she   glanced   at   the   seat   next   to   him.   and   flipped   the   coin,   catching   it   with   a   swipe   of   her   hand   and   placing   it   on   the   top   of   her   hand.   heads.     ‟    thank   you.   i   won't   be   much   of   a   bother.    „     another   flip.   heads.   she   could   sit   down.   she   moved,   pulling   out   the   chair   and   sitting.   with   the   akademiya's   assignments,   it   was   an   expectation,   and   a   mandatory   one   at   that,   to   complete   them.   she   didn't   need   permission   for   that.   she   opened   her   book   and   began   to   read   for   the   upcoming   class.   she   knew   they   are   both   in   different   darshan,   yet   rarely   anyone   was   as   quiet   as   him.   wishing   to   ask   a   question,   she   flipped   the   coin.   tails.   suzume's   lashes   brushed   downward.   furrowing   her   brows,   she   flipped   again.   tails.   again.   tails.   one   more   time.   heads.

𝐈𝐓  𝐖𝐀𝐒  𝐒𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐈𝐍  𝐉𝐀𝐏𝐀𝐍—𝐒𝐔𝐙𝐔𝐌𝐄'𝐒  𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃  𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄  𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐎𝐍.     cherry  blossoms  are  her  favorite  flower,  and  for  a  week.  and  it  was  beautiful,  seeing  splashes  of  pink  in  the  branches  of  trees  lining  the  streets,  and  petals  floating  through  the  wind.  during  this  time  of  the  year,  she  liked  keeping  the  curtains  open  just  so  she  could  see  them  from  their  apartment  in  tokyo.  she  stood  there,  peering  down  as  the  branches  swayed  below,  accompanied  by  the  chirps  played  at  cross  signs  to  signal  people  to  make  their  way  towards  the  other  side  of  the  street,  and  the  occasional  rhythmic  knock  of  a  train  going  over  the  train  tracks  above.

“   アルハイサム、夕食にハンバーグステーキを食べませんか？それとも私に作ってほしかったのですか？   ”    she  switches  between  english  and  japanese  with  her  fiancé,  wanting  to  help  him  practice  as  much  as  possible,  ever  since  he  moved  with  her  to  japan.  though,  she  let  out  a  yelp—“   うわ！   ”—when  she  felt  him  grab  her  by  her  hips,  and  the  sudden  downward  movement  was  blurred  until  her  eyes  caught  up  to  see  that  she  was  on  his  lap.

that  made  her  laugh,  his  lips  pressing  against  her  cheeks  as  he  repeated  his  declaration  of  love.  she  tried  to  gently  push  his  face  away.     “   okay,  okay!   ”     she  giggled,     “   i  love  you,  too,  i  get  it!   ”     and  when  he  finally  relented,  she  turned  her  head  towards  him,  smiling.     “   what  was  that  for?  i  was  asking  what  you  want  to  do  for  dinner.  but  i  feel  like  we've  been  cooking  for  a  few  weeks,  and  maybe  it's  time  that  we  go  out  and  eat.  what  do  you  think  about  denny's  in  shibuya?   ”     denny's  in  japan  was  a  comfort  food  for  her.  unlike  in  the  states,  it  was  a  designed  to  be  a  family  restaurant,  that  families  frequented.     “   i  think  you  might  like  it.  and  then  afterward,  we  could  walk  around  shibuya.  have  you  been  there  before,  ダーリン?   ”

Listening to Suzume talk and the way she reacted, memories of a certain brunette came into his mind. The way she'd apologize for little things or things that didn't need apologies at all. If anything, it made him chuckle how similar they were. And the way they both wanted things to be fixed. Biting down on his bottom lip, he only listened to the words that Suzume said and began to reflect on his own. 

He could kiss her again, this time with enough passion to forget her name, but he didn't want to lead her on. Besides, he was still processing that she had come back from the dead. Maybe a new lease on life made her feel bold and empowered, and he didn't blame her for it. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. And it wasn't that Louie wasn't attracted to her. She was beautiful and smart, something that always attracted him to women who didn't deserve the pain and misery that he had to offer. The baggage that weighed down on him like a boulder, as if he was walking uphill, and there was no area to take breaks. 

Suzume was hurt once, beyond emotional and mental. She died. Louie was a former hitman. He took lives for a living, at least that was what he used to do. And now? He was a hacker for hire, never asked why, and didn't care as long as he got money. In a way, there was blood on his hands. Why would he pass that off to Suzume after everything she's dealt with? She didn't deserve that. She was too pure, too good. There was a reason why he left Washington and put an entire ocean between himself and 𝐑𝐎𝐒𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐄 𝐀𝐓𝐋𝐀𝐒. Louie had learned to love, and he had recognized that he loved her enough to let her go. 

❝ I don't give a damn about your experience. ❞ Louie replied simply and bluntly. Then he checked himself. ❝ The kiss wasn't bad, just unexpected. I haven't been kissed like that in a long time. ❞ Louie admitted softly before running his hand through his jet black hair. When Suzume made the offer about getting hot pot, he released another chuckle before finally making eye contact with her. Deep brown eyes looking into cerulean ones, how they shined like the northland lights. How can anyone ever hurt you? A thought Louie had before he reached out to cup her cheek and stroke her cheek with his thumb. 

She was waiting for an answer, and he needed to give one. But instead, he'd show her. Leaning over, he placed a soft, gentle, and almost chaste kiss against her lips. ❝ Sure thing, Sunshine. You got a deal. ❞

𝑺𝑯𝑬  𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑹𝑬𝑫  𝑨𝑻  𝑯𝑰𝑴,  𝑼𝑵𝑨𝑩𝑳𝑬  𝑻𝑶  𝑪𝑶𝑴𝑷𝑹𝑬𝑯𝑬𝑵𝑫  𝑾𝑯𝒀  𝑯𝑬  𝑳𝑨𝑼𝑮𝑯𝑬𝑫.    it  made  her  flinch  slightly,  reminding  her  of  how    𝐋𝐔𝐂𝐀𝐒  𝐃𝐎𝐌𝐀     treated  her,  mostly  as  a  means  of    𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡.    as  if  she  was  something  to  toy  with,  to  poke  and  prod  just  so  he  feels  better  about  himself.  she  sat  there,  eyes  looking  around  for  a  moment  at  the  interior  of  louie's  bmw,  spiraling  from  what  he  could  have  found  so  funny.

as  she  sat  there,  processing—or  lack  thereof—she  realized  that  maybe  she  kissed  him  not  out  of  spontaneous  impulse.  it  was  more  so  because  he  was  taking  care  of  her  in  a  way  that  no  one  had  since  she  left    𝐀𝐉𝐀𝐗  𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐊𝐎𝐕.    sure,  she  felt  like  he  provided  for  her  in  ways  she  tried  to  insist  that  he  didn't  have  to,  but  she  realized  it  was  his  love  language:  acts  of  service  was  a  way  that  he  showed  love.  it  was  by  paying  for  her  food,  lending  her  his  coat,  walking  her  home  from  the  station  even  if  his  stop  was  in  the  opposite  direction.

louie  demonstrated  the  same  kind  of  love  that  ajax  gave  her.  and  she  missed  ajax  more  than  she  would  like  to  admit.  however,  it  wasn't  pride  that  was  stopping  her.  suzume  thought  that  ajax  deserved  so  much  better  than  what  she  could  offer.  surely,  he  wouldn't  want  someone  who  was     𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐊𝐄𝐍    beyond  repair,  would  he?

she  raised  a  brow  at  his  blunt,  curt  response.  turning,  she  watched  as  he  brushed  his  hand  over  his  hair.  that  was…  completely  unexpected.  it  made  her  laugh  a  little.  she  worried  over  something  so  small.  it  was  all    𝐈𝐍  𝐇𝐄𝐑  𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃.

the  kiss  had  rendered  her  speechless,  yet  it  also  brought  a  smile  to  her  face.     “   good,   ”     she  murmured,  tucking  her  bangs  behind  her  ear,  the  bits  of  hair  that  had  fallen  out  of  her  bun.     “   i'm  glad  it  didn't  absolutely  suck.   ”     reluctantly  pulling  away,  she  replied,     “   i'll  see  you  in  a  bit,  then?   ”

𝑨𝑵  𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑹  𝑳𝑨𝑻𝑬𝑹,     she  stood  in  the  rain,  a  clear  umbrella  held  over  her  head.  she  could  have  waited  inside  the  lobby,  but  she  didn't  really  want  to  make  louie  wait  for  her  to  come  out.  seeing  his  car  pull  up,  she  hurried,  opening  the  door,  sliding  into  the  passenger  seat,  closing  her  umbrella,  and  then  the  door.  the  interview  felt  like  a  battle  within  itself;  the  work  culture  within  the  country  is  often  times  exploitative  in  nature,  taking  advantage  of  the  salarymen  and  women.  furthermore,  traditions  make  them  feel  indebted  to  attend  meals  after  work,  typically  involving  drinks,  and  it  would  be  rude  to  leave  early.

this  company  she  interviewed  for  was  no  different.  sure,  it  gave  her  a  means  of  starting  over,  the  option  to  stand  on  her  own  two  feet  without  the  help  of     𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐍  𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐓,    but  now  she  was  doubting  whether  or  not  it  was  a  good  idea.  was  the  distance  she  was  trying  to  put  between  her  and  ajax  justify  the  hurdles  she  will  have  to  learn  to  navigate?

suzume  turned  and  weakly  smiled  at  louie.  the  clothes  she  wore,  and  ironed  this  morning,  were  drenched  with  the  tokyo  rain.     “   sorry.  i  hope  i  didn't  have  you  waiting  for  me  too  long.  what  did  you  do  while  i  was  gone?  and  before  you  ask,  i  don't  really  want  to  talk  about  the  interview.  but  i  may  just  take  the  job.  i  do  know  a  good  hot  pot  restaurant  nearby,  and  they  serve  wagyu  beef.  it's  a  little  expensive,  but  i  could  pay,  don't  worry.   ”     she  didn't  want  him  to  know,  but  she  has  been  living  out  of  her  savings  that  she  built  up  while  working  for  mr.  hunt  in  the  states.  he  didn't  need  to  know  that;  he  was  already  doing  so  much  for  her.

𝐈𝐓  𝐖𝐀𝐒  𝐏𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆  𝐈𝐍  𝐓𝐎𝐊𝐘𝐎.    louie  was  kind  enough  to  offer  a  ride.  still,  knowing  how  expensive  it  was  to  own  a  car─considering  the  parking  fees  and  how  ultimately  the  cost  outweighed  the  luxury  a  car  provides  in  tokyo,  giving  the  option  to  completely  bypass  rush  hour  on  the  subway  lines─suzume  often  wondered  how  louie  got  the  money  to  afford  a  car.

for  the  majority  of  the  ride,  she  stayed  quiet,  listening  to  the  music.  louie's  taste  in  music  was  vastly  distinct  from  her  own.  the  song  was  a  bit…  melancholic.  and  when  louie  agreed  to  the  lyrics,  suzume  turned  to  look  at  him,  frowning.  she  then  looked  out  the  window,  towards  the  building  she  needed  to  be  at.  she  had  an  interview  for  a  job  that  would  pay  her  bills  and  more.  for  now,  she  stopped  working  for    𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐍  𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐓,    seeking  work  that  would  possibly  move  her  away  from  the  same  circles    𝐀𝐉𝐀𝐗  𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐊𝐎𝐕    ran  in.  her  fingers  tightened  slightly  around  her  purse,  remembering  how  she  told  ajax  about  her  choice  to  prioritize  her  family's  needs  over  her  own.  they  didn't  know  she  died.  they  didn't  even  know  where  she  has  been  for  the  past  year.  and  how  could  she  tell  them?  how  could  she  explain  that    𝐘𝐀𝐄  𝐌𝐈𝐊𝐎     brought  her  back  from  the  dead,  after  her  ex  husband  left  her  for  dead?

she  felt  so  sorry  for  ajax.  he  was  begging  her  to  stay.  that  was  the  second  time  he  told  her  he  loved  her,  the  first  being  in  hokkaido.  she  felt  like  he  was  truly  in  his  element,  not  even  bothering  to  take  his  coat  out  one  morning  while  they  walked  to  the  convenience  store  from  his  property,  since  he  gave  the  coat  to  her.  suzume  remembered  how  he  looked─bits  of  snow  on  his  hair,  breath  visible  from  the  condensation,  lacing  his  bare  fingers  with  her  glove.  he  gave  her  a  smile  that  met  his  eyes  and  told  her  the  cold  was  no  big  deal  to  him,  and  to  consider  the  coat  a  favor  she  didn't  have  to  pay  back  because  he  loves  her.

immediately,  without  much  consideration,  she  turned,  cupping  his  cheek  and  pressing  her  lips  against  his.  she  didn't  quite  know  why  she  did  it.  there  was  no  motive  at  the  moment.  the  kiss  wasn't  rough;  it  was  soft,  delicate,  hesitant.  filled  with  fear  that  he  would  not  reciprocate.  and  when  he  pulled  away,  she  felt  her  heart  drop.  was  it  something  she  did?  did  he  regret  kissing  her  back?
