Violence as tenderness. "If you don't have the strength to do what needs to be done, I'll do it for you" - flint to silver after he kills the two crewmen accused of stealing rations, before he has a full breakdown in his cabin about having done it. Flint knowing what needed to be done, probably seeing that silver knew it too, and taking the choice out of his hands so he didn't need to live with it. Flint shielding silver from the consequences of that choice, both social and psychological, because he knows that he can bear them himself. it was For Him.
