Bruce had, since first meeting, found something incredibly charming about Natasha, though it wasn’t something he really knew how to say or express at any given point. He had always been drawn to strong, stubborn women, and it had been clear even then that Natasha fit that mold exactly. Not that Bruce thought about her like that, it was just…more an echo of the man he used to be.  That echo would have been down for the count, no question.  "Hmm, that would class with some of the stories I’ve heard about you,“ Bruce said and chuckled.  "I’ve patched up a few of your friends in the past.”  For a moment he had something of a laugh start to build in his throat, but the second Natasha mentioned the OR and ‘How to Save a Life’ and the laugh died against his throat and he ducked his head, just a little.  "Oh, hardly,“ he said, the smile on his face tightening.  "Real life ORs…I used to love to play Brahms.  Symphony 1, in particular.”  There was something almost fond in his voice, with that tenor of sadness below.  "Hardly as many heartwarming stories, mostly people lived or died and…honestly it felt like I had very little to do with it.“  He pursed his lips and shook his head, forcing his darker thoughts away and looking up with a wider sort of smile.

"Well, I’m sure Uncle Nick will just have to be won over by your stubborn perseverance,” Bruce said, lifting an amused eyebrow.  "How old is he turning? I can tell you once you hit 40, you should let it go.  My daughter learned fast that a big production just brings out my grumpier side.  I just want someone to leave me a cake somewhere and leave me alone to reminiscent on how my best years are now behind me.“  He smiled a little wider so she hopefully got that he was teasing.  "But things are fine.  Good.  I’m adjusting to my premature empty nest syndrome as well as I can.”

She had hit a nerve. Nat inwardly scolded herself but you wouldn't have noticed from looking at her. The key when you accidentally push someone's buttons was to push past it. Best not to rip at band-aids you have no business putting your hands on she'd always thought. "I'm sure none of them are true, the stories. Unless they paint me in a very flattering light in which case yes, that was me and I take full credit," she joked, her tone light as she gave a little nod to his explanations of life as a doctor. Nat could be so blunt sometimes that it overtook her carefully crafted charm. "A good choice," she noted, offering a smaller smile. "Well, either way, I think that what you do is incredible. Regardless of what happens, when anyone actively does something to help others it's... It's just meaningful, I guess," she drifted, trying to think of how to shift the conversation away from whatever was going on. As he mentioned getting older than 40 however she couldn't help but let out a laugh.

"Oh, don't tell me. It all goes downhill after the big 4-0? Nick has definitely brushed past that already but I've given him enough peaceful years. He's escaped my grand schemes one too many times for me to let this one go just because he's the wrong age though. I can already see the birthday cake that Steve is going to put his heart and soul into baking. I'm sure you have a few more best years in you yet," she added, rolling her eyes in contrast to the smile on her face at his teasing. "Right, of course. They grow up so fast, huh? You must be proud."

Steve smiled far too smugly at the genuine excitement in Natasha’s voice. Yeah, he was the best platonic husband ever. “Mhm.” Steve narrowed his eyes at her comment on his sartorial choices, elbowing her ribs a little in retaliation. “You know my waist is too narrow to wear a large. Maybe I should eat all your red velvet so I can fill out. Or you can come over tonight and we can binge and talk about everything I’ve missed since we last Skyped.” Bucky was coming over to watch the game at 5, but he figured that with an hour of padding between his departure time and Natasha’s arrival, everything would work out fine. …Probably.

At the mention of Nick Fury - Steve’s mouth curled a little in distaste. It was crazy that he could love Natasha so much yet hate her surrogate father with equally extreme passion. “Are you… sure he’d even want me there?”

"If your smile gets any smugger, I'm going to be forced to roundhouse kick it clean off your face. Just forewarning you because we're, y'know, the best of buddies," she said while flashing an adorable grin. Nat let out a too loud laugh, her fingers pressed against her lips to try and hold back the leftover giggles at the very sensitive subject she'd just breached. "Okay, okay. I'm sorry I brought up your abnormally narrow waist in your time of need, it probably won't happen again. First of all, don't you dare touch my red velvet, Steven and second of all, you have a deal." Nat paused for half a beat (less, even) but it was still long enough for the thought to pass through her mind. About him. She pushed past it. "It'll be fun, you can tell me about all your bakery scandals."

Nat looked thoughtful before answering him. "Want you there? Maybe not but does he expect you to be there? Absolutely. So, it's settled."

Loki was impressed with how well she handled herself. He had a lot of respect for her. "I will try, I may be Nick’s boss, but he pretends to not hear me if I suggest him to go home. He is one of my best employees.” He smiled widely. “But yes, I will dismiss him and send him here?” He laughed. "Maybe not here. Wherever the party may be.”

He did hope she enjoyed working with him and liked her passion and dedication she held for her friends. He wanted to offer a hand in any way he could. “You flatter me, I wish more people would try to get to know me. You wouldn’t believe this, but I got an entire ice coffee tossed at me. Some people just really do not like rules.” He shrugged. He gave the police a raise in pay and it made some people upset with him.

"Oh, that is so him. I think if he could, he would eat, breathe and sleep his work but luckily for me, he isn't that powerful. Although, I'm sure his ears are currently burning at that coming from you," she smiled back, ticking it off from her mental checklist. "Definitely not. We need to get him as far away from here as possible or he will definitely sneak away from the party to do more work. I'll keep you updated on my progress, Sir."

Nat didn't have a definitive read on him just yet. Of course she had her intel from Nick but there was only so much a mix of vague shade and thinly veiled compliments could get you. Either way, any personal feelings she may develop wouldn't get in the way of her work. Liking your employer was not a requirement but for the time being, she smiled once more. "Well, no one will get close enough to throw even a pillow your way with me around, I can assure you of that."

Bruce was not the type of man who usually made an acquaintance with people out in the open, or made small talk chit chat in the aisles of stores.  Hell, a lot of times he went out of his way to avoid it.  For someone who was required to have good bedside manner and speak publicly three days a week, he was not very good at the whole social thing.

So much so that one of the few people he did talk to around town only became that way because he turned too swiftly at coffee counter and happened to spill a large cafe latte down the front of her shirt.  And still, so much time later, Bruce felt a burn of embarrassment at first when he saw her, reliving it as if it was one of the worst moments in his life, when it really wasn’t.  But it only lasted a second and then he smiled a little, shaking his head.  "Doctor/patient confidentiality,“ he said and lifted a hand in surrender.  "I’m specifically trained to keep quiet about a myriad of things.  So unless you plan on putting him in harms way or strangling someone with streamers, I think your secret’s safe with me.”

"Of course not, Doctor Banner. My line of work is solely focused on keeping people safe, not harming them," well, mostly, "But let's be honest, yours is way more impressive. You have to tell me if your day-to-day has ever felt like an episode of Grey's Anatomy. I mean, did 'How To Save A Life' ever play over the tannoy or would that just be entirely inappropriate for a real life O.R?" The words tumbled out a little too easily for her liking. They were acquaintances having stumbled into each other over a large cafe latte and a long since tossed shirt but Nat would admit she was not...not glad it had happened, you know? She brushed off the feeling before lowering her voice conspiratorially.

"Well, since you've proven you're trustworthy I'll let you know. I'm planning a birthday party for my-," she hesitated for the briefest of moments. She still did even when she knew what Nick was to her, what she was to him. "My uncle, Nick. He's a big old grump about these things so I have to keep it on the downlow. Anyway, what about you? I mean, how're uh, your things going?"

Loki had meeting after meeting. Phone call after phone all. Nick’s party? It was on his list his assistant made for him. Was that today? He got up to move around the building. He heard Natasha speaking to someone about knowing a baker and killing with her pinky.

Loki laughed at the conversation and went over to her. “When is the party?" He asked interrupting her and whoever she was threatening. "I can assure you no one will die today.” He told the person she was talking to. He turned his back on the company to look her over. “Alright deadly spider. I .. is there any way I can help?” He asked. He needed to do something fun, even if it was working fun.

"Mayor Odinson," Nat nodded respectfully towards her newest client and long-time phone call topic whenever she'd check in with Nick. The latter he didn't need to know about. "Well, I'm sure the pinky thing is one of the many reasons you agreed to hire me but very well. No one will die today," she joked before smiling at his question. Nat had hoped he'd say something like that. After all, he was Nick's boss first and foremost.

"Yes, actually. I was hoping that you'd be able to force an evening off on the day of the party. You know what he's like, you'll practically have to kick him out the door but if you are the one who does the kicking, he won't be able to refuse. It's perfect," she beamed as charmingly as ever. "With that out of the way, I'd be happy to hear any of your thoughts on theme, for instance. A man of your stature, you're bound to have been to a memorable soiree or two."

“And good morning to you too.” Steve, always glad for an accidental run in with one of his favorite people in the universe, leaned in to press a gentle kiss on Nat’s cheek. He wordlessly lifted the bags from her arms, but didn’t look past the streamers because he was a gentleman like that. “Also, if you kill me then you won’t get to try the - I’m not even exaggerating right now - eleven different red velvet desserts I made in preparation for your first weekend back.”

“I couldn’t decide. Wanda made me freeze half of everything and they’re still taking up most of our fridge space.” Steve adjusted the weight of the bags in his arms, casting a curious sidelong glance at Nat. “Are you throwing a party and not inviting me?”

"Eleven different kinds?" The gasp she added was too genuine to be passed off as the usual well-meaning sarcasm. Damn Steve Rogers and his uncanny ability to know just the dessert to win your heart; the real reason they were friends she'd often joke. A grin flashed across her face at his question, holding back a telltale laugh. "Well, if I am throwing a party, your eleven different kinds of red velvet with definitely have to be there." Nat fell into step with him, nudging him with her arm before adding, "Are you wearing extra small shirts again to look beefier?"

"Anyway, of course I'm inviting you. I just don't know how happy you're going to be about being there," because of course he would be there. Nat caught his eye, unable to fight off her smile any longer. "It's for Nick's birthday."

"Okay, you caught me. Or you at least think you have given that this party themed bag could have literally anything in it," she stressed despite the fact that the tell-tale rainbow tips of party streamers were peaking out the top. Nat had to act now, start stock piling the supplies she needed in advance before Nick would even start to suspect she had something planned. She'd been sneakily fighting with him over celebrating his birthday her whole life. Smarts won. And streamers.

"Saying that, I just want to take this opportunity to remind you that if you forget what you may or may not have seen today, it'll be worth your while. I have an in with the guy who bakes literally everything around here. And if that's not doing it for ya... I also want you to know that I can kill a man with my pinky." With a pause, a teasing smile tugged onto her lips. "Or so the rumour will go."

Basics;

Name: Natalia “Nat” Romanoff Age: 34 Occupation: Bodyguard Location: Deerfield, Illinois

Biography;

Natalia Romanoff hardly remembers her birth parents. They named her 'Natalia' and that was about all the raising they did in her opinion. Her adoptive father was a cop and just a little bit of a hustler and he loved her so much. All she was ever met with from this new, small family she'd been thrown into was encouragement and support. Her godfather was another cop, 'Uncle Nick' and later, just Nick and he loved her just as much. The tragedy of her early childhood was practically long forgotten when tragedy decided it was high time to strike again. Losing her dad was devastating and if Nick hadn't stepped in to look after her (as lost and heartbroken as they both were), Nat doesn't know what she would have done.

Later, she would join the army. That's where she met James Barnes. They clicked almost instantly, an understanding between them she hadn't had, hadn't felt with anyone before. Needless to say, they both fell hard and fast for each other and it even ended in wedding bells. However when they both left the military, things started to break down. Fights and frustrations and they couldn't stop themselves from falling apart. It didn't matter if she loved him by the time they filed for divorce and Nat moved out and on. Private security was where she wound up and it gave her cause to bounce from job to job, place to place.

But she wound up back in Deerfield anyways. Of course she visited on and off before given that's where Nick was and her bestie Steve but now it looks like she might be staying a little longer than usual. There's always work to be done though, no matter where you land. She has a specific skill set and can run in high ass heels; the world is truly her oyster. Nat might not be ready and willing to deal with any of the feelings she's kept pent up as long as she can remember but she is so ready for Steve's cakes.
