Young Bishop Curry, after seeing a local news report about a baby who died in a hot car, resolved to make sure that never happened again.
Bishop Curry looks for ways to fix the world.
For an 11-year-old boy, he’s unusually curious about big-picture problems, his dad says — from natural disasters to civil rights. And he’s always loved to tinker.
That’s why it wasn’t a surprise when Bishop, after seeing an upsetting local news report about a 6-month-old who died when left in a hot car, resolved to make sure something like that never happened again.
… So Bishop, in his McKinney, Texas home, drew a mock-up of a device that would sense if a child is left alone in a car. The device, attached to a headrest or car seat, would then alert parents’ phones and the police — all while blowing cold air until help arrives. He calls the device “Oasis.“
“It’s like texting,” Bishop said. “But without emojis."
His dad, an engineer at Toyota also named Bishop Curry, was immediately sold on the idea: "My thought was, ‘Why isn’t this in stores now?’"
Toyota was so impressed by Bishop’s idea that it sent him and his dad to Michigan for a safety conference.
Ima reblog this again because it’s really important

I love how, a month ago, this would have only been a one-level, hyperbolic joke about how avocados are kinda expensive. Now, this is a multi-layer satirical joke with a specific cultural allusion. It takes the hyperbole of the initial joke and turns it against itself, reminding us that avocados are, in fact, NOT that expensive, in order to poke fun at a specific article that encapsulates the broader baby boomer/gen X attitude toward millennials. In many ways, this joke accomplishes almost the exact opposite effect it would have a month ago. A month ago, it could have been used to prove the point it now ridicules. A month ago, it could have served as an example of the alleged frivolity of millenials. Now, however, with a newly acquired satirical ability, it actually serves as an example of how ridiculous criticism of the millennial generation can be. Idk man. Sometimes I hate the internet. But shit like this makes me love it because it’s just straight-up fascinating.

GODDAMNIT ALL THE THEME SONGS ARE PLAYING IN MY HEAD AT ONCE.
It bothers the fuck out of me that adults try and take away creative outlets for kids, but would never think about doing that when it comes to sports.
All little kids are actors. All little kids are story tellers. All little kids are musicians. All little kids are creative, are artists.
And to see it just slowly be torn from them so they can “grow up” and settle for whatever life the adults want for them, is heartbreaking.
my mom trains teachers and one of her specialties is creativity, and when you give kids creative outlets their performance in everything else improves, including sports. when denied creativity, their grades go down, they act out more, they even have behavioral problems at home, mental illness flourishes- because creativity is a necessity for a developing brain. developing brains NEED that creative outlet.
being told exactly what to do every single day for 12 years genuinely results in different brain chemistry because it creates the same kind of fear that occurs in people like me with ptsd. over time, having others control every aspect of your life results in ptsd. we see it in prisoners and we’re seeing it in students now. our school system requires a lot of rigidity, so the only relief a child may have is music or art class and those two seemingly useless classes can make a world of difference.
in denying kids creativity, we’re literally destroying them. we’re giving them anxiety and depression at alarming rates, and setting them up to fail because we think sports are better than art and music.
Just gonna leave [this] here.
literally that’s what they want
Ship Sizes
Supercarrier: fandom flagship. Everybody and their dog ships it. The fandom is glutted with artwork and fic. You cannot escape this ship.
Dreadnought: massively popular. Nearly everybody ships it. You can, with dedication, in theory, reach the end of the AO3 archive for the ship’s tag, but it’ll take a long time.
Cruiser: pretty popular ship. Not everyone ships it, but everyone knows about it. Has a good amount of fic/art, and probably multiple ask blogs.
Frigate: just plain popular. Feels like it could use more fanworks. New people to the fandom might not know about it, but they’ll stumble across it sooner rather than later.
Gunboat: bit of a rarepair. It might have an ask blog or two. A couple big name fans ship it. Probably only takes a few weeks to get through the entire AO3 backlog, and one new fic gets added during that time.
Tugboat: rarepair. Almost never seen except as a side pairing to a more popular ship. You can usually get through everything on AO3 in a matter of days. You’ve forgotten what it is to be picky about what you read.
Rowboat: less than a dozen people ship it. You all know each other. You exist in an endless cycle of the same five people desperately producing art and fic and one person who constantly contributes headcanons.
Canoe: you are one of maybe three people who ship it, and there’s a not-insignificant chance you’ve never encountered those other two hypothetical shippers. You spend your days paddling furiously in hopes of keeping the ship afloat, dreaming of the day you upgrade to a rowboat so you can finally rest.
Submarine: Quite a few people ship it, but nobody wants to admit to shipping it. Will randomly appear and throw the other ships into confusion.
Pontoon: that random crossover ship with that one black dress character/trope/fandom everyone will ship with everything else. Has the potential to turn into a massive party until someone gets sick and everyone goes home.
Pedalo: That iconic bizarre crackship whose proponents claim they’re only into it ironically, but secretly they’re all dead serious.
Lifeboat: You’re ready to quite this friggin’ fandom except that you just love these stupid nerds and you want them kiss so bad!
