I am delusional, I know, but I am fully fully convinced that the Lasso crew (whatever they may have told Apple) have known for a very long time that it was going for more than 3 seasons and that Ted/Rebecca has always been the love story at the heart of it and will be so at the end. And that Brendan & co were lying their arses off post-S3 about how we should be interpreting it all because they wanted everyone to think it was an actual ending. Because yeah, S3 got away from them a bit. It was narratively ill-disciplined. Needed a tougher editor, more time in post to fix stuff like that unforgivable Stonehenge shot, and for Jason to be a bit less of a heartbroken Virgo. But theyâre not actually incompetent writers who stumbled into things that they never realised they were stumbling into and thereâs still a lot of really interesting, deliberate things happening in S3, including Tedâs total dissociation from the world of his own show. Mom City is so layered and such a brilliant tragedy. Midwestern manipulator Dottie Lasso is a genius invention. And I really donât believe they wrote a tragedy by accident. I donât believe they failed to give the audience any sense that there was a full life in Kansas waiting for Ted by accident. I donât think the fact that everyone in the airport - Rebecca, Ussie guy, Beard - clearly thinks this is a terrible mistake was an accident. I donât think the panic attack music cue for the last shot was an accident. I donât believe the ugly, stark, bleak, washed out lighting was the result of the same cinematographers who shot S1/2 suddenly forgetting how to do their jobs - because we saw in the Amsterdam boat sequence they absolutely know how to throw a warm fairytale gloss over a scene. So the lifeless colour grading as Ted slowly gets sucked back into the vortex of his inescapable fate to end up exactly like his father was also a choice.
Luckily for him and for us, Rebecca Welton is the sort of character who sees âinescapable fateâ and thinks âbetâ. Dorothy in the fourth book (nobody ever reads past the first book!) is straight back out of Kansas and good for her lol.
The wonky pacing of S3 canât be fixed. But I do genuinely think weâll look back at the character arcs of S3 after watching S4-6 and think that they make a great deal more sense knowing they were written more as Tedâs dark forest midpoint as opposed to a triumphant ending. Maybe Iâm way off base! But I donât buy that those months of delays at the start of S3 filming when Jason threw out the initial scripts werenât because heâd decided they were continuing past S3. I mean, I donât actually think he changed the ending in the sense that Ted/Rebecca were initially supposed to have their big happy romcom ending and that he never went back to Kansas. I think he was always going to go back to Kansas but the original ending when it was meant to be the true finale leant much more into the âright person wrong timeâ of it all and acknowledged the romantic undertone. I donât think the parallel of Rebecca in the airport to Michelle was an accident either! And I donât think any of it was meaningless or trolling (minus the opening scene of the finale, that probably needed to be cut but it does also serve a purpose going forward now itâs part of the canon). I do think what a lot of Twitter doomers forget is that the one plot element that was expressly reported as being a new addition as part of the rewrites wasâŚAmsterdam, and all that entails. Because an obstacle is needed, but I also think theyâre writing a genuine friends (unhinged soulmates)-to-lovers rather than a trite will-they-wonât-they that ends up sucking up attention from everything else worthy of discussion in the show. I think theyâll keep Ă degree of plausible deniability as to them being platonic soulmates right up to the minute they narratively make the jump.
Sorry for the stupidly long self-indulgent ramble in your inbox. Iâd put my thoughts on Reddit but they all take the creatorsâ words at face value. Obviously boat guy isnât her Tish-approved lightning strike of a happy ending. Heâs not been made a main or even heavily recurring character and weâve got three seasons to go. They donât want us to actually invest in him beyond the superficial. Maybe itâll be the S4 finale, maybe itâll be mid-S5, but the prediction Iâm most confident in is that ship will sink.
Iâm not just giving you a short answer to be flippant but youâre literally voicing everything I also think. I do believe that the guy from Amsterdam is a passing distraction at best. I think the way the episode was shot inside that boat felt almost like a dream with the warm colors and hazy feeling where everything felt almost too perfect. Also, Rebecca going for another man whoâs also unavailable in every aspect (being from another country, a pilot, divorced whoâs also co-parenting) plays a huge factor. So Iâm not at all worried. I do think we will see him again and heâll play some role in season 4 but nothing like a permanent thing in Rebeccaâs life.
I also agree if Ted and Rebecca are to be something more itâll more than likely happen in season 5. Especially after going back and seeing what they set up in season three. The finale did feel like a rewrite. It was confined that halfway through the season they did, in fact, rewrite half of the season. Which makes sense with reshoots and how long it took for that season to come out. And how bad, quite frankly, the back half the season felt.
Iâm going into the season with zero expectations. I hope to please my surprised. I am going into the mindset of being glad to see these characters again. Happy to be in a more female centric space this time around with a womenâs team at the core of this story. I missed Ted. I missed Rebecca. I hope the show goes back to them. They were always the heart of the show. I hope we see their interactions again. Similar to season one but deeper. I also think we need some of that season one magic again all things considered in the world right now. I also miss screaming about a TV show a lot.
this is a worthy read!
Mags and Wires were tortured in the Quarter Quell for a revolutionary act they had no idea of because Haymitch hid it from them to ensure their safety while trying to break the Games. And then twenty-five-years later, Effie is also being tortured in the Quarter Quell for a revolutionary act she has no idea of because Haymitch hid it from her to ensure her safety as he tries to break the Games once againâŚ.
the point of Hayffie is that the nature of their relationship was left ambiguous, and no one argues with the ambiguity of them. In movie Haymitch looks at her during Annieâs vows when she is proclaiming her love for Finnick, theyâre constantly teasing each other, and they kiss. In the books, they work so well Katniss described it as âif they were of one mindâ; Effie was the only constant friend he had in life for twenty five years, she was the only person who watched out for him (and itâs always worth mention, THAT is Effieâs past Haymitch will ever remember). Haymitch protects her and defend her from Katnissâs outbursts, he risks his life to guarantee she was not going to be dragged by the purge, even though he knew that Coin was no better than Snow and she could have taken it the wrong way. They are always together, they have a great relationship, and thatâs it.
Their relationship is ambiguous, and Suzanne Collins supported this ambiguity when, after killing every other alternative ship for Haymitch in sunrise on the reaping (Maysilee was his sister and Asterid was his best friendâs wife), she only made their emotional connection deeper and more meaningful than it was. Implying that Haymitch is still in love with Lenore Dove isnât an effective way to prove Hayffie wrong, since thatâs a lore weâve been working with since day one and Suzanne Collins know that. If she wanted to actively kill the ship, she would have managed to make it obvious like she did with the others, and..and she absolutely didnât. So that was a very good hint :)
âoh Hayffie will never be canon. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVERââŚfirst, chill out honey, youâll survive. Second, the point is precisely that they are not canon, but that they are not not-canon either, because they have twenty-five years of gap in the history and we donât know what happened during this time, so we donât know the real nature of their relationship. The ambiguity Suzanne granted us just gave us the green light to keep theorizing, because it is A FICTIONAL BOOK. those people donât exist, dear
.
Agree with everything that Anon saidâ¨
But it makes me think of something else - I saw this theory multiple times but it says that katniss didnât share her childrenâs names because it was the first time she didnât have to share something personal, itâs the first time she could have kept a piece of her life as hers, it her story she doesnât have to tell.
I think itâs the same with hayffie.
The fact that Haymitch and Effie had this instant connection, instant trust in each other even with their different upbringing and their bond was 25 years long - it probably touch Haymitch so much and meant so much to him worked his ass of to save her from execution.
This connection is so delicate, since they for sure had to walk on their tiptoes around how the Capitol and snow viewed them, a good connection between an escort and a victor could look suspiciously like an affair - they were probably rumours about them (we donât have any other mentor escort relashionship to compare but drusilla basically ignored mags and wires).
Those 25 years were probably the hardest years of his life and Effie was probably the only one he could be vulnerable to - thats so intimate. Of course he doesnât want to share it.
And Effieâs imprisonment- Haymitch probably feels hella guilty about this and there were probably some consequences that might hurt their relashionship - that is so so intimate and some of it is Effieâs story - so he probably think itâs not his to tell.
I actually really like the ambiguity with hayffie cause he tell us what is relevant to the story without going overboard - cause their relationship is strong and complex and build on shared empathy but at the same time they both being to the table their baggage and the outside baggage- this is very hard to navigate through. It makes me think that Haymitch himself didnât knew how to process it - especially in the epilogue.
Suzanne gave hayffie so much depth and I love it, she didnât have to, especially with the way she probably wanted to put Haydove on this pedestal (understandable) but imo unfortunately a teenage relashionship that was featured in the same book it ended doesnât hold to the reader as the most meaningful one when you have two characters who we know have a deeper Longer and more unexpected connection, who we know for 15+ years, but then you tell us there was never a love hate thing between them but mutual respect and instant understanding? GOD THAT HURTS IN THE BEST WAY but itâs also more impactful.
(Also the fact Haymitch remembered she wore stocking will always be funny to me đ like hello teen Haymitch we missed you since his only other teen behaviour is not wanting to work đđ)
âoh i miss the time when Snow was not motivated by his three-weeks-situationship break up to be an evil man. He only punished Katniss and Haymitch cause they remind him of Lucy Grayâ ughâŚno? That odious man threw Beeteeâs twelve years old son inside of an Arena and forced him to watch as the little boy was eaten alive. He tortured Mags and Wires until one of them loose her sanity and the other could no longer speak. He killed Johannaâs whole family right after her Games. He made Gloss watch his little sister go into the Games not once, but twice. He made sure that Palladium Barker saw Panache being murdered in the quell just a few years after his own victory. He arrested Darius and turned him into an Avox because he tried to stop Thread from over-punishing Gale, ad later let him be mangled limb by limb for a revolution he was clearly not part of⌠he used the harmed body of a unknown child, disfigured her and forced her to be Louella McCoy so she could walk into the Arena with Haymitch ⌠you know the only thing all of those people had in common? Not a genetical, sentimental or espiritual connection with his ex, but audacity!!!!!!
He punished Katniss because she had the guts to shoot an arrow at the Gamemakers when she noticed they were ignoring her, and then proceeded to honor Rue with a little funeral when she died and attempt to double suicide so she didnât have to kill Peeta like the public expected her toâ not because she knew how to sing a folk song. He punished Haymitch cause he ran with Louellaâs dead body on his arms and then let her little corpse at Snowâs feet during the parade, to publicly hold him responsible for her death (not to mention he trying and succeeding to explode the damn Arena twice) ânot cause he was madly in love with a Covey girl that was more or less connected with an not forgotten ghost⌠Snowâs motivations had always been power and reassurance of his total dominance. If Lucy Gray was a sore point for him, and Katniss and Haymitch's connection with the Covey added personal motivation to his anger, it was just an unfortunate coincidence. Pragmatically, they were no different than any other person whoâs badly punished before or after Haymitchâs whole situation.
I'm rereading Catching Fire for the first time since I read Sunrise on the Reaping, and let's just say I'm not okay. Like every interaction Katniss has with Haymitch, Wires, Effie, Beetee, and Mags holds so much more depth now. In a way, that makes me teary. Because, of course, the only people Katniss wants in her corner are the very people that Haymitch had in his during his Quarter Quell. So, of course, when he says, "Of course you do," he really means it. Those words now hold a whole new meaning. Because of course, with how alike they are, Katniss sensed in a few hours of meeting them the same thing Haymitch has known in his bones for the last 25 years. That they are safe, they can be trusted.
Entering the big 3 of Wireâs relationship thoughts with Mags, aka probably my favorite relationship to think about
We all know that Mags is a very beloved victor among the victors, but Wiress(and Haymitch)? They have a special thing. I mentioned in a post long ago that Mags was the only elder figure that Wiress could rely on during the quell, with Beetee being occupied by mentoring his kids, coming up with a plan and the potato stand he was largely unavailable(not a Beetee shade), and to Wiress, who is so fresh out of her arena having to mentor not two but FOUR kids must have been crazy, I said too that imo Wire put on a brave face to the kids, as the last thing they need is an unreliable mentor, but behind closed doors, Mags was the only one who saw how much of a toll her first time mentoring felt, especially with so much at stake. Just like the way she let Haymitch drop his guard and cry in her arms, Mags would hold Wiress too when the kids fell asleep. She would guide her to dos and donâts of mentoring, help her with the drills and the protocols, in that way, Mags also became a mentor to Wiress. Another way they connected was unfortunately through trauma. As both were tortured viciously by Snow, and Mags I think felt immense sorrow and pain at the fact that she couldnât do anything at all to protect Wiress, whether they were tortured together or separate thereâs no doubt that they were the first to see each other post torture, and I imagine it was nightmare inducing when you see such a bright girl who did everything she could to help children escape certain death and to aid the rebellion that would ensure nobody would go through what they went through get so horribly punished for it. She would certainly get better in the future, certainly smile at Mags whenever the 2 would have the time for a quick exchange in the mentorâs lounge, with both of them struggling through their words it would be a bit difficult to communicate but they do it, and they each year see Haymitch lose himself to alcohol, and it I imagine isnât easy for either of them, in a twisted turn of fate itâs another way that they bonded in, because I truly do believe they too tried to help/support the victor of the quell, only to be either pushed away or simply not having enough time in their brief interactions. Their story is very very sad and overlooked imo. When Mags would bring back home a victor she could at least be there for them through the tour/moving into the victors village, but she was not given an opportunity to truly be there for neither Haymitch nor Wiress, itâs a very difficult thing to go through I think oh Mags and Wiress my dear mentorsđđ
But as always a lighter hc is: baking buddies. HEAR ME OUTâď¸ they are the kind of baking buddies as in âI will bake and you will entertain meâ with Mags baking and Wiress infodumping about everyone and everything, Wire really loves fruit tarts(personal hc) and Mags is more of a pie person, solution? They bake humongous tarts in pie forms. They invite Haymitch too and itâs a club, because now while Mags bakes she has a full blown podcast going on.
why are we saying it is fan service because characters from the same universe hadâŚbeing in the same universe? Mags and Wires were long known Victors that Haymitch had already said were his friends, and EffieâŚyou guys think she had just magically materialized herself as Twelve Escort? A writer wrote a book explaining the origin of her own characters and now we are upset about it?
nap time
these two are completely unhinged and i love that for them
Do you even think about how Peeta didn't have a token in the 74th games? Katniss doesn't note one and she had him stripped to his boxers to clean his wounds. Haymitch notes almost everyone's tokens, Katniss notes Rues and Glimmers, but the only token Peeta has is given to him by Effie in the 75th games. His parents or brothers didn't give him anything, he had nothing to remind him of home, I feel like this isn't talked about enough.
