REWRITING THE MONSTERS (HONESTLY IT'S MOSTLY GOOMI)

I made a post about how I thought the second half of M&M was lacking and decided to give some more flavor to Debbie and Dort. I also mentioned in the same post that I wasn't super interested in the monsters which was why I didn't do anything for them...

Well I finally got an idea on how to integrate them better in the plot! Spoilers for the movie below, but ya knew that already.

Just a little bit of conflict and a new set of allies by Goomi's side. I think he got what he wanted too easily...AND. I was also thinking he could've been used as a fun metaphor for Something in the film industry, considering he literally manipulates someone into doing his evil bidding without their prior knowledge. With Debbie and Dort by the minions' side, I think the film gang arrives at the conclusion that they should NOT trust Goomi sometime during filming and before Goomi's friends arrive.

They do kinda imprison him somewhere but James is too hesitant to fully unsummon him because his whole movie hinges on the monster plot, and again, what's a monster plot without a monster? This ends up becoming a mistake on his part because Goomi manages to escape, and he finds some other mindless saps willing to work with him for cheap in exchange for fame and fortune!!! I think the Bright Brothers fit the bill really well. They just need to crash these sorry filmmakers' party, and Goomi can finally set his plan into motion...!!!

I don't know exactly how this plays out, I think the brothers summon Goomi's other friends and james' crew gotta figure out how to save the day. And yes it's all filmed. Another win for independent filmmakers everywhere.

DEBBIE AND DORT REWRITE

I really liked minions and monsters :] I had my doubts at first, but I ended up giving it a chance...it was a real fun time honestly, and it had Almost everything I wanted from a minions movie (which is just giving the main minions a solid base personality/driving motivation to move the plot along instead of being pushed BY the plot. i know that's the bare minimum but. james henry and even dick are my current favorite minions by far im ngl).

Even with all that though, I thought the second half could use some work. So in typical Gene fashion I'm rewriting the B-Plot a little bit. Putting my thoughts under the cut for SPOILERS !!

So obviously the biggest change here is Debbie's whole character being overhauled. Because let's be honest she did Not have ANYTHING to do in the whole movie outside of being dort's love interest. so I was like why not make her a teensy bit more relevant...

I always thought it would've been interesting if the minions met someone who had trouble adjusting to film with sound as well, since I generally knew it was a pretty rough transition for a lot of artists back then. Plus what with all the labor rights actors and the film crew didn't have...To be honest I wasn't taking this too seriously until I watched Sunset Boulevard for the first time, and the thought occurred to me that if I ever thought of rewriting M&M, I should at the very least add another classic film homage in there...

so Debbie Desmond was born. IIRC debbie doesn't have a canonical last name (like valentina, which. ??? ok). The character I got inspired by in Sunset Boulevard is named Norma Desmond. and i meann... Desmond was practically a perfect alliterative fit for her. And I mean if Dort gets to be a homage to The Day the Earth Stood Still, Debbie should be a homage to some other movie right??

I tried to keep her general personality intact. Her main thing in the movie is that she's a suffragette which made me think she's very much passionate about equal rights, so if she's an actor...she could have been fighting for labor rights in the film industry! This was unfortunately her downfall which made her bitter and lonely...but she still has a sweetness within her, she's just grown to be jaded. Part of her arc is finally finding some good company again, and finding her strength to keep fighting for what's right even in the face of adversity. I like to think the minions and Dort do wonders for her esteem, and other actors start looking for her because of what she believes in.

And Dort's here too I guess. He doesn't change much, he just becomes an actor. I like that he's kind of the goofy counterpart to everything I just gave to Debbie I think the balance is much needed. Plus him seeing her in a good light without the gossip and scandal, seeing Debbie as Debbie instead of the fallen star is sweet.

I didn't do anything for the monsters because I. really. did not care for them much LAWL but I'll try to give a shit about them. James' movie is still a monster movie so it'd be fun if they were able to interact with Debbie and Dort a bit more...

I have a lot of hcs I use especially for my au/rewrite stuff! But the biggest ones are:

Gru and Lucy are transfem lesbians, they both decided (separately) to transition pretty recently before the movie timeline starts

Margo, Edith, and Agnes aren't blood related, found each other in the orphanage, and were determined to be adopted all together

Lucy's parents were murdered by a villain when she was young (based on a tweet by one of the writers, though its weight in canon isn't really that clear so i'm just adopting it LOL)

The gorls love arts and crafts and they bond over making stuff together

Gru's go-to "business front" when she's doing missions is baking because of the events of DM2. She becomes pretty good at it! Lucy's only decent at baking but she learns a lot from Gru :]

The minions aren't billion years-old freaklets and instead were created in a lab by some villain who ended up discarding them because they weren't competent enough

Those are the ones off the top of my head, I'll definitely share more once I get around to them !! and... thinking about the other characters.. ahahah

it used to be a hard tie between 1 and 2, DM2 was a lot more important to me personally and I LOVE lucy wilde. so much. but DM1 is generally a much more enjoyable watch for me. i think as much as lucy was super fun there's a lot of stuff holding DM2 down for me that I couldn't enjoy compared to when I was younger </3 so DM1 ranks number one for me
