doing my regular wolf 359 relisten and wondering when exactly goddard decided to fake the hephaestus crew’s deaths. I’m at the part where minkowski is talking to her husband’s secretary, and she mentions that the “shuttle accident” was “over a year ago”

this is happening on day 1081 of the mission

exactly a year ago would be day 716 which is right in the middle of the period after eiffel goes missing (day 666) but before minkowski calls command for help (day 782)

Hilbert’s christmas betrayal was day 580, just under a year and a half ago

So, as I see it, the main two options are either

a) as soon as command received the call on christmas, they immediately faked the crew’s deaths. The plan was for hilbert to kill them all and just because he failed doesn’t mean command was going to let them live

b) command said they would be closely monitoring the logs post-christmas and whatever minkowski said about the initial contact event/eiffel’s disappearance prompted them into action.

while I think the first is more likely, the second option would mean that - technically - the “shuttle accident” was not a complete lie

Ive always thought it was closer to the latter, with them faking the crews death after deciding that this was a contact event (or close enough to one that they werent allowing any witnesses). This is also when I imagine they started spinning up plans for what would become Keplers crew.

I think being immortal in like, the year 0 would be peak. You can spend all your time learning new skills and every once in a while hitch a ride with a travelling merchant or whatever to move towns. Nothing big ever changes and nobody tracks identities so id hust be a chill time to be immortal.
