up a desk for him and he refuses to work on the floor
So downstairs it is
They usually end up bickering a lot, exchanging vague insults or annoyed glances, and whenever David leaves he always puts on this shit eating grin and ruffles Samâs hair like heâs five
Sam hates it
In retaliation, he convinces Mike to let him tag along with them at least once a week, more if he thinks he can push it
David always looks pissed and annoyed, probably because he is
Thatâs why itâs weird when, at some point neither of them can pin down, their interactions stop being antagonizing
The hair ruffling becomes fond, they start genuinely talking while Sam does his homework, and Sam starts laughing when David intimidates shop owners into giving him prizes on the board walk instead of getting scared and going off to find the Frogs
David calls him âlittle manâ and âkidâ and actually pays attention when Sam talks about comics and music, sometimes chiming in with his own opinions or bits of historical info, but mainly just listening and nodding
On the other hand, Sam makes David feel more human again, hanging out with this kid that has so much spark and drive, smiling and laughing and trying to find where he fits in it all
He likes him. A lot.
Sam is one of the few people that can make David legitimately laugh, and though he always denies it when asked, he can feel himself soften up when the kidâs around
Samâs view of David eventually settles on: heâs Michael if Mike were actually cool (which is a sentiment David thinks is hilarious and finds every opportunity to tease Michael about)
Davidâs very protective of Sam, too, as are most of the boys. They donât kill anyone that messes with Sam, mainly because heâs asked them not to, but David will take the boys to certain kidsâ houses for some.... stern talking to, if he feels itâs needed
David also takes Sam on bike rides and lets him hang around with him and the boys when Michaelâs busy, but heâs adamant on not letting him do anything actually dangerous or illegal

It frustrates Sam a little. He thinks David and the boys are so cool, but they wonât let him do anything
So he decides to try and pierce his other ear one night, so he can at least have something cool and dangly like David and the others have, but he messes up and it just ends with a tissue pressed to his ear and a pricked finger
He forgot David was coming over to go out with Mike that night until the door to his room is slammed open and Davidâs frantic eyes land on him sitting on the edge of his bed
He seems to relax a little when he sees Sam, sighing as he closes the door behind him
âSmelled the blood from downstairs,â he says. âWhat happened here?â
Sam feels like heâs been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Thereâs no use in lying, David can always tell when heâs lying
âWanted another earring,â he says lamely, âdidnât go so great.â
David frowns slightly. âYou tried to pierce your own ear?â Sam nods and David immediately walks over to the bed and grabs Samâs wrist, pulling his hand away to examine his ear with concern
Sam hisses, but lets David look him over anyway
âYou didnât fuck up too bad, which is good. Donât try this again though Sam.â
Sam nods, squeezing his thigh. âYea, ok. Sorry.â
David sighs, letting go and pushing off the mattress. âIâll grab some ice, clean off the needle if you havenât already. Weâll do this right.â
Sam blinks in disbelief, eyes wide. David pauses when he reaches the door, glancing back with a smile thatâs a little kinder than Sam thinks he means it to be. âYou can just ask next time, ok kid?â he says. Sam nods, and the moment the door closes heâs rushing to the bathroom
Davidâs hands are gentle and firm, and by the next week Samâs new earring is just as dazzling as his smile
