Gothic architecture

Gothic architecture is a style of architecture that flourished during the high and late medieval period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture.

Originating in 12th century France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic architecture was known during the period as “the French Style” (Opus Francigenum), with the term Gothic first appearing during the latter part of the Renaissance. Its characteristic features include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress. Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less prominent extent, private dwellings. It is in the great churches and cathedrals and in a number of civic buildings that the Gothic style was expressed most powerfully, its characteristics lending themselves to appeal to the emotions. A great number of ecclesiastical buildings remain from this period, of which even the smallest are often structures of architectural distinction while many of the larger churches are considered priceless works of art and are listed with UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. For this reason a study of Gothic architecture is largely a study of cathedrals and churches. A series of Gothic revivals began in mid-18th century England, spread through 19th-century Europe and continued, largely for ecclesiastical and university structures, into the 20th century.

Gothic metal

Gothic metal or goth metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal music that combines the aggression of doom metal with the dark melancholy of gothic rock. The music of gothic metal is diverse with bands known to adopt the gothic approach to different styles of heavy metal music. The genre originated during the early 1990s in Europe originally as an outgrowth of doom/death, a fusion of death metal and doom metal. Lyrics are generally melodramatic and mournful with inspiration from gothic fiction as well as personal experiences.

Pioneers of gothic metal include Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, all from the north of England. Other pioneers from the first half of the 1990s include Type O Negative from the United States, Tiamat from Sweden, and The Gathering from the Netherlands. Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed the “beauty and the beast” aesthetic of combining aggressive male vocals with clean female vocals, a contrast that has since been adopted by many gothic metal groups. During the mid-1990s, Moonspell, Theatres des Vampires and Cradle of Filth brought the gothic approach to black metal. By the end of the decade, a symphonic metal variant of gothic metal had been developed by Tristania and Within Temptation. In the 21st century, gothic metal has moved towards the mainstream in Europe, particularly in Finland where groups such as The 69 Eyes, Entwine, HIM, Lullacry, Poisonblack and Sentenced have released hit singles or chart-topping albums. In the US, however, only a few bands such as HIM, Lacuna Coil, Evanescence and Cradle of Filth have found commercial success. Etymology The term gothic entered heavy metal music with the release of Paradise Lost’s Gothic album in 1991. Since then, fans have often been at odds with one another as to “which bands are, or most definitely are not, authentically Gothic”. Some musicians have disputed the gothic label associated with their bands, including Rozz Williams of Christian Death and Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy. In the gothic metal subgenre, members from such groups as After Forever, HIM and Nightwish have similarly downplayed or dismissed the gothic label from their music. Music

The music of gothic metal is generally characterised by its dark atmospheres. The adjective “dark” is commonly used to describe gothic music in general while other terms that are less frequently used include deep, depressing, romantic, passionate and intense. Gothic metal has also been described as “a combination of the darkness and melancholy of goth rock with heavy metal”. Allmusic defines the genre as a fusion of “the bleak, icy atmospherics of goth rock with the loud guitars and aggression of heavy metal” and further notes that “true goth metal is always directly influenced by goth rock - ethereal synths and spooky textures are just as important as guitar riffs, if not moreso”. Gothic metal is a varied genre with bands pursuing many different directions, from “slow and crushing variations” to “orchestral and bombastic”. The doom metal background of early pioneers like Anathema, Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride has been taken up by groups like Artrosis, Ava Inferi and Draconian. The black metal approach of Cradle of Filth, Theatres des Vampires and early Moonspell can be found in such subsequent bands as Graveworm, Drastique and Samsas Traum while the symphonic metal approach of Tristania and Within Temptation can be found in other groups like Epica, Sirenia and After Forever. Multi-platinum Chicago quartet Disturbed’s new album, Asylum was released August 31st via Reprise Records.

Disturbed front man David Draiman, guitarist Dan Donegan and drummer Mike Wengren, along with then-bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmak released their breakout debut The Sickness in 2000 and immediately began infecting heavy metal with hit singles like “Stupify” and “Down with the Sickness.” Their follow-up, Believe (2002) debuted at Number One on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. Current bassist John Moyer joined the band in 2003 and their next two releases, Ten Thousand Fists (2005) and Indestructible (2008) each also debuted at Number One, making Disturbed one of only six rock bands in history to have three consecutive releases debut at Number One. The band has sold in excess of 11 million records worldwide and had eight No.1 singles at Active Rock Radio. Smash hit “Inside the Fire” garnered the band their first Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2009. All these accomplishments have set the stage for Disturbed to open their Asylum.

Disturbed began building Asylum as soon as they got off the road in the summer of 2009. Officially entering Groovemaster Studios in February 2010, the band set about self-producing the album, as they did with Indestructible. Draiman declares, “This record shows a certain degree of maturation and enhanced complexity. Asylum is still identifiably Disturbed, but the evolution is clear. It preserves the elements of what we do but at a more advanced level.”

“We took our signature foundation, and we tried to build on that,” adds Donegan. “For every album, we’ve pushed ourselves even more than in the past. Asylum is no exception.”

There’s a duality to the title that encapsulates a thematic thread for Draiman. “The immediate connotation of the word Asylum is the image of a mental hospital or sanitarium, but it’s also meant to be a haven or a safe place,” says the singer. “The dual meaning of the word pushed things over the edge for me. The title track itself deals with the memory of a lost love driving you. You’re not able to let go of that memory and it brings you to the point of insanity. At the same time, that memory is a safe place for you; it’s a haven you go to when times are tough. Overall, this record is a reflection of that.”

First single “Another Way to Die” is classic Disturbed, blending a syncopated riff with a hypnotic hook. Donegan reveals, “Thematically, the song’s about global warming and how the choices we make affect the planet. It’s a new topic for us, and it’ll hopefully raise a little awareness.”

Storytelling remains a central component of Asylum. About “Animal,” Draiman states, “That song is huge. It’s written about someone who is an actual werewolf, and it’s inspired by films like Underworld and Wolfman. It’s about someone who enjoys the power and lives for the transformation.”At points, the lyrics become nearly cinematic in scope. Draiman goes on, “All of the songs deal with dramatic elements such as pain, loss, suffering and remorse. There are no flowery subjects here. The lyrics on this record are a lot less cryptic than they’ve been in the past. They’re far more direct. I felt it was time for me to write like that. Some of these subjects required that approach, and these songs tell stories.”

Not only did the band tread new territory lyrically on Asylum but also musically. Their first instrumental track “Remnants” ignites the album intensely. Donegan divulges, “We’ve never done a pure instrumental piece before. Our plan was to start the album that way and build anticipation with something fresh. The vibe sets everything up perfectly.”

Then there’s “The Infection,” which will no doubt be a crowd favorite. From its percussive stomp to the wah-pedal solo, the song feels like it could derail, but it’s forged together by Disturbed’s focused fire. “It’s one of those tracks that makes you feel like getting in the car and going over 100 mph,” laughs Donegan. “It’s got a cool driving groove and an extended lead.”

“This is a statement for us,” says Draiman. “We’ve never strayed from our identity. Disturbed records are always going to be rhythmic and powerful. They’re always going to deal with the darker side of things. They’re always going to be records you can take with you for a little bit of inspiration. That will forever be a common theme with every one of our records.”

The frontman concludes, “We want fans to walk away from this record with strength and release. That’s exactly what Asylum’s supposed to be. Hopefully, this is an album for people to deal with the insanity of today’s times; it’s another piece of music to help get you through the chaos and madness of the world in which we live.”

Apocalyptica is a heavy metal band from Helsinki, Finland, formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso (all three of whom are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki) and drummer Mikko Sirén.
