A few weeks back (January 17th) saw our boy Black Ilumin surrounded by others who also get paid for looking good but this time with a theme good enough to eat. Salon Du Chocolat is a worldwide chocolate convention where, you guessed it, it's all about that delicious stuff - chocolate. Smack bang in the middle of the fashion show was Black with a smug little grin on, and rightly so.
[reflection] Sometimes life is best served simplified.
Birthdays are often a time of reflection of where you are at in life and to reinforce good vibes further.
It's good to have gratitude for those close and also those who contribute from afar. This year was a nice chance to gather up the Wisecrue members and encourage a same-page-ness amongst the group.
In the comfort of home it's also a bonus to allow those present to catch the connectivity that occurs when in a creative environment and amongst friends who come together for a common purpose. As makeshift of a studio as it is that sits in the back end of the Ilumin household, there was still plenty of love and smiles generated through this momentary coming together.
Like Black Ilumin comments: "You can write lyrics and say it out loud - but it's different when it's for a live recording. It becomes more like an inner performance, where you are your own audience. You are hearing yourself - you are watching yourself and your breathing - no one is going to assist you with the song or the delivery..." and "it's just nice to have people over to your home & have them feel good"
Yes.
So as simple as the exercise was, it was exactly that - an exercise in being together, and of being with oneself whilst doing what you enjoy most.
Sometimes simple is better.

If you aren't familiar - he's one of the greatest and most progressive hip hop producers in Korea - SIMO (one half of the underground duo that is known as Simo & Mood Shula) was responsible for tweaking this track and bringing Black Ilumin's sound to the Dubtronic camp in a rather delightful way.
Even though they were recently granted notice at the Korean Music Awards for Best Rap/Hip Hop Album of 2012 (Self titled Album) this isn't close to the type of big ups the two deserve, being easily some of the most distinctive creative hip hop creators Korea has ever spawned.

Like woah.
Dare we say it? Whilst being one of the best MV's to come out of Seoul last year, this vid is also a fat representation on how far artists in Korea have come.
Not only that but it also shows how each and every person who is pushing for something greater in this moment is in fact contributing to more possibilities for those who will join in that flow in the future. How cool is that?
Eli A (aka Elliott Ashby) has teamed up with videographer extraordinaire The Sonny Side to bang out some sexy visual goodness that includes all of the right type of grimy mood and attitude you might fancy on a chilly winters day. Plus spiked generously with familiar MC's from "the scene" and overall? Just rather sick.
Although hip hop is still a work in progress in this country...you gotta give it up for the musicians in this video (and others who have come before them) for ever being on the up and up despite the (many) challenges of what it takes to be an artist in Korea. It aint easy being the anomalies.

감히 말할 수 있을까요? 작년도에 서울에서 나온 뮤직비디오 중에서 제일 멋있는 뮤직비디오 중에 하나였다는 걸? 그리고 한국에 있는 아티스트들이 얼마나 많이 발전했다는 걸 보여준다는 걸?
그뿐만 아니라 지금 이 순간에 각자가 더 큰 목표를 위해서 달려가고 있는 것이, 후세에도 영감을 줘서 그들의 가능성을 열어주고 있다고 말할 수 있을 것 같네요. 그게 얼마나 멋진 일인가요?
Eli A(혹은 Elliott Ashby)는 비디오 제작계의 귀재 The Sonny Side와 작업을 통해서 추운 겨운 날씨에 딱 알맞은 grimy한 분위기를 아주 멋진 비주얼로 잡아냈습니다. 그리고 “힙합 씬”에서 잘 비교적 잘 알려진 MC들도 출연하죠. 멋지다는 말 밖에 없군요.
힙합은 아직 이 나라에 현재진행형이지만, 한국에서 음악인으로 겪은 어려움에도 불구하고 항상 해쳐나가는 (이 뮤직비디오에 출연하는) 음악인들에게 존경의 마음을 표현해야 하는 거 같습니다. 튀는 변종들이 인정 받기가 쉬운 일이 아니죠.

Black Ilumin - Party Electric (LIVE on U&I) SBS
Early in September of this year Black Ilumin found himself centre stage on an 'idol' show.
Idol? Well, it's not exactly what you might think the word means. In Korea there are factory-esque habitats where aspiring K-Popper's go through their version of performer etiquette school. This show is the place where host Lee Hyori exposes these idols on TV to the Korea-verse.

[video] Cut To The Chase, or Ease Into The Zone?
Black Ilumin recently opened up the doors to his pad downtown for a very brief writing session specifically for MC's which was organized by one of the local artists. It had all good intentions of being a night where some lads could kick it together and possibly be inspired by each others presence and feedback. Even though it was a bit rushed, they were given 10 minutes and a beat to write to in which the challenge was to complete a verse & then present it at the end.
One thing he did comment on (aside from the positives of making some real connections with some real people) was related to something he's picked up on his journey and that is -->
You simply can't manifest instant connectivity when it comes to creativity between people. There is a process and an almost 'warming up' that is required between artists to catch the feel of their energy, where they are coming from and how serious they truly are about their musical (or other) creations.
Kind of reminds me of going on a date or the chorus to the Dead Prez tune 'Mind Sex'
It's time for some mind sex, we ain't got to take our clothes off yet // We can burn the incense, and just chat // Relax, I got the good vibrations // Before we make love let's have a good conversation
Ok maybe not the BEST reference when talking about a bunch of male MC's and writing but the point is: Writing to music is an interaction! An intercourse of sorts! Not only with the sound itself but also with the various elements of personality, delivery, confidence, content & energy. Yeah...Good times, just might wanna take it easy next round!! Ha! :)
[비디오] 요점만바로? 혹은천천히음악에스며들기?
저, 블랙 일루민은 최근에 서울에 뮤지션들을 위한 단체 작사 세션을 제 집 공간을 빌려줬습니다. 뮤지션 몇 명이 같이 모여서 편하게 시간 보내고, 서로의 존재감으로 영감을 받고 음악에 대한 의견 교환을 적극적으로 하자는 좋은 의도로 시작했습니다. 비록 많은 것들이 서둘러서 진행됐지만 10분 이란 시간 안에 그 자리에 주어진 비트에 맞춰서 랩 가사를 쓰고 모두 앞에서 공유했습니다.
아주 멋진 사람들과 인연을 맺은 것 이외에도, 제 음악적 여정에서 얻을 깨달음을 참석자들에게 들려주었습니다.
“사람들사이에창조성에있어서처음만난자리에서바로마음과마음이맞아서연결이맺어지는건불가능해요. 과정이라는게있고, 나와만나는음악인이어떤에너지를발산하는지랑, 어떤음악을추구하는지, 그리고음악이랑예술에대해서얼마나진지한지를알기필요한 “워밍업” 시간이필요하죠.”
이런 관계에 대한 얘기는 여자랑 데이트를 할 때 떠오를 만한 생각인 것 같기도 하고, Dead Prez의 ‘Mind Sex’라는 곡에서 나오는 코러스가 생각나기도 하네요.

물론! 남자 MC 몇 명 모인 자리에 관한 가장 적절한 가사는 아니지만, 요점은 바로 음악에서 작사는 바로 사람들 사이에 상호작용이자 상호교류라는 거죠! 단순히 소리로서 음악 그 자체와의 상호작용이 아니라 사람의 성격, 음악의 전달 방식, 자신감, 내용 그리고 에너지간의 상호작용이죠. 아…. 좋은 시간들이었어요! 다음 라운드에는 좀 더 편하게 갈수도 있을 꺼 같네요 하하!
