Me ending up in a relationship with the boy was a shock and a half, considering that damn near every other date I’ve been on with men has been disastrous thanks to their fuckboyery, while I’ve been on dozens of dates with women and all were lovely. I once went out with a friend of a friend in college and we were talking about places we’d like to visit.
Me: I’ve always wanted to see Cameroon or Ghana.
Him: Yeah…no Africa for me, I have zero desire to go there.
Me: (eyes slowly narrowing)
Him: (blathers on, completely oblivious to the massive red flag he’s about to thrust in my face) I’d love to see Germany or Norway.
Me: (nearly squinting now) Well, that sounds nice.
Him: ‘Cause, you know, those places are clean. The people are clean and there’s no crime.
Me: Which you seem to be suggesting is not the case in Africa? Which is a massive continent full of thousands of different places, cultures, people, cities, societies, etc? And not just one enormous black hive mind of crime, poverty and filth?
Him: (rolls eyes) Come on, you know what I mean. People try to escape Africa, not vacation there.
Me: You know I’m black, right? My father was west African. Not like 1/20th either, he was full-blooded.
Him: Yeah, but you’re so pale. You’re not like, BLACK.
