Oresama Teacher review
Waiting for new Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun takes forever and since a friend of mine on Twitter drew fanart if it, I decided to give Oresama Teacher a try after avoiding it for so long for being... Long and being about school life, which I mentioned earlier in a review I still have to post, I preferably avoid with few exceptions. Especially as I thought the main character was this egotistical teacher himself. Like Gintama is this a huge manga in Japan that hasn't hit it completely off in the west. But I recommend giving a try. As it has been around for quite a while, 12 years (and still no anime adaptation in sight, hopefully later? Like with Mirai Nikki?) so some things are a little dated.
Story: Kurosaki Mafuyu was the Banchou of her previous school. Violent and wild she'd lead her gang of boys to battle. Beating anyone in her way she and her gang has a reputation in the whole area. One day her mother and teachers are fed up and with the mission to become more feminine she'll now start at the school Midorigaoka, a school where delinquents are sent after dropping out, or normal students attend just to get to a dorm unless their grades are bad. Unfortunately for her... The dorm is full, so she has to live in an apartment on her own... And her neighbour is not only her teacher but her childhood friend who taught her to fight in the first place! He then forces her and the delinquent next to her to become members of the new Public Morals Club.
7/10
It starts out pretty weak, but as the story goes on, the depth and jokes get better. It even dares to go into serious topics like child neglect, brain washing, amnesia, selective mutism, androphobia, and others and treating them with the respect they need. Like in typical Tsubaki-sensei fashion, there's a lot of slapstick, so if that turned you away from Nozaki-kun, then this one will too.
The story starts out pretty simple but as it continues it becomes better and better. The jokes aren't at anyone unrelated expense anymore. So seeing Tsubaki-sensei growing is a lot of fun. The timeline is quite wonky though. So Mafuyu begins the series at 16 and her teacher/childhood friend at 22 which means a 6 year difference. But in flashbacks she's about 6 while he's 16... Why am I the only one thinking about this?!
