Blueās Feathers and Wings Compendium: Standard Wing Shapes
Part 1 [Standard ]| Part 2 [Atypical] | Feather Markings | Tail Feathers
I have expanded the traditional 4 types; Highspeed, Elliptical, Low Aspect and High Aspect ratio, because they were very narrow and vague categories for the most part, adding High Energy, Thermal Soaring, Night Glider, and Passerine wings. I feel that these extra types make it easier to understand and visualize the differences and similarities between wing shapes.
Iāve renamed Low Aspect to Powered Soaring, and High Aspect to Dynamic Soaring for the purposes of the fact that names made it hard to understand purpose and were easily confusable.Ā
A lot of these wing types are also affected by tailfeather shape and size, and that will change their agility and energy expenditure as the tail also generates lift.
Disclaimer: This is in no way intended to be an academic dissertation or proposal, do not treat it as such. It is purely for art and writing references for others, to aid description and inspiration.
Iām every one in this
MAN 1 (in a high pitched, whiny voice) Look what youāve done to my peonies!
WOMAN (angrily) Theyāre marigolds!
MAN 2 God! I think sheās right! They are marigolds!
MAN 1 I may not know my flowers, but I know a (yells in her direction) bitch when I see one!
Itās back!
I looked this up because I had to know what itās from. Itās a film called The Gay Deceivers (1969), and itās about two straight men who, seeking to avoid the draft, claim to be gay, but then have to keep up the pretense when the army places them under surveillance.
The man in the red cardigan in the clip was played by Michael Greer, who was openly gay himself - unusual for the time. He actually worked closely with the director and rewrote much of the filmās dialogue to reduce the homophobia and make it more realistic. As a result itās quite progressive for its time, having a gay character, played by a gay man, living in a happy same-sex relationship, which is more than a lot of media offers us today.
Plus the clip is delightful.
I just looked it up on wikipedia and fucking
The twist is that even after the pair is caught, they are not inducted into the military. The Army investigators assigned to watch them are themselves gay and are trying to keep straight people out of the Army.

Iāve had a long standing desire to make my own pokemon card art with full scenery of every pokemon so now I have 1/800+ š . Iāll definitely make more but considering how long this took me I just stick to Gen 1 for now.
A few more good(?) boys for @muffinlance 's Book of Friends.
1. California Condor - Giraffe
Standing up to 18 ft (5.5 m) tall, these scavengers are the tall enough to peck at the the highest branches with ease. Their height also allows them to see potential food from afar.
2. Caracal - Luna Moth
This noctural feline can't fly, but it can leap 12x its height and uses its wings to control its descent. It often leaves leftover prey in treetops to eat later.
3. Hippo - Scorpion - Camel Spider
This semi-aquatic giant is known for its aggression and startling agility. It can strike with its stinger in the blink of an eye while hiding below the waterline.
Some more concepts for Zuko's (?) Book of Friends! @muffinlance
1. Lamprey - Jellyfish
As it floats aimlessly through the ocean, the thin tentales paralyze it's prey while oral arms latch on with hundreds of teeth. It can drain a gallon of blood in only 10 minutes.
2.Ā Taratula - Bat
It's wings allow it to glide through the air herding insects into it's web. Seems to enjoy dropping onto people's faces for fun.Ā
3. Longtail Widowbird - Poison Dart Frog
It's "tail feathers" are not true feathers but are thin membranes that secrete poison. They come in thousands of different patterns and bright colors to ward away predators.
I'm on vacation right now so all I can do is take pictures of concepts/rough drafts for Zuko/Li/???'s Book of Friends organized by @muffinlance
1. Gulper Eel - Crab
This deep water creature swallows its prey whole by unhinging it's massive jaw which is almost as large as its whole body. The inside of it's mouth it full of tiny pincers that tear its food into tiny pieces.
2. Fox - Centipede
These forest dwellers can grow up to 3 feet long and use their acute sense of smell to find their prey. At night they vocalize with suprisingly loud chittering screams.
3. Urchin - Snake
The urchin-snake lives in the desert and curls up into a protective ball of spikes when threatened. They wait for prey by burying themselves in the sand and strike with their beak jaw that's strong enough to crush rocks.
Zukoās Book of Friends: Horrible Pets to Protect You From the Horrible World
So hey Avatar fandom. Weāre creating a coloring book of animal friends for Zuko, and donating all profits to charity. Because Zuko needs pets, and all around the world, there are kids who need a chance just as much as our favorite disaster child. And animals that need rescuing, too.
What you can do:
Everyone:Ā
Suggest a charity. Weāre looking for reputable abuse survivor and/or animal rescue groups, preferably international but national-level organizations will also be considered. Reply to this post or send me (@muffinlance) a message/ask with your suggestions and weāll have a vote on who gets our monies.
Reblog for hype. More exposure = more artists and potential buyers = more money raised!
Artists:Ā We need 40-100 illustrations of original Avatar-themed animals. (Ex: No turtleducks or flying bison, but polar bear geese and mimic catopuses and other not-seen-in-the-show hybrids are welcome.) You are fully encouraged to submit more than one design. If we get too many, we can vote on favorites to narrow things down (or make a bigger book, thatās cool too.)
Technical Stuff: Artwork should beā¦
8.5" x 11", portrait not landscape, if including more than one type of animal per page please keep them thematically related somehow
300 DPI
Black line art in CMYK color mode, minimum 0.25 pt line weight
0.5" blank margins on all sides unless purposefully drawing to the very edge of the page, then use 0.125" bleed on all sides
Both digital and hand drawn art is welcome. If hand drawing, please clean the image before submitting so itās just the clean lines of the artwork
Legal stuff: All artwork will remain copyright to yourself, and youāre free to post it elsewhere both before and after we publish this (please do, in fact, to help build hype; weāre using the #Zukoās Book of Friends tag). Weāre only asking for the non-exclusive right to publish your work in this single book. All artists will be credited, and have room in the book for a short blurb and contact/marketing links. 100% of profits will be donated to the charity we vote on. Your compensation comes in the form of free advertising, the fuzzy feeling that your fandom obsession is helping the Real World, and the ability to wave an Actual Book in peopleās faces and go āIāM IN THIS.ā
To Sign Up: Reply here or send me (@muffinlance) a message/ask. Iāll be putting together a list of volunteers + the animals theyāre drawing (remember, you can do more than one!)Ā
Project updates will henceforth be posted as reblogs to this post, for ease of keeping-track-of-things. Coming soon: list of animal ideas, list of current artists, general publishing timeline, layout mockup discussion, votes for the charity, and all that other good practical stuff.Ā
PS: Hello, I am MuffinLance and I will be serving as your editor/coordinator/friendly-neighborhood-deadline-enforcer, nice to meet you if we havenāt and high-five if we have.
LETāS CHANGE THE WORLD WITH THE POWER OF HORRIFYING ANIMALS. AVATAR FANDOM UNITE!
very quickly rigged up a little random generator to help with inspiration, populated with lists from @titanic-ente and @captainsupernoodle and whatever else i could immediately think of!
iāve also added a section for interesting facts about those creatures and wikipedia links for lesser-known species (though i donāt have time to go through and add them all myself)
all you need to do to put more things in the generator is click on the tab markedĀ ālistā, scroll down to the bottom, then enter your animal (and a cool fact and link if you feel like it).
> find it here! <
Iāve created a master doc to post links and information in! Behold Liās List of Lists. All important project info will be added there as this progresses. Iāll reblog to this post when new things are up.
For now: the list of currently signed up artists is posted! If I missed you, do please let me know. We currently have 27 artists. More are always welcome! Remember, weāre going for 40-100 animals, so the more the merrier. <3
Iāve gotten a ton of timeline questions, soā¦
PROJECT TIMELINE!
You should be able to comment on the doc. Let me know what Iāve forgotten, what looks wonky, and whether the dates seem do-able.Ā
Iāll consider comments/changes until November 23rd. <3
PS: The artist list on Liās List of Lists is now editable. Feel free to sign yourself up or add the animal(s) youāre drawing.
There is now an Adoptable Animal List for those who wish to suggest animals, and artists looking for ideas.Ā
Animal suggesters: add your animal and the name youād like to be credited under if it gets used
Artists: add your name to theĀ āSIGN UP TO DRAWā column to claim an animal (you do NOT need to use an animal from here, feel free to keep coming up with your own! Please update yourself on the Artistās List once you know what animal(s) youāre drawing.)
Adoptable Animal List also added to Liās List of Lists for your all-info-in-one-place convenience.
Note: Please add your animal ideas to the list directly, donāt send a message or ask to me! All previous messages/asks added to the list. If I missed yours, feel free to put it on there.

Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didnāt know what heād done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.
Why canāt we have a movie about him?
He was often called āSempoā, an alternative reading of the characters of his first name, as that was easier for Westerners to pronounce.
His wife, Yukiko, was also a part of this; she is often credited with suggesting the plan. The Sugihara family was held in a Soviet POW camp for 18 months until the end of the war; within a year of returning home, Sugihara was asked to resign - officially due to downsizing, but most likely because the government disagreed with his actions.
He didnāt simply grant visas - he granted visas against direct orders, after attempting three times to receive permission from the Japanese Foreign Ministry and being turned down each time. He did not āmisreadā orders; he was in direct violation of them, with the encouragement and support of his wife.
He was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations in 1985, a year before he died in Kamakura; he and his descendants have also been granted permanent Israeli citizenship. He was also posthumously awarded the Life Saving Cross of Lithuania (1993); Commanderās Cross Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1996); and the Commanderās Cross with Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2007). Though not canonized, some Eastern Orthodox Christians recognize him as a saint.
Sugihara was born in Gifu on the first day of 1900, January 1. He achieved top marks in his schooling; his father wanted him to become a physician, but Sugihara wished to pursue learning English. He deliberately failed the exam by writing only his name and then entered Waseda, where he majored in English. He joined the Foreign Ministry after graduation and worked in the Manchurian Foreign Office in Harbin (where he learned Russian and German; he also converted to the Eastern Orthodox Church during this time). He resigned his post in protest over how the Japanese government treated the local Chinese citizens. He eventually married Yukiko Kikuchi, who would suggest and encourage his acts in Lithuania; they had four sons together. Chiune Sugihara passed away July 31, 1986, at the age of 86. Until her own passing in 2008, Yukiko continued as an ambassador of his legacy.
It is estimated that the Sugiharas saved between 6,000-10,000 Lithuanian and Polish Jewish people.
Itās a tragedy that the Sugiharas arenāt household names. They are among the greatest heroes of WWII. Is it because they were from an Axis Power? Is it because they arenāt European? I donāt know. But Iāve decided to always reblog them when they come across my dash. If I had the money, IĀ would finance a movie about them.
He told an interviewer:
You want to know about my motivation, donāt you? Well. It is the kind of sentiments anyone would have when he actually sees refugees face to face, begging with tears in their eyes. He just cannot help but sympathize with them. Among the refugees were the elderly and women. They were so desperate that they went so far as to kiss my shoes, Yes, I actually witnessed such scenes with my own eyes. Also, I felt at that time, that the Japanese government did not have any uniform opinion in Tokyo. Some Japanese military leaders were just scared because of the pressure from the Nazis; while other officials in the Home Ministry were simply ambivalent.
People in Tokyo were not united. I felt it silly to deal with them. So, I made up my mind not to wait for their reply. I knew that somebody would surely complain about me in the future. But, I myself thought this would be the right thing to do. There is nothing wrong in saving many peopleās livesā¦.The spirit of humanity, philanthropyā¦neighborly friendshipā¦with this spirit, I ventured to do what I did, confronting this most difficult situationāand because of this reason, I went ahead with redoubled courage.
He died in nearly complete obscurity in Japan. His neighbors were shocked when people from all over, including Israeli diplomatic personnel, showed up at quiet little Mr. Sugiharaās funeral.
I will forever reblog this, I wish more people would know about them!
I liked this before when it had way less information. Thank you, history-sharers.
Tucked away in a corner in L.A.ās Little Tokyo is a life-sized statue of Chiune, seated on a bench and smiling gently as he holds out a visa.Ā
The stone next to him bears a quote from the Talmud;Ā āHe who saves one life, saves the entire world.ā Ā
I had no idea it existed until a few weeks ago, but itās since become one of my favorite pieces of public art.Ā
Chiune Sugihara. Ā Original antifa.
PBS made a documentary about Chiune Sugihara in 2005. If youāre interested in him, itās definitely worth checking out. (The PBS link above even has some interactive information to go along with the film.) Ask your local library if they have a copy/can order you one from another library. You wonāt be disappointed!
