*** Spy x Family Ch 139.1 Review ***

A user here (lavenderblizzard) made a crazy theory today that is crazy enough to turn this plot around completely.

In Ch 139.1 we find out that Donovan, and another important figure, are visiting former Prime Minister Chapman in the hospital who appears to be dying. Chapman is the one who “started the war” so his condition has not been made public and he isn’t allowed visitors (because he’s blamed for the war).

Now, at face value, we might think that Donovan is kinder than he looks. Or we might wonder where the connection is. But the theory that this user suggested goes like this:

We know that Donovan was a completely different person in the past according to his wife, Melinda, and then he suddenly changed. He changed so much that Melinda now calls him “an alien”. But what if, in fact, the man who possessed the body of Donovan Desmond was, in fact, not Donovan Desmond?

What if it was actually former Prime Minster Chapman???

This is where it suddenly would all make sense. Anya is about to read Donovan’s mind, but what if the mind she finds, that is Donovan’s, isn’t located in Donovan’s body? Something only a mind reader could know? What if she realizes his mind is trapped in a different body? Chapman’s body.

So, what if the man who we believe to be Chapman, isn’t Chapman, but Donovan trapped in a coma-like-state, unable to free himself because of whatever these men did to him?

This would also explain the scars along the side of Donovan’s head. We don’t know when they got there, but they are evidence of something surgical. Say, a brain transplant.

That would also mean that Melinda, and her two sons have been living with a freaking sociopath this entire time, which would explain their odd behavior.

Also, how fitting would it be to have the Forger’s, all traumatized by the war, who only want peace, to discover this secret? That the man who started the war, is trying to start another one?

We are told that “Chapman” is probably dreaming. So I imagine Anya, who is all set to mind read, is going to read whatever the true Donovan is dreaming of.

I’m guessing the next chapter or the one after that will explain how this possible brain transplant happened.

Chapter 139: Go Anya, Go!

Chapter 139 is...electrifying! (I'm sorry. Forgive the pun.)

Unbeknownst to Loid, Anya has decided to take on the mission he can't. And--just a minute, Loid--we know you're Westalis's best spy...but please surrender to those nurses and rest! Sometimes surrender is a good thing, my man. Then again, if I knew (unlike Loid) my kid was in the midst of a precarious situation, I'd be climbing the walls to protect my kid too. (Where's Yor?!)

Fiona is trying her darndest to track down Donovan on the Neurology floor, but two guards are in her way. I'm not sure if "Mr. Mitchell" is code for their VIP patient, yet Desmond and Dr. Surjay's reason for visiting the hospital was revealed. They are there to visit Prime Mister Chipmunk--er, former Prime Minister Chapman. (Not sure how you fumbled that, honey) After gaining some information from the nurses, Fiona finally decides to shoot a listening device from a third floor window, foreshadowing Anya's own listening in. Of course, Anya is still on the chase.

Edit: I’m not sure if the second guy is Dr. Surjay or not…but for now let’s assume he is.

Before we dig into that, the conversation between Desmond and Dr. Surjay brings up so many questions. Like we saw in chapter 91, this chapter confirmed that Chapman was the prime minister during the start of the East-West war. But now he lies in bed frail and comatose, a tracheotomy in his throat, apparently on his deathbed. Dr. Surjay and Desmond share some words about Chapman, barely seeming to conceal their dislike of him. It seems the guilt and weight of things that happened during his time in office still hang over him and are viewed unfavorably. "I certainly do owe him a great debt," Desmond says. Did he help get Desmond into office? Did the war work in Desmond's favor? Who knows.

Desmond gazes down on Chapman with an inscrutable expression, and says "I wonder what he's thinking now." Which sparks another electrifying question. Can Donovan read minds? Maybe he can't read the minds of comatose people. Perhaps he can read intentions or look into thoughts, like a language half-understood. Can he see visions? My wager is he does have a power, and this chapter doesn't deny it, and seems to imply it.

Dr. Surjay, the former director is coldly pragmatic. "Medically speaking, probably nothing at all...dreaming that he's in hell or something. What a pitiful man." What happened? Water under the bridge, skeletons in the closet. Skeletons creepier than Donovan Desmond's eyes? It's not hard to believe that Dr. Surjay could've had a hand in Project Apple, or dark experiments for some greed or political gain Perhaps Chapman witnessed grim things indeed.

This would be a grim chapter indeed without the antics of our intrepid rascal, Anya! She decides to switch clothing with a girl (how cute) and tries to get past the guard. If I were him, I'd be wondering what's with that kid too. Anya tries, but the guard sticks to "None Shall Pass." And he's pretty good at playing catch. Maybe Loid should give Anya some acting lessons. She's got imagination and spunk, but you sound a little wooden! Still, you've got to admire her scrappiness.

Finally, Anya decides to use her super-power and scampers to the 5th floor, just above the room where the final "boss" is. Anya can't find him through the mass of voices. Then Anya has an epiphany...who is man most like Sy-on Boy, the man most like the one Damian thinks of? And Anya knows Damian's inner world. She focuses...and ZING!

Anya locks in. (Snap, crackle, pop!)

The intensity rises. Anya's nose starts to bleed. What is she sensing? A vision in Chapman's mind? Detecting Donovan? A rise in her powers? Her hair "horns" crackle with energy. Are they antennae? I'm not sure about that theory but perhaps they put microchips in her head? A stretch, sure, but microchips were invented in the late 1950s and did exist in the late 1960s...and there Endo Sensei leaves us.

We're electrified to know what happens next. (Boy he loves his cliffhangers!)

It's possible we might get a glimpse of Anya's backstory...or more legitimate confirmation of Donovan's powers. Some answers to the darkness behind the East-West war--something I'm curious about!

All the same, Anya's in a vulnerable place. Hurry, Mama Yor! Zip zap!

Obviously, the electricity firing from Anya's head is supposed to be visual metaphor. That said, could you imagine we get to the next chapter and Donovan looks like this:

as much as I'm into that prime-minister-brain-swap theory just for fun, it would be a nice twist if Anya heard the real!Donovan's thoughts without realizing the swap

I like the idea of Anya recognizing people's "vibes." I hope that's used more in the future, and not just for mind reading, but also as a form of comfort for her. Like the next time Anya is overwhelmed in a crowd, she's able to focus herself when she feels a loved one nearby.

Lowkey feeling maternal towards this girl who got to wear Anya's uniform.

Like she's probably seen eden students wearing their uniforms thinking she'd never get to wear one, since she's probably pretty sick to be in hospital like this. Not to mention even normal kids won't ever get to have that experience. and she just got to wear one on a whim, she looks so excited ♥️

Imagine you're a prime minister whose health is gradually failing, but you're given the opportunity to keep on living by brain transplant. And even retain your authority by choosing the next minister as your body. So you're basically immortal now and gain the chance to "finish" things from last war by starting a new one.

This chapter was really satisfying with it's subtle hints from the conversation with Donovan D and also how Twilight was dragged back made me giggle

Dude rest in your room and let your daughter blow that plot bomb

But her nosebleed is concerning..if you remember she's getting nosebleeds whenever her power is overstrained WELL NOW THE OVERSTRAIN IS COLOSSAL even though she's been training herself to handle this thought overstimulation, would she be able to do this now?

Maybe next chapter(s) we'll finally get another look at her backstory but at what cost..
