I feel like the reason Jax doesn’t work as a “cautionary tale” for me is because of what abstraction is meant to symbolize. Defined by Gooseworx herself, abstraction is suicide. When you have Jax’s fate of abstracting be defined as what happens when you refuse to change until it’s too late and/or become a better person for a cautionary tale, it just doesn’t feel right? Especially in a show where its main theme is not having someone feel unloved or unwanted and discussing mental health?

Like why is suicide the most fitting fate for this character, because as we know now, abstraction isn’t just “losing your sanity” or “losing who you are”? It’s killing yourself. A cautionary tale works when the consequence is an actual consequence. When bad people are punished for what they did to others, that’s satisfactory because it’s inevitable for them. It’s a consequence given to them by either by their environment or by/for the people they harmed. Jax early in the series was already a perfect cautionary tale without having to be killed off in the end. Due to Jax’s toxic behaviors and unhealthy philosophy of “nothing mattering”, so many consequences were in her tracks. No one trusted her, even when she intentionally wasn’t doing anything at the moment. No one liked being around her due to fear or valid resentment. Any friend she did have was long gone without them literally being dead (as shown with Ragatha in episode 4 where she admits she hates her). Hell, Episode 4 resembled Jax as a cautionary tale of what kind of life you’ll have when you hurt others. Everyone distrusts you, fears or hates you, and when the day is done, you’re just a depressed and lonely person who decides to hurt others instead of maturing and making better decisions. And maybe just maybe, similar to the protagonist, being kind-hearted and open could lead you to having a happier life!

But when you realize later on that every problem in the circus for Jax is self-inflicted and it just ends with her killing herself, it doesn’t feel like a cautionary tale anymore because Jax’s battle was always there. It wasn’t the environment she was in or the death of a friend that worsened her behaviors. It wasn’t inevitable. Because every issue Jax has had over the years was created by her and the circus members (even if they were abused or dislike Jax’s behaviors), still see potential good, nothing feels cautionary about the person Jax is anymore. Hell, the finale is spent on Pomni trying to save and explore Jax. This character is obviously not too far gone if the main protagonist can still be by their side after EVERYTHING.

Everyone was kind and supportive towards Jax at her time at the circus. Even at her worst, they still sympathized with her and wanted to help. It even gets to the point where some characters (like Pomni and Ribbit unfortunately), feel like they’re coddling Jax. Everything Jax decided to do was up to well…Jax. So, no, Jax creating all their own issues and ending it at the end doesn’t scream, “This is what happens when you refuse to develop as a person” or “This is what happens when you refuse help” because nothing was beyond herself and Jax doesn’t face actual consequences or accountability from her victims as a punishment. It’s just suicide, which should never be deemed as a punishment of any kind. I don’t think fucking suicide should be inevitable fate of a cautionary tale. Because suicide is not atonement or punishment. It’s fatal self-harm that no one in the circus deserved.

This somehow ended up on my dash and I have zero interest in engaging with OP directly, but I'm genuinely baffled by what insulated bubble you have to exist in to reach this conclusion.

Look, maybe I'm the problem here. Maybe I don't witness whatever you're talking about because I'm the issue. That's entirely possible. My experience comes from supporting my mutuals, friends, and loved ones of color who have directly shared their experiences and perspective with Gooseworx's microaggressions and harmful behavior.

Every single person I've known who had legitimate issues with Gooseworx and her representation of Jax is either Black, queer, trans, or a person of color. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of white people who are critical of Gooseworx are doing so in support of their Black and POC loved ones who have pointed out the microaggressions and poor representation through characters like Jax.

So when you tell people that disliking Gooseworx and Jax for valid reasons or in solidarity with Black and POC loved ones is pan handling to a conspiracy of desiring "palatable to straight cis white variety trans people”" what I hear is that the only voices and focus that matter are specifically the white demographic of anti Gooseworx people while ignoring the people of color who are actually leading this criticism.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Much of Gooseworx's fanbase is white, yet somehow people criticizing her are being labeled in less harsh words than I’ll us now “alt-right , cishet or cishet coded trans white supremacists who are transmisognists"? The logic fails completely when you consider who's actually bringing these criticisms forward and who they're standing in solidarity with.

The people I support aren't white supremacists or white at all, where I get my sources of the information isnt from anyone anyone white, let alone cis hetero or trans white oeople, they're people of color calling out racism. Maybe we should listen to them instead of dismissing their concerns as some white-coded conspiracy?!

Gooseworx behavior and choices of action impact groups that are far more important in minority status than cis het white people, holy shit. Did you forget she made “special exceptions” to befriend a legal minor of whom which she founded an a completely inappropriate age gap friendship by said minor drawing porn and kink art of her characters? Did we forget the photo on her website for her merchandise featuring a black woman surrounded by a bunch of Jax plushies with police batons? Ironically enough if Goose is saying Jax represents her and she has already made racist jokes and micro aggressions like wtf does this say about her? Jax is predatory in the series and she’s saying she would end up like Jax had she not transitioned yet has a history of being weird with a minor who she’s still friends with as an adult over porn fanart???!

It’s right there in BIG BOLD PRINT. She is not disliked for being a trans woman by black trans and queer people, Gooseworx status as a trans woman does not negate her micro aggressions, steps of grooming, inappropriate conduct with minors, disrespect to the trans community or the black community.

I know black minors who run blogs to speak against the support of Gooseworx and I watch every single day as grown ass adults and white people come to talk up, over, down to and silence these kids.

Gooseworx may be trans which yes makes her a minority and yes I do not doubt has experience with transphobia or transmisogyny coming her way even without her previous offenses which is sad- if Gooseworx hadn’t done all the things she did, refused to apologize and put a minor in a very inappropriate position I’d be all on the side of her defense. That’s not what happened and she needs to be accountable for the choices she has made.

One little end note— accusing people of being in support of white washing representations of trans women is hilarious when Gooseworx herself is a WHITE TRANS WOMAN?! Do you hear yourselves? Oh. Hell. No. Anyone notice how much they downplay Gangle and Ragatha as characters too? Gangle is deemed as “someone who annoys you while they’re unmasking” rather than an abused aspiring artist struggling with a manic episode in a time where she wants to unmask and find her own happiness, while feeling and being treated as a nuisance in the process. She’s on a power trip in a familiar environment and is trying so hard to reclaim power over herself, something she has lost due to her own depression and dehumanization from Jax. Ragatha is deemed as simply “a rich white woman” instead of an abuse survivor who was abused by her mother who feels socially isolated and is masking her own negative feelings for the sake of others. She is someone who fawns as a trauma response. Similar to Gangle, she often feels like a punching bag and believes no one loves her, repressing both her childhood trauma, self-loathing, and grief over her dead/lost friends. Alongside this, she is also being abused by Jax too, someone who was an EX-FRIEND of hers. Her race and social class has nothing to fucking do with her character. She never exemplifies classist or racist tendencies at all. They’re twisting a kind and empathetic abuse survivor into, “Oh she’s white and rich. She has no problems, so it’s a difficult test to empathize with her hehe”.

And yeah, Jax is just boiled down to a transfem edgelord who feels unworthy of love rather than discussing the darker and abusive traits of the character too…is definitely not an intentional choice.

With the way they talk about Gangle and Ragatha (who are also Jax’s biggest targets/victims btw), THEY failed the empathy test.
