āWhereās my keys?ā He yelled out to his roommates. She glanced back to him. He was running around throwing anything he could get his hands on to find the keys. Everyone thought he was going out on some date. Maybe some sort of hookup. Where he was really going was just... out. To look at the stars. He has always wanted to and he found the right spot, and the right location, and the weather was perfect so he could wear his favourite outfit.
He had no idea who Leah was. He made her up to keep his roommates happy. They didnāt need to know he was going out alone, especially in his state. He never did anything about it of course, he would just go out for the night, stay in his car, then come home tomorrow morning, seemingly reset. The nights at āLeahāsā weāre becoming more frequent. He didnāt know how long he had kept the lie going.
But his cover was blown.
āHey, everything okay?ā His one roomate asked him. He sat him down.
āYeah, gonna go see Leah. Might not be home for a few days.ā He told him. She came into the doorway of the living room. The two shared a glance that he definitely noticed. āAm I not allowed to have fun?ā His voice became slightly nervous.
āWe know Leah isnāt real.ā There was silence, then, āwe followed you one night. The night after you yelled at us. We were concerned for you so we followed you... and we saw you parked in a field.ā He didnāt know what to say. She sat beside the two of them. āIf somethingās wrong, you can tell us.ā
āI donāt know.ā
āWeāre here for you.ā
āNo I donāt know whatās wrong. I donāt know whatās wrong with me. Why I canāt feel happy or why I canāt find the joy in the things I used to or why I canāt be happy with new things. I donāt know how I feel.ā He snapped at them, he didnāt mean to. āI just feel so slightly off all the time. Like something Isnāt Right. Everyday it feels like just Something... Isnāt.... good? Right? Fine? I canāt help you understand because I canāt understand myself, okay?ā
There was silence. He continued.
āI need to know whatās wrong with me and I need time to be alone but when Iām inside I canāt be alone because thereās always someone here and even when there isnāt it just doesnāt feel like the right time to decompress. I barely sleep anymore, I canāt eat right, I feel constantly dehydrated, I just...ā he started to get overwhelmed. He got up and screamed out, then punched a wall. He was still for a moment before calling to his knees, his hand grasping to the open part of the wall. She walked to him and glanced to him.
āDo you promise to stay safe tonight?ā
āYes.ā
āI have your keys in my room, let me go get them.ā She stood up. He did too, turning back to him.
āI know you can feel happy again one day.ā He told him. He just ran his injured hand through his hair.
āAt this point Iād strive for stable.ā Shs came back into the room and handed him his keys. A hug from both of them and he was off, making sure to lock the door behind him.
