Imitation Lunch - Tashaki Miyaki - Sweet Child O’ Mine (Guns N’ Roses Cover)

I was cruising around bandcamp yesterday and saw the band Tashaki Miyaki. Have to give a hat tip to thebananseat for this one, if not for him posting pictures of his tape and record purchases, I’d probably not have had the bug in my ear about Tashaki Miyaki. In fact, I’d probably incorrectly think that someone was spelling Takashi Miike’s name completely wrong, and I continually read Tashaki Miyaki incorrectly as such. Needless to say that’s very wrong, Tashaki Miyaki is basically the opposite of any Miike movie you’d see. Where Miike’s movies are wrought with violence, vulgarity and a bit of humor, Tashaki Miyaki play ethereal pop that envelopes you in warmth, beauty and kindness. It’s like an angel is whispering in your ear with the power of a thousand echoes.   

Under Cover is, if you haven’t figured it out already, an album of cover songs. I would love to post every single one of the covers for imitation lunch, but I decided I had to bite the bullet and pick just one. Tashaki Miyaki cover a number of acts spanning decades including Father John Misty, The Troggs, Sam Cooke and Roxette. They are all brilliantly done covers, in fact I’d never heard a Father John Misty (J. Tillman, why did you go through an identity crisis?) song before until this album. I like this version so much I’m scared to hear the original, so I’ll probably avoid it. Far and away though the best cover on this album is their interpretation of Guns N’ Roses Sweet Child O’ Mine. It’s by no means literal, which I love. As the song kicks in you wouldn’t even realize that it’s Sweet Child O’ Mine. They sing together like those angels I was talking about earlier. And then the fuzzed out guitar and drums enter in and you say to yourself “OH THIS IS WHAT THIS IS!” My favorite part of the song is where we’d normally hear Axl sneer “where do we go now.” Tashaki Miyaki instead hold that “GOOOOO.” It’s so bad ass. This album is great and I’ll definitely be checking the rest of their catalog out. -a
