I think it's interesting how Hawkeye and BJ developed in almost the opposite ways. Based on a post from @bjs-dumb-hat I read where Hawkeye started as a jaded and cynical asshole, and developed to be open, sincere and vulnerable. While BJ started open, sincere and vulnerable and developed to be a jaded and cynical asshole (which I don't think BJ was always an asshole in the later seasons). It makes so much sense though, Hawkeye at the beginning was using jokes to mask the pain, which is something that he had been doing since before the series. But events such as Trapper leaving, or Henry dying gradually broke him down to the point he couldn't use jokes to mask his pain. While BJ was a devoted husband and father who hadn't been far away from Peg since they've been together, and despite him being faithful to him, he had cheated on her once, and found himself being attracted to another woman a different time. That coupled with the fact that he literally had a baby daughter too, and he was missing one of the most developmental stages of her life, caused him to release his frustration using pranks.
