last night we went into nyc to see a show at a tiny black box theater with andy robinson playing a bereaved patriarch. it was an incredibly intimate and heart wrenching experience and sadly i didn't take the chance to really speak with him or get a picture, out of what was likely an abundance of caution and respect for his time and his peace. if you get a chance to see Sukkot I highly recommend it. i really hope to get a chance at a do-over when the atmosphere is a little less heavy, because i can tell he's interpersonally delightful under normal circumstances. i think the whole room was sobbing by the end of the Q&A, BUT we did enjoy a brief moment of levity when one of Andy's old soap opera costars spoke up from the audience and they had a bit of banter.
thank god for @lorenzobane making sure to get cast autographs, and it was also such a lovely surprise to meet @timetravellr14 in the wild who is apparently a fan of my work š„ŗ

The thing with Julian being so pushy with the flirting and borderline obsessive about women and yet so damn awkward around them, in the first season, that is so annoying my friend is..
Compare how he is with Garak. Genuinely interested. Genuinely engaged. Relaxed. Confident. In charge almost. Flirty in a good way!
And then given what we learn about Julian much much later
I think this season 1 Julian is a man - a young man - who doesnāt really know what he wants or what he is but knows heās got to try to behave normal. And somehow heās learned thatās āflirt with womenā and heās internalised it and is trying so hard - too hard. And itās not working because at no point does he actually want to be behaving like this. Not really. Heās behaving the way he thinks heās expected to behave. Heās trying to force himself into a box other people have built for him. And heās trying to persuade himself heās happy in that box. But heās not real. That not him. And heās very young still and awkward and so bad at social interactionsā¦
Luckily he found himself on DS9, which has been pointed out, is a very queer place. He almost immediately met Garak and I think a lot of his journey on DS9 is one of self-acceptance and self-discovery
The problem is showing S1 Julian to someone who doesnāt know anything and trying to explain āyes, I love this character but youāre just going to have to wait to find out whyā
Garashir really is just that good. Its about healing your trauma by loving your mirror. Its about intermingling your soul with another man so extricably that your every act is performed in his gentle shadow. Its about taking the red spring of fate and dancing with it, planets in a decaying orbit and falling into each other's gravity in the kind silence of space. Its about the scifi queer allegory. Its about love overcoming shame and learning to be your own person, not in one grand gesture but in a series of soft, quiet moments. Its about sids big puppy dog eyes. Its about being a dork with your crush at lunch. Its about fucking that old man.
The Beat caught up with Alexander Siddig of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for a conversation on Arab-American Heritage Month.
SIDDIG: A lot of gay men at that time, and maybe even gay women, kinda responded to the Bashir character. I think that was because of (Garashir), and maybe the bravery of not only that, but also an implicitly Muslim character being potentially gay, potentially bi, potentially gay if theyād explored that route. That is something Garak brought with him to the party, a bottle of implied homosexualityā¦
LLOYD [interviewer]: So were you aware in the 90s that it was homoerotically charged and on board with that?
SIDDIG: I was aware of it in the back of my mind, yes, absolutely, and encouraged it. At my first meeting with Garak I became visibly flustered. That was entirely my choice. It wasnāt written into the script. So I set off in that direction right from the get-go. And Andy (Andrew Robinson) obviously loved it, and that character became a series-long character because of that first sceneā¦
LLOYD: Thatās really cool. Weāve heard a lot of times about how Andy and Garak were on board from the start but I donāt know that Iāve heard before that you were on board from the start.
SIDDIG: I subconsciously keep that door open with just about every character that I play, and I always keep it as ambiguous as possible. One of my first roles was in A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia with Ralph Fiennes and I played Feisal and again, not in the script, but that was charged with homoerotica and implied homosexuality. Iād just come fresh off that project. And Iāve done it numerous times since, characters that are written straight I just make sure are not quite straight. Thatās just one of my things, probably because Iām not quite straight myself and thatās probably perfect.
