Somebody Loves You //

Sorry for the long hiatus guys! Hill and I have been unbelievably busy. Hill has an amazing job working at Redun here in LA but it's a start up and the start up world is crazy. My company also just merged with Lucky Magazine so I am trying to keep up with the changes there. 

Needless to say it is getting harder and harder for us to get together to take pictures and keep the blog going. Instead of the normal pics we usually have there might be a lot of selfie's since we don't have anyone to take our pictures any longer. #donthate

Also as many of you can tell, I am not a writer. I have never claimed to be and it will never be my strong suit. Hillary loves it and she will probably write pages with her posts, but for the most part I will keep mine easy and simple and to the point. 

For this post, I chose the song "Somebody Loves You" by Betty Who. If you don't already know who she is, please go check her out. She is a little firecracker that is smokin' hot! Here is her brand new music vid. 

P.S. I think I might be the only person left in America that still likes music videos. UGH.

School Friends // Now, Now

I chose a new band (to me) for this post. I just recently started listening to them and so far, I am in love. Now, Now, an American Indie Rock band formed in Minnesota, has a sort of 1980’s girl band vibe that I (of course) adore. I mean c’mon, if I could have been a teen in the 80’s, my life would be complete.

Here is a remix of the track “School Friends”. 

Hill and I took these pics while wondering around downtown LA after a super crazy and hectic For Love and Lemons and Vanessa Mooney Sample sale. When I say crazy, I mean people effing camped out starting at 3 am for some lingerie and jewelry. We got there at 9, the place was completely picked over, and there were naked girls everywhere, hoarding piles of clothes, just ready to bite someone if they got too close. Not kidding! 

I managed to get some sweet Vanessa Mooney items like the rings in this post and the “Go All the Way” muscle tank. She has some amazing edgy and intricate pieces of jewelry, as well as her shoes that she collabed with Dolce Vita on. Go check her stuff out here!

Plaid is Back //

Well...technically plaid has been back in for a while, but what I mean is that Fall is coming! I can finally bust out my big boyfriend flannels and my vintage wool tartan skirt. 

Obviously, living in California means that Fall starts way later than the rest of the country but I am too freakin' excited. Any reason to wear big comfy sweaters and combat boots, is A-OKAY in my book.

Everyone loves a good DIY project!

This project was inspired by Pinterest and The Edison Nightclub in Los Angeles. All of my crazy projects start from some kind of inspiration from a random Pinterest post, that I become obsessed with. Once I get that in my head, I can't stop until I have successfully tried to make it.

I first become intrigued by the vintage light bulbs when I went to the Edison. The Edison Nightclub is a gorgeous 11,000 square foot, underground club and restaurant. It has that 1920’s speakeasy feel. The décor is a lot of reclaimed wood furniture, red velvet walls and steam punk pipes. Check out their site here >>

When I came to the realization that I could not afford the fancy vintage ceiling lights sold on Etsy and Amazon, I decided to try to make something on my own. Now, I love DIY things but I will be the first to say that I should, in no way, be handling wires or drills of any kind. With that in mind, I wanted to find the simplest way to get the effect I was looking for, while not delving in to anything too scary.

Supplies:

Ceiling hooks, power strip, 8-15 ft long construction lamps, Edison light bulbs, lamp wire cages (You can get wire cages on Amazon of Ebay).

Steps:

Remove the cone from around the construction lamp by twisting them off

Screw in Edison light bulbs

Affix the light bulb cages using the screws on the sides

Figure out the placement of where you want your lamps hanging and put one hook where the light will dangle, as well as a second hook towards the wall to hold the cord in place. I also used a third hook in the middle of the wall to hold the cord even more securely against the wall (I HATE CORDS, so this helped.)

Thread your construction lamp through the hooks and plug into wall strip

VOILA! If you are using a wall strip with an on/off switch, you can use this as your lamp switch, or the cords themselves have on/off switches where the bulbs are.

Hey, there - Hillary here! As we all know, boyfriend jeans are my favorite go-to. They are so easy, and simple - throw on a cute graphic, stacked bracelets, your favorite booties, and you are good to go. Perfect for those mornings where you've hit the snooze button one-two many times. 

So, it was only natural that I'd accept a position at a new denim company called Re/Dun. Re/Dun takes the cake for vintage denim! If you love the look and feel of vintage denim, but looking for a more contemporary fit, Re/Dun is your go-to. Each pair is found from a variety of vintage rag houses here in LA, then completely re-constructed into two timeless fits, skinny and my fav the boyfriend. 

For todays fit, I'm wearing my favorite vintage Levi's 517s, my worn again and again graphic (I mean, cmon' it says No Diggity, No Doubt - my ALL TIME favorite song), chucks, and my new go-to hat from Free People.

Queen Caveat // We are finally to a point, where the blog is up and running and we can start incorporating more of the music that we love. For me, Ali, this blog is a way to express who we really are, and to share the music that we love with everyone. With our current generation being so extremely f*cking talented, it's very difficult to weed through the millions and millions of artists, and find music that we truly love. Usually, my current obsessions, I find from friend recommendations. To get to the point, we are going to start spotlighting certain artists, with a little bit about their background and a clip of their music. Hopefully, this will shed some light, and you'll find a dope artist you LOVE! Today, we will be featuring, Queen Caveat. They are a local band from Los Angeles, California. I had the pleasure of seeing them live, for the first time months ago, while going to see another band. I also was able to see them last night at the Roxy Theatre on Sunset and the show was effing amazing! I was immediately hooked to their stage presence and how gorgeous the female lead singer is (#girlcrush). Lauren Little, the female lead singer, has this sexy, raspy voice that every girl secretly dreams of. She gives off this bad ass attitude, that is somewhat empowering. Lets just say she's the epitome of #BADbitch. "After exploding onto the LA music scene with the 2011 release of their debut EP “Emptor”, rockers QUEEN CAVEAT have been riding the nationwide buzz of their sophomore EP, “Slap on the Wrist” in 2012. Greetings from Paim Springs! We just got back from a very short but much needed vacation in the desert. We have been working ourselves to the bone and needed some sun and fun. 

We spent all day saturday floating around the pool in our bikinis with a drink at hand. The only thing missing was a hot stud to fan us down when the 105 degree weather got to us. 

We stayed at this adorable resort and spa called The Miramonte. The deal we got on Groupon was amazeeee and we were able to get the room for 4 people without breaking the bank. The hotel has several different villa buildings that make it look like a Mediterranean village. The thing that pulled us in was the large pool, complete with a bar and private cabanas. They also have a separate pool and hot tub that is blocked off for adults only (just in case you wanted to get a little frisky).

BLACK + NYLON //

Well…our blog has gotten a brand new face-lift. I mean, we do live in LA, it was bound to happen. But, seriously, welcome to our brand-new blog, Black + Nylon. As we're maturing, and progressing in our careers - we decided that a fresh new name and blog layout, was the best road to go down.

We've done all of you a favor, and posted some of our recent Rock N' Sugar (RIP) posts, just in case you need to do a little bit of catching up. But, we are so stoked to share some photos from our recent collab with hot thangs, Kate Skolas and Kelly Kaufmann. BTW - this was Kelly's first time behind the lens, and she couldn't have been better. 

This shoot best represents each of our every-day personal styles, and the mad love we have for our blogging adventures.

One of the best things about living in the City of Angels, is the endless shows that roll through. And when two of our favorite artists, are playing together at one of our favorite venues, the night can't be anything BUT amazing. 

We were lucky enough to chill in the art-deco building, now known as The El Rey Theatre, that was built in 1936. A little backstory on El Rey -- what once was a single-screen movie theatre, turned dance club, now houses some of the greatest music acts, and living in LA, YOU have to go. If you haven't yet visited this little gem, hop onto Ticketmaster NOW!

 Now onto the good stuff, the music. The lineup for the evening, was anything short of amazing. Local hip-hop artist Blackbear was the first to crash the stage, and while we were in the crowd dancing to our favorite beats, he was killing it on stage. If you aren't familiar with his work, you can check it out here: https://soundcloud.com/iamblackbear. Next up, was Mod Sun, a hip-hop artist from Minnesota, who has the one of the greatest energies we've ever experienced. Princess Pia Mia was next in line--one of the more entertaining sets, thanks to her sexy backup dancers. And, last but not least, was T Mills! A hip hop artist from Riverside (Hillary's hometown) who killlllllled it. If you're into artists who sound JUST like their albums, live, then he's your boy. We love music, and we love concert fashion. So, here's a tip! If you want to look your best, do yourself a favor, and DO NOT wear the artists merch while standing in the crowd. Save that T for the next day! You'll thank us later!

#NoChella - AKA we weren’t THAAAT lucky to prance around in a field, drunk, wearing our favorite sunnies and call it the musical festival of the year. Coachella is more the fashion/pool party weekend of the year, if we’re honest. Sure, the lineup is amaze (Lorde, drool) but really more than half of So Cal’s finest attend Coachella to get their first tan of the year, drink beer by the pool and dawn their most recent boho chic finds. We sound a little bitter, but that’s because we’re not there. 

Instead of attending one of the most talked about festivals, we went and got freaky with nature, wearing our favorite Free People X Jeffrey Campbell booties, and trusted Levi Denim shorts. We can’t complain about how our Saturday turned out - not every one can drive 10 minutes and be in pure bliss. Surrounded by nature, seconds away from the beach and in pure silence, BLISS. 

If you want to pretend that you got down in Indio, too - you can. Boho chic is not JUST for Chella, rock that shit.

Props to my girl Katie Skolas for taking such amazing pictures for me! For this look I wanted to try something a little different and edgier. I had a new pair of EFxJM cat ears and new Mac lipstick (cyber) that I was dying to put into one look. Since I generally just don't like wearing clothes...not lying....I decided to pair this with some American Apparel boyshorts and a Brandy Melville "Bitch don't kill my vibe" cropped tee.

Everyone loves boyfriend-esque clothing - it's comfortable, looks great and can easily transform an everyday look, to an insanely sexy look. This is why my Elizabeth and James button up is one of my favorite go-to pieces. I throw it on with simple skinnies and classic pumps and I am good-to-go. I'm the biggest fan of minimal effort fashion, so you will find me constantly wearing boyfriend style button-ups, jeans and hoodies.

While embarrassing to admit, yes I do love the movie Jeepers Creepers...shhh. I thought this name was appropriate in going with the theme of the shoes that I based this shoot around, creepers. I absolutely love the new fad of these shoes and the different ways to wear them. I chose to pair them with my super super skinny black high waisted pants, a vintage T, a distressed denim jacket and a studded two finger ring. Also while at the Melrose Trading Post in LA this past weekend, I found the most amazing sunglasses vendor and picked up the sunnies you see here for super cheap. A little Miley cover of Lana Del Rey to go with the look.
