It's actually so funny to me that some anti Shuggy people claim Shuggy fans don't "understand" & "mischaracterize" Shanks, but we were literally right about him not being over losing Buggy. Oda literally showed us that we got it spot on!
Shanks is ashamed of his family. He wanted to live a nonchalant life with his childhood bestfriend. He seems to have a complicated relationship with his twin brother. He's an alcoholic with a heart of gold and an inability to move on from the past. He has a martyr complex and is being pressured by those around him to fit a role. He has a hard time expressing his feelings when he knows they will cause conflict. A people pleasure to an unhealthy degree. A ride or die for those he cares about. A sad little boy who never got over his dad/captain being murdered right in front of him.
I actually think Shuggy fans understand Shanks quite well. It's non Shuggy fans who tend to misunderstand him because they hate how important the relationship with the clown is to his character.
