For me the gracerocky appeal is about how suffocatingly intimate everything about them is. Like, the level of vulnerability and trust they have to have with each other after taking the time to literally study each other inside and out. At that point something like sex is so far from feeling like a huge leap to make. They're each other's entire universe during those years on the Hail Mary, of course they would both be interested in what makes the other feel pleasure (and deriving pleasure from it themselves). Who cares about the barrier between them, they want to melt into each other's bodies and live there. They're practically a single organism by the time they reach Erid due to the forced proximity (although I doubt either of them would ever think of it as "forced").

For Grace specifically, I like to think that sex was always something he had issues with on Earth because he hated the vulnerability, and maybe also the expectations that came with it of having to do things the "right" way, having to ensure the other person feels fulfilled while never being sure how into it he actually is himself. With Rocky, it would be completely different, because Rocky has no existing expectations for what human sex is supposed to be, nor can he participate in some of the acts Grace might have had hang ups about to begin with. Rocky just wants Grace to show him what feels best for him. And Grace doesn't have to worry about not knowing how to be enough for Rocky because Rocky will tell him without judgment. They're both learning here. They're both trusting each other and nothing is going to fall apart if someone gets something wrong.

Sorry for the rant I never get this way about my favorite characters either idk what they put into gracerocky to make it like this. It's hot as hell though

“Ugh, look, there’s that garbage drone again…” your neighbour sneered, turning away as the robot made its way down the street, collecting the rubbish and tossing it into a larger collection bin which it tugged along behind it. “I wish they’d do it earlier so we didn’t have to run into them. They’re so creepy…”

Honestly, you thought it was pretty cool. The robot looked up at you as it passed, the neon lines along its strange, slender body flashing softly in the colour of the company that owned it.

“Thank you,” you said as it grabbed up your refuse with a clawed hand and lobbed it into the bin with the rest of the bags.

At the sound of your voice, it paused, something flickering in the cameras on its face which allowed it to ‘see’. “Repeat?”

“Thank you,” you said again.

“Unit is simply performing its function…” it shrugged.

“I can still thank you though…”

Something clicked and whirred, and you wondered if it was alright. It carried on without any further reaction.

Next week, you made sure you were around to thank it, watching its reactions more closely, and the week after that too…

One week, it twitched softly as it approached. It fumbled a bag and dropped it.

The next week, there was a different robot collecting refuse, and it wouldn’t respond to you or acknowledge you at all…

It bothered you. It wasn’t like a robotic unit being replaced was new. Robots malfunctioned and were replaced. Yet you couldn’t quite shake the feeling that it had been replaced because of you.

You looked up the company online and searched their policy on their units. It was pretty straight forward, a guarantee of reliable service. Was that why the unit had been retracted? Because it had faltered? Maybe they’d let you buy it since it had been retired. You didn’t have a lot of money in your budget, but you could scrape some up for it.

You called the company. “Hello?” “How can we help you?” the cheerful robotic secretary asked.

“I was wondering if you sold retired units.”

“I was wondering if you sold retired units.” The secretary made a series of noises before responding.

“Let me transfer you to the assets clerk. They will be with you shortly.” The voice informed you, a soft classical piece playing in the interlude. Not long afterwards a click sounded over the line.

“Ah, ‘ello there! Do you mind repeating the question?” A much more human-like voice prompted you. You reflexively swallowed, a tempting to clear your throat.

“I was just wondering if you sold retired units? The one that uses to patrol my area was replaced recently…” You reiterated to the asset clerk. The male voice hummed before responding.

“Well it’s either sell ‘em or scrap ‘em for parts. Is there a specific unit that you wanted?” You felt your heart twinge strangely in your chest. A bit of hope cluttered your mind as you nodded quickly before realising that no one can see you from over the phone.

“Uh, yes! I wanted the unit that patrolled Sector 8’s extra district? I think the identification number was H48R14N?” You blurted. A small intake of breath came up of your speaker.

“Are you sure?” The asset clerk questioned you, double checking your decision. Your heart twinges again. Of course you were sure.

“Yeah, I’m sure. Tell me h—the price and I’ll pay it. That’s the one I want.” You said confidently, leaving no room for doubt. The asset clerk didn’t sound so sure himself.

“Ohh-kay,” typing sounds filtered over the line, “Turns out that unit is just forty credits? Huh. Seems pretty faulty. But if you’re sure?” The man checked again. You almost groaned in frustration, but kept the appearance of politeness.

“Definitely, 100% sure.” You reaffirmed.

“Alrighty then, just give me your name and address, and you can pay when the unit arrives at your house.” The asset clerk told you. You quickly rattled off the information, confirming it completely with the clerk. The man let loose a sigh.

“Alright. You’re all set. Good luck,” The asset clerk said in a clear dismissal. You took a deep breath.

“Thanks.” You ended the call.

It was three days later when the delivery truck pulled up at your place. You watched nervously as they unloaded the unit and brought it up to your door. “Here you go.” You quickly handed over the units and opened it up.

“That’s, that’s not…” It wasn’t your robot. It had the right unit number, but the colors weren’t quite right. And it was a little too shiny.

“There a problem miss?”

“This isn’t the unit I wanted.”

“Unit H48R14N?” the delivery person checked.

“Yes, that’s right, but-”

“This is the correct unit. Have a good day.” The delivery person turned and walked away.

You knew it wasn’t the right unit. You stepped forward, examining the plate. You brushed over it lightly. There. You could just make out an older number beneath. H48B14N.

This wasn’t the unit you wanted, but perhaps… You turned the unit on and called it to follow you. It did so, walking into the house just before you closed the door. You turned around, facing the unit in your living room.

“Did you know H48R14N?” You asked them bluntly. The unit made a humming noise, voice somewhat hesitant.

“I… am H48R14N.” The unit sounded…young. A little afraid, even. A bit of worry welled up within you. Still, you kept interrogating the little bot. Ugh. That made you feel terrible.

“Did you know the original H48R14N?” You asked again, rewording the question slightly. Th unit seemed to relax once you changed your approach, a soft shhhh coming from them as their pistons moved.

“Yes.”

“Storage facility B12.”

You grinned triumphantly. “Thank you!” The robot unit looked at you blankly.

“This unit responds to inquiries.”

It didn’t understand. But that was okay, the original H48R14N hadn’t understood why you thanked it either. You beamed at it. “I know. But thank you.”

You carefully looked up the storage facility on a map, and called the people there.

“How may I help you?” a robotic voice inquiried.

“Hi, do you allow visitors to your storage facility? I’m looking to purchase some parts.”

“We allow visitors between the hours of nine am and five pm,” the robotic voice replied.

“Thank you.”

“Thank you for calling the company with your inquiries.”

You packed up carefully. “Come on, let’s go get the original.” The unit followed you out to the car and settled in the back.

“I’m not trading you out, just so you know. They tried to jip for one, and you’ve kinda grown on me.” You told the unit, something within you settling as their anxiety toned down. It wasn’t long until you reached the facility. After informing the gate security of your intentions, they let you in with little fuss. Something told you that not many people came here. You parked the your car before turning back to the unit.

“You should probably stay here and hide. I don’t want you to be nabbed by some rando, okay?” The unit made a soft whirling noise, eye lights flashing a soft orange.

“H48B14N. Please?” You pleaded, eyeing the unit imploring. A chuff of air escaping their exhaust and they sunk back down.

“Unit agrees.” Despite the almost sullen tone, you took it as a win and proceeded to cover H48B14N with one of blankets you usually kept on the car. Then you moved some things around to make their shape a little more unnoticeable. You breathed deeply, looking back at the covered unit.

“I’ll be back. Promise.”

The storage unit was full of boxes of scrap metal, robotic arms and legs, voice boxes, you name it. The further you walk into the unit, the more your heart sinks; maybe your robot had been dismantled for parts already. What were you going to do if you found them in a box?

Just as you’re about to give up hope your heart jumps into your throat when you hear something hiss from a dark corner. Relief washes over you as you shine your flashlight on the spot, seeing your H48B14N sitting defeatedly on the ground. A slow drip down the wall had already begun to rust their shoulder and your chest aches over how distraught they looked.

“H48B14N?” You startle as their head snaps up to look at you, lights flashing in surprise. There’s a moment of silence as the two of you stare at each other, like they were trying to process who you were. Your heart leaps when a bright yellow exclamation mark shows up on the screen.

“It’s you!” The bot scrambles to their feet, joints creaking and groaning with protest as they sends spare metal parts flying in their wake. “You came for me!” They grip your arms excitedly before suddenly seeming to realize what was actually happening. “You came for me?”

“Of course I did!” You blurt, clearing your throat to stop the tears that threatened to spill down your cheeks. It was suddenly obvious why H48B14N had been replaced; any robot wildly developing off their programing was useless to the company. “I couldn’t just let you rot here. Come one, let’s find someone so I can pay for you… act natural okay?”

A green exclamation mark crosses their screen before going completely blank, save for the normal lights one expected to see on this model unit. You smile to yourself as they follow you out, happy to have your robot back.

You found the five credit price atrocious - your friend was worth much more than that - but you certainly weren’t going to raise it. Heading back to the car, you see your other bot peeking through the window from under the blanket, the top of a blue question mark present on what you could see of their screen.

“I found it,” you informed it cheerfully. You opened the car and let the unit enter inside. You smiled at them again. “I’ll just buy some things to help clean you up, okay?”

“Thank you.” You smiled. It was nice to hear the very words that had started this come from it. You started the car and headed back.

The rust was hard to clean off, and you knew that you were going to have to replace some of the metal eventually. Whatever had happened to it while they were in the storage facility had put more wear on it than you had expected. But that didn’t matter. It was here with you now. Both of them.

“Okay, now that is just ridiculous,” you laughed at the screen.

“Agreed,” H48R14N - Rian - stated. It watched the show, lights flickering with its mood.

“I have procured more refreshments,” H48B14N, Brian, proclaimed proudly.

“Thank you.” You accepted the popcorn as Brian settled beside you and leaned into your friend. This, you thought, was all worth it.

A narrative parallel I love: Whumpee seeing themselves in other objects/animals/etc that Caretaker interacts with.

-Caretaker gently carrying a spider or other creepy crawly out into the garden instead of squashing it gives the Whumpee who was always considered expendable a lump in their throat.

-Caretaker having a “scary” dog breed like a Pitt bull or Rottweiler but treating it like a pet and lapdog, loving on it instead of training it to attack. Living Weapon Whumpee watches hopefully from their spot standing guard as the dog lays its head in Caretakers lap.

-Caretaker fixing their old beater of a car instead of getting a new one, even though they could afford it, and the Whumpee who was replaced after get hurt/making a mistake/getting too old/etc feels a sense of overwhelming relief.

-Caretaker feeding and watching over a feral stray cat from a distance, never trying to trap it or get too close, just making sure it’s okay. Stoic/defiant Whumpee not letting themselves think about how that makes them feel. Also, if/when Caretaker has to catch and treat the stray because it’s gotten injured or sick, realizing that that’s what Caretaker had been doing for them. They just were too scared to understand.

-Caretaker oiling and polishing their tools, putting them away carefully, taking pains that they were well taken care of and would last forever. Mentioning offhandedly that if you take care of your tools, they’ll take care of you. Slave Whumpee nodding emphatically, hoping that mindset extends to them as well.

-Caretaker tending their garden, trimming buds from flowering plants to keep the plant healthy instead just pretty, and Whumpee who’s only ever been valued for their appearance feels less shame and guilt for “letting themselves go” in recovery.
