This is supposed to be for Harlequin on his birthday but it took me about 5 days to get this finished, it led me to do something new with my art as a whole! But thank you for everything @nekoboydreams ! The game had impacted me ever since I came across it a month ago, I'm willing to look forward to the new content and so on with the game itself! I really love the characters so much
Celebrating Harlequin's Birthday (Harlequin x Reader)
A/N: IT'S MAY 26TH! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HARLEQUIN!!!!! If you can't tell by my blog, Harlequin genuinely means everything to me right now and is probably one of my favorite characters in any media ever (probably because I'm so uncultured lol). I was planning on drawing something, but I have no inspiration or ideas, so I thought, hmmmm… let's write something instead!, so that's exactly what I'm here to do! Apologies if this is a little shotty, I did not prepare anything but I wanted to get this done before the day was over for me. Hope you all enjoy, and another happy birthday to Harlequin!!!
You walk into the circus of horrors with a truck load of anxiety. Such awful anxiety that made you feel like there was a tiny storm cloud covering your head. Even the Ticket Taker noticed this look, which only made the cloud grow bigger. You weren't feeling this way just because you were anxious to be back for what seemed like the millionth time. It was because you were there see one person and one person alone. The Harlequin.
Yes, it was because of how intimidating and attractive he was, but also because today was a special occasion. Today was his birthday. Once you were told of this by the Pierrot, you had to do something about it. You had figured out that the circus members don't accept gifts, so you had to be a little more creative. You somehow had to convince him to visit your apartment.
You approached the green and ebony striped tent. Luckily for you, his performance was about to start. Not even five minutes after walking sitting down, the lights had went dim. There immediately stood a shadowy figure. One that stood a little more than six feet tall, with what what looked like some kind of fool's cap glowing parakeet eyes accompanying it.
Once the lights went back to its original display, the shadow was revealed to be a figure covered in a costume filled with colors of malachite and onyx colored clothes, with a tint of gold surrounding them. Its patterns were filled with the shape of hearts, just like the ones you saw on the green ticket from only the second day of meeting the members. Its face was so white that it looked like even the clouds in the sky could look a little more gray. Or perhaps, it was a mask. A mask covered in makeup that was the same color as those parakeet eyes. It was the Harlequin.
"Welcome, my precious little monsters! How lovely it is to see you all!"
His voice was as sweet as the most sugary piece of cake you've ever had. The sound of it almost felt hypnotizing, as if you could get lost in it at an instant. But that's not what the focus was. You had to focus on his show. His performance tonight was what seemed like illusions and tricks that could be considered fatal, but somehow he would still stand strong on the stage. The gasps and screams filled the audience after every trick was demonstrated.
Once the show was over, the crowd began to wander off, eager to see what attractions there may be waiting for them, except for you. You stood close to the exit, but not close enough to where it looked like you were leaving. The Harlequin immediately noticed and walked his way towards you, looking at you with that seductive look he always had. Even if that look was only towards you.
"Ah! I just knew that my most loyal fan would come to see my show~!" he teased.
A blush marked your face. "O-of course! Your shows are always so enchanting to see!"
"Oh, are you sure that it's just the performances that you're here to see~?" he chuckled.
Your face blushing even more now. The Harlequin chuckled even more than he did only a few moments ago. He always knew how to make you breathless, and he was always successful. But his gaze can't distract you right now. It was time to ask the big question, and most likely a lot of convincing.
As the Harlequin examined you more, he questioned, "Well, dear one, is something else on your mind?"
"Well-… uh… yes, actually," you quaked. You took a deep breath before saying, "Harlequin… will you come to my apartment tonight?"
The eyes on his mask goggled at your gaze. The mouth widened, showing his pointy teeth more than ever. His figure stood still, which was very rare for him. His mind pondered and pondered at how and why you asked him something so inviting. He was shocked. Something he never thought he would feel towards a human such as yourself.
"Oh, dangerous dear… what suddenly gave you the courage to ask me such a bold question?" he queried.
You stared at him in terror, wondering how to respond. You couldn't tell him it was because of his birthday, because somehow you knew he would instantly turn you down. You finally spoke in slight frustration.
"W-well… I figured since you invited me to that tent some days ago, I thought I should return the favor!"
His head tilted in curiosity. He wasn't buying it, but he decided to follow along.
"So, my touch is still haunting your mind? I didn't think that it would get to you that much~" he teased, once again.
"Oh, don't start with that now, Harlequin!" you shouted. "I just… wanted to spend a little more time with you today."
"And why can't we spend that time in here? I think now would be absolutely perfect, wouldn't you agree?" he proposed.
You stood silent for a moment, before finally insisting, "I just think that the time we spend should be more… private?"
He examined your figure, his eyes moving constantly at you, practically hypnotized. Your teeth jittered in fear. He never seemed to be this unpredictable before. You started to think, this was a bad idea, I shouldn't have even offered him this. His sudden sigh made your fear grow even bigger than before.
"Alright, fine," he growled. "I suppose I can accept your offer. Just be warned… I'll make sure that it can make us both worth our while."
"Okay. Great!" you sighed. "I'll be expecting you when the circus closes, got it?"
"Darling, no need to get so feisty now," he hissed. "But yes, I'll see you then~"
You stared at him tenderly as he walked away. Even watching him depart makes you desire him more and more. Once you both were in a fair distance, you walked out of his tent. Everything felt easy again. Somehow, some way, you didn't even need to convince him that much, and he accepted the invitation. At this point, all of the screaming and horse-playing around you didn't matter to you anymore. All you could feel was thrill, knowing that he could celebrate an occasion with you. Just you and him.
Hours had passed, and the circus had finally closed. At that point, you weren't even at the circus anymore. You were in your apartment, decorating for the occasion. Not too much decor, but just enough to be noticeable. Tiny emerald flags that spelled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" covered a part of your wall, pear and charcoal balloons were tied onto a leg of a chair, and on the counter of your kitchen laid a gift basket filled with spicy food and spices for Harlequin to consume. As much as you would have loved to bake him a cake, you knew he wasn't a person with a sweet tooth. Now all there was to do was wait.
Several minutes had passed, but Harlequin was nowhere to be found. The door to your house nor the balcony door never opened. That's when you started to ponder on where he was. Maybe a little too much. Thoughts such as, he was playing around or maybe he was caught.
Your thoughts were interrupted when the balcony door opened.
The Harlequin spoke, as he was walking into your residence.
"My apologies, dear one. Jester requested to-…"
Just like that evening, he stood in shock, with his mask now showing a small frown. He was in pure disbelief in what he was seeing. Even if it's something as small as this. Why on earth would a human celebrate his birthday? As a matter of fact, how did they even find out?
"Happy birthday, Harlequin!" you cheered. "Sorry there isn't a lot of decorations, I didn't want to go overboard."
It took him a moment for him to finally speak, with his mask turned back into that classic, cynical smile.
"Dear, what is this for? Who told you about this?" he questioned.
"Oh! Pierrot told me at the café. Of course, he was hesitant, but I convinced him to tell me~" you chuckled. "Also, I just really like to celebrate birthdays. It's the best way to show that someone survived another year, despite all of the trials and tribulations they go through."
Harlequin's smile was slightly shaking, trying for you not to notice. Unfortunately for him, you could read him like a book. You knew he needed this. He needed his birthday to be celebrated, but not from his found family. Or at least, that's what you had assumed.
"Oh yeah! I almost forgot!" you exclaimed.
You walked in and out of the kitchen, handing Harlequin the basket of spicy food.
"I know you hate sweets, so I assumed you like spicy foods instead," you said.
Harlequin looked at the basket for a moment, and then looked back up at you, with his eyes still wide. This time, however, his eyes looked at you with passion. He seemed so smitten about this one kind act you had done to him. He snapped back into reality after a few moments of staring into your eyes. You can tell me was about to laugh, but he held it back.
He giggled, "Well, my my, dear thing, it's adorable that would would do something like this for me. Besides, I don't think Jester would allow gifts from guests, so I will have to decline on your little… gift."
"Oh, I know. That's why I wanted to eat them here!" you proclaimed.
Once again, Harlequin looked at you with confusion.
"...You seriously cannot be offering me these spicy food, can you now?" he growled.
You shook your head. Harlequin stood silent for a few moments.
"Well… I suppose I couldn't resist an offer such as this," he complimented. "As long as you also have them with me. I'm sure you won't be able to handle the spice~"
"Oh, bring it on."
For the rest of the night, you both quickly ate all of the snacks in the basket. You weren't the biggest on spicy foods, so of course, your body started to become as hot as a burning blaze and your face looked like it was as red as a tomato. Harlequin silently laughed at your weakness, finding it to be the most amusing thing he's ever seen.
Once you both were done, unfortunately, Harlequin told you that he had to depart from you once again. It was and to see him go on an occasion like this, but you both knew that if any of the crew found out that the Harlequin was missing, he would be in severe trouble. As he was headed for the balcony door, he looked at you one last time for the night, with those loving eyes. It was surreal that you were able to see him like this, and it made you blush again, but this time out of adoration. Before the Harlequin closed the balcony window, he said to you, in a soft spoken tone,
"Goodnight, dear one. I appreciate the time we had tonight. Rest well now~"

Oh idk if you all can tell but I'm not going to be doing any YuMAY drawings anymore and I don't plan on writing anything either. The excessive burnout I've been getting got worse and I've been dealing with my emotions a lot recently and I don't think I can focus on it with that kind of headspace. Hopefully you all understand.
But don't worry, it's not the end of my selfship with Harlequin :3
I may be obsessed with Harlequin but I can't stop thinking about if we told Pierrot that we liked the sound of the bell jingles on his costume, he would move his head (I'm thinking side to side) so he makes sure you can hear them at any given moment. Even when it's just sitting in silence, he knows how much the sounds of bells are comforting to you.
"My birthday wish? Is to keep you safe, my dear" (Late Birthday Gift for the one and only!)
This is based off the recent question, it took me about a day and a half since I need to focus on puppy sitting from the time being, it's also my first time drawing Pierrot! I had so much fun with this and I thoroughly enjoyed the game!

So I have no doubts that Harlequin feels like a burden since he says some shit like, "Oh, it's adorable that you're worried about me~!" when he's in your apartment. Plus, Doctor has stated that he smiles to hide his emotions and doesn't value his importance to everyone else.
I know Harlequin expresses his emotions differently and might not do this, but what if we had that same struggle, and if Harlequin sees it when he's more comfortable with being open to us, he he holds our hand says something in the matters of...
"Dear one... you've always tried to be there for me. I'm not sure how or why, but I think I should return the favor, yeah?"

Also Harlequin's birthday is in exactly one week, time to get planning.
