I'm playing DA2 again...

I feel like if you really want to get a good idea of how Fenris feels about mages, have him and Bethany in the party during the first act. Sure, he can be won over by Mage Hawke, but you have control over that. Just letting Bethany and Fenris exist together gives a nice, unbiased interaction.

Their banter, more than once, has given the indication that he is very concerned for her. He talks of her being protected from others and herself. He speaks about how no one chooses their fate.

Merrill practices blood magic, and Anders is not only aggressive (poor, wounded soul that he is) he is also home to a spirit of the Fade. These are not average mages.

Bethany, for all she is an apostate, is just a mage. And Fenris is not hateful towards her. Cautious, sure, and concerned.

I see a lot of “blind hatred” Fenris portrayal in the Dragon Age fandom. And he is not that.

Anyhow, that’s just my little blurb for today.

I just recently started a new slowburn fenhawke fic and though I enjoy it, it's really become obvious to me how much the word 'snarling,' 'growling,' 'hissing,' and other similar verbs are used in regards to fenris' dialogue and i'm like?????? No???? Pleas stop?????

one of my biggest pet peeves in fanfiction is people using verbs like “growling”, “snarling”, “howling” and other aggressive wild animal-esque words for Fenris

ive done some simple name replacers, picking out some sentences from a couple fics where its done and realised how odd it sounds when you talk about say Hawke or Anders doing it, showing that its just completely unnecessary?? (arguably i see it more in fenders fics than anything)

in a small portion occasionally where its relevant, theres no explicit problem with those words its just that there is enough of a problem in relation to comparing Fenris to something less than human, aka. animalistic, and the connection between that and being a slave, without people in the fandom doing it (“he seems less a man to me than a wild dog” anyone?)

idk its just something that bothers me and ive noticed a lot

you know what happens when you live in a filthy abandoned mansion full of junk? you get mice, and if you get mice, you get cats. every single alley cat in hightown knows there’s a goddamn feast waiting for them at fenris’s place, and while he’s initially a little wtf about it, fenris gets very fond of his new friends. they’re more pleasant better company than the corpses and spiders when he gets lonely

okay this is less a headcanon and more a what-if scenario but imagine if fenris pulled a kitty pryde and phased through the floor to the room below during sex with hawke. and leandra was chilling in the room below and a naked elf just falls through the ceiling?

…which would probably all be a little too traumatising for everyone involved, so lets imagine he only falls through the bed. he recovers, and after the initial scare, hawke is very proud of himself.

he’s initially reluctant to properly get into a relationship, for obvious reasons, but when he does? he full on unashamedly adores Hawke, and he doesn’t care who knows. none of that tsundere “wow affection is gross and embarrassing” crap

pda isn’t especially common with fenris, but he’s been known to get a little clingy when he’s tipsy with everyone in the hanged man. hawke is more than happy to let fenris drape himself all over him. he’s especially delighted when fenris deigns to sit in his lap like it’s a throne.

♦ quirks/hobbies headcanon

cards. it takes him a while to learn the rules and recognise all the cards properly (there’s a banter with varric basically saying he bluffed his way to a win even though he had no idea what his cards meant lmao u go babe), but when he gets the hang of it. he’s good. for a while he’s only a few steps behind the resident rogues, and, to the surprise of everyone?

is a dirty fucking cheater. his pokerface is so excellent and he’s so deadpan and serious when he’s playing that no one realises for ages.

they figured him out eventually though, and he doesn’t win nearly as much any more. he’s not that upset about it.

also, there’s a lute in his bedroom, which is adorable. i hc that learned a little when he was still a slave, and while he’s not as good as orana, he’s pretty decent at playing it and likes to use it to pass the time sometimes

“I can’t even imagine…” Anders said, tears streaming down his face. “You were a *slave*…  The horrible things you saw… The horrible things that happened to you… blood magic… innocent children being murdered at the whims of heartless mages…”

“Yes,” Fenris said, hugging Anders. “It was horrible. But it is over now. I am free, and I am safe here in the south.”

“It never should have happened in the first place!” Anders said. His voice echoed with that of Justice as he went on: “It is because the Circles are weak in Tevinter that you suffered all of this abuse at the hands of my fellow mages.”

“Yes,” Fenris said quietly, suppressing the memories of the years of abuse in the Tevinter Imperium, and the unimaginable pain of receiving his markings. “Here in the south, you have Templars who hunt dangerous mages like Danarius, and real Circles that teach mages of the evils of blood magic, rather than just covering up its use.”

Anders nodded. “Things are better in the south,” he said. “Where mages are not allowed to harm people for their own gain—or worse, their own entertainment!—and where the Chantry ensures that Andraste’s law is followed, and slavery is forbidden.”

“Perhaps together,” Fenris said with a smile, “We can go to Tevinter, and bring the southern version of the Chant to them, and teach them that owning people is wrong, and that mages need to be monitored, lest they start using blood magic or become possessed by demons.”

“Aren’t you afraid?” Anders asked. He couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to return to a place where one had suffered so much. That Fenris was willing to do it just reminded Anders of how brave Fenris was, how strong, and how deeply he cared about other people. Fenris could have enjoyed his new found freedom and hid away in the south, but no! He continued to kill slavers, and now, he wanted to take the fight to Tevinter, to free others who had been in his position. Anders didn’t know what he had done to deserve such a selfless and daring lover, but he hoped that Fenris stayed in his life forever.

“No,” Fenris said. “I am not afraid. I have you to protect me.” Fenris was so beautiful in the candlelight. He had such soft hair and such firm muscles. Fenris’ eyes were the most beautiful shade of green Anders had ever seen, and they were so big that Anders could get lost in them.

“That’s right,” Anders said. “You have me, and I will protect you with every fiber of my being, until my dying breath.” Anders looked into Fenris’ big green eyes, so that Fenris would know that Anders meant this vow: “No one will harm you again, Fenris. Even if I have to kill every Maleficar on Thedas personally to protect you! If you want to go to Tevinter, to help others who are in the horrible position that you were once in, I will go with you, and we will be successful!”

i feel like the concern wrt mage/fenris ships is displaced and an unfair amount of expectations are placed on fenris… ive seen too many posts pulling the “don’t ship fenris with mages because he is mean to them” and it forgets a lot of crucial points?

Fenris’ mistrust and fear is born from abuse. I’ve discussed this before but, you know, bears repeating. The only mages Fenris has known up till meeting Hawke have been abusive. Have been monsters. Have thrown life away at a whim. Hadriana and Danarius physically, mentally, emotionally and (we know Danarius for sure) sexually abused Fenris. He was tortured. Him competing for the markings does not mean his abusers are absolved of their abuse… Fenris should’ve never had to compete for them, he wanted to free his family.

And Fenris CAN have a healthy relationship with a mage Hawke. It can be loving and caring and respectful. From what I recall, he can have a good friendship Bethany. Him reacting negatively to something that is distressing to him (blood magic, support of Tevinter) is a product of his abuse. Blood magic has only been used to hurt him. You can acknowledge that and accept he is allowed to hate it without condoning the things he says to Merrill.

i just think we should respect that and we should especially consider why we think FENRIS is the problem in all mage/fenris ships, why we think fenris is the one who has to take responsibility and bite his tongue and never mention his abuse for the sake of his lover’s comfort.

Stop the idea that...

Fenris is quick to anger and is some sort of cruel, hate-filled - raging character that just despises everything

That Fenris hates affection - seriously, did you see that end game kiss?

Fenris hates every single mage he comes by with a burning passion - because he doesn’t. Listen to his banter with Bethany, especially in Mark Of The Assassin and Legacy.

Anders tormenting of him is justified or that Fenris is the one to provoke it. All I can say about that is: listen to their banter, listen to their inflections

Along the line of banter - Fenris only calls Anders an abomination once

Fenris is broody and perpetually pissed about everything - HE SMILES, LAUGHS, JOKES, and is kind to those who are kind to him.

That Fenris hates all of Hawke’s companions - he calls them ‘friends’ all the time (including Anders)

START SPREADING THE IDEA THAT

Fenris is a very calm, controlled character

Fenris is pretty open about his relationship with Hawke. He wears their crest, a ribbon, says “I am yours” when traveling around, openly shows his jealousy (especially in MOA)

Fenris and Anders got off on the wrong foot and they stayed on that foot. Nothing will change that - but just because he doesn’t get along with Anders doesn’t make him a monster.

Fenris is smart - smart enough to know when to hold his tongue and when to express his opinion. Honestly, he gives his opinion rather freely and does so with unflinching honesty

He is an abuse survivor and because of that he is still coping and may be easily triggered. He’s been hardened because of it.

Fenris is a polarizing character, and because of that, most people either love him or hate him - and that’s okay!

Also, keep these in mind;

Fenris is not an alcoholic.  We see him drink all of what… twice? In game, and he exhibits none of the behaviors of an alcoholic. 

Fenris is a man who can admit he is wrong.  He is not afraid to say ‘I was mistaken.’  This may not be in any canonical dialogue or anything, but it seems obvious to me, especially regarding certain Mage Hawkes, or Bethany, or when Hawke hires Orana instead of making her a slave or letting her wander off into the wild blue yonder, or when he betrays Hawke in the Fade.

Fenris leaving Hawke was for the good of both of them.  He was emotionally mature enough to recognize that he couldn’t handle a relationship at that moment, and backed away to give them both time to come to terms with what happened.

Fenris is very aware that he hurt a romanced Hawke, and does not try to excuse himself from the blame.

Any anger he has towards Anders come act 3 is understandable, considering that Anders calls him ‘less a man than a wild dog’.  This is exceptionally awful for Anders to do, considering that Denarius called Fenris his little wolf, literally gave him that name.  Anders basically just echoed Denarius there. This is kind of ooc for Anders, but that’s another post.

Fenris speaks 3 languages.  I mean, damn.

He struggles to improve himself, even starts learning to read.  It seems as though he is all about making himself a better person than he was.

I’ve seen some posts - a lot of posts? It feels like a lot, the amount of teeth-gritting irritation I get whenever I see one - positing what would happen if Dorian met Fenris, and so far almost every single one I’ve seen has been some variation of “Dorian says something breathtakingly thoughtless and stupid, Fenris enacts violence upon his person.”

Every single time, I think, did these twerps even play the fucking games?

Fenris is a skilled, controlled warrior, whose battle comments are often calm and meditative. He doesn’t lash out physically when he’s angry, except in one remarkable case - when he killed Hadriana, a woman who had abused him for years, after promising not to. Verbally, he’s rude and blunt at worst - even to Anders, who is arguably cruel in what he says to Fenris.

Dorian is a man who fences with words and deflects with wit and sarcasm. His flippant comments are very intentionally flippant; the moment it’s time to be serious, he puts the facade away and speaks thoughtfully. He has a very good grasp of social graces and knows how to interact with others without friction - when he gets into arguments, it’s almost always because he chose to clash with the other person. He knows how to keep his thoughts to himself if he wants to.

It’s ridiculous to think that Dorian, if he met Fenris and possibly recognized him, would blurble on insipidly about meeting him when he was a slave, or the benefits of slavery, or gee, why don’t you think mages are just great??? or anything as vapid as that. Fenris would not attack him the moment he finds out Dorian is an altus/magister, he wouldn’t attack him if he didn’t like something Dorian said, he wouldn’t attack him even if Dorian’s brain was suddenly replaced by pudding and he said something so boneheadedly offensive everyone in the vicinity facepalms.

Fenris isn’t an abused animal with no housetraining and a hair trigger temper; Dorian isn’t a brown-skinned Bertie Wooster.

I love how in majority of fanfics Fenris refers to Anders as “the abomination” or simply “mage”, and that using Anders name is utterly unheard of. Yet I just went through all of Fenris’ dialogue and; 

He refers to Anders as abomination in 1 conversation, and it was simply him asking “Did I hear correctly?”. 

He calls Anders mage all of twice but only when Anders has said something to aggravate him, such as commenting on a FenHawke relationship, or KO’d “The mage is down.” but then Fenris is a snarky dick about everyone when they KO.

He hardly uses people’s names anyway when they’re in the party so :/ but he does refer to Anders as Anders when he does single him out eg. “Is there something you want, Anders?”
