My favorite aspect of Kiri and Spider's relationship is how in-tune and aware of each other they are.
Like when Kiri immediately picks up on Spider's feelings about Quaritch in Way of Water and doesn't hesitate to not only confirm, but affirm that he isn't his father and isn't responsible for what his father's done.
Or at the end of Fire and Ash when Kiri starts seizing.
Kiri starts seizing three times between Way of Water and Ash and Fire. The first two times, the reactions of the people around her are to disconnect her from Eywa.
But Spider- who's only had his kuru for like a week- instinctively connects with her.
His first instinct is not to sever her connection, it's to stabilize it. To find a way to ground her, to be present for her. It's something that he doesn't even think about, he just does it. Because he knows that Kiri needs him with her
We always get an I See You moment between the other characters. But for Kiri and Spider, I think they've always naturally Seen each other to the point where it never even has to be said
Don't talk to me, I'm busy daydreaming about my OCs being tortured in a illegal lab‼️Come back later ‼️
Warning: AFAA spoilers ahead.
I have this headcanon that Kiri would be the one to suggest doing Tsaheylu with Spider for the first time — and please don’t misunderstand me. I don’t imagine it in the same context or meaning as Jake and Neytiri’s bond. Yes, canon has made it very clear that Kiri and Spider have romantic feelings for each other, but I don’t think romance would be the reason they’d be willing to share that bond. I think it goes much deeper than that.
They’re both deeply spiritual and deeply faithful in their own ways. Kiri doesn’t even need explaining. And in Spider’s case, this has been shown repeatedly: his respect for Pandora and its living beings, and most clearly in the moment when Jake is about to kill him and Spider says that he knows he has to go to Eywa — firmly believing that even though he’s never been able to connect to her, she would still receive him among her own.
For the Na’vi, Tsaheylu is something profoundly spiritual, special — I’d even dare to say sacred. And that’s exactly how I think they would see it.
The thing Spider has wanted most in his entire life is to be Na’vi. He has explicitly said that he wishes he could connect to Pandora through a kuru, to have one, to experience a bond he believed he would never have. And now he finally can — all because of Kiri and what is essentially a miracle.
In several scenes, and especially in the one where they’re talking, we’re shown Kiri’s desire to be the one who introduces Spider to Pandora in a completely different way than he’s ever known. Now that he can breathe Pandora’s air and has developed a kuru, she wants to be his guide — not just physically, but spiritually. And I think her reasons go far beyond “it will freak out the ancestors.” There’s a deep joy in her every time she sees Spider connect with Pandora in a way he never thought possible. You can see it on her face: she’s genuinely happy because he’s finally receiving everything he’s longed for his entire life.
But Tsaheylu isn’t the same as bonding with an ilu, and Kiri knows that. Better than Spider does. Because it’s very likely she’s already experienced Tsaheylu before — at the very least with her parents, considering what we see with Ronal connecting to her daughter before dying. So Kiri understands what it truly means, and she understands what Spider has been missing due to biological barriers — something that’s completely natural to the Na’vi from the day they’re born.
And the closest, healthiest bond Spider has is with Kiri. So it makes perfect sense to me that she would offer herself. That they might want to keep such an important moment just for themselves. Just like when Kiri asked Spider to wait until she could connect to Eywa too, because she didn’t want him to experience that without her. And even though Spider was incredibly excited to finally have everything he’d ever wanted, he chose to wait. He always keeps his promises. I think something very similar would happen with Tsaheylu.
Which is why it feels so unbearably painful that Varang took that from them.
Spider’s first Tsaheylu being with Varang — used as a tool to mentally torture him — must have been horrific. Abusive and disgusting. And we can see how deeply it affects Kiri by the way she breaks down in tears. The fact that Kiri understands the full weight of what’s happening also makes it feel like poetic justice when she later uses that same bond against Varang. Because Varang isn’t just torturing Spider in the most invasive way possible; she isn’t just mocking Eywa — she’s corrupting his first bond, turning what should have been sacred into a potentially traumatic event.
Still, once things calm down after the final battle… once Spider has had time to adjust to his new life, I can imagine Kiri coming back to this idea. Beyond all the reasons above, as a way of undoing some of the damage. Of replacing a terrible memory with something gentle and meaningful. Of covering the bad with something they could both carry in their hearts.
Now, would Spider accept?
I’m not sure — not anymore. Before, I think the answer would have been an immediate yes, with the same childlike excitement we’ve seen with so many other things. But now, he might hesitate. And I don’t think that hesitation would be because of Varang. Spider is one of the mentally strongest characters I’ve seen. But his experience with her showed him just how deep — how invasive — that bond can truly be.
He doesn’t distrust Kiri. But he’s always trying to protect her, and the last thing he would ever want is to hurt her. So it feels likely that the secret of Jake trying to kill him would be something Spider would take to the grave. To spare Kiri the worry. To protect her relationship with her father. And the possibility that she could learn that truth through Tsaheylu might be enough to plant doubt in his mind…
I genuinely love how James Cameron shows the trust and closeness between Kiri and Spider through so many small, almost easy-to-miss details.
One that I absolutely love — and that I barely see anyone talking about — is how natural it is for them to touch each other’s kuru.
We know that a Na’vi’s kuru is incredibly important. It’s their way of connecting to Eywa, to each other, and essentially to all of Pandora. It’s also deeply personal, because it’s basically spiritual and mental access to another being. That’s why what Varang does is so invasive on every possible level, and why those scenes are meant to make the audience uncomfortable. You don’t see Na’vi casually holding or touching someone else’s kuru for no reason. It’s rare. When it does happen, it’s usually in meaningful bonds — a mother and child, mates — or in moments where someone’s life is being threatened. Grabbing someone by the kuru isn’t just physical intimidation; it’s a very clear, intimate threat.
And that’s exactly why the way Kiri and Spider interact feels so fascinating to me.
In their first scene, Spider takes Kiri’s kuru in the most casual way imaginable. There’s no hesitation, no second thought — he just does it, like it’s something he’s done a thousand times before. He steps into her personal space (which, honestly, barely exists between them) and holds it right in front of him. And Kiri doesn’t care. She lets him. She only pulls away because she’s frustrated with herself and her inability to connect with Eywa — not because Spider crossed a line. Her irritation is directed inward, not at him.
This is reinforced later, when the roles reverse. Kiri is the one who invades Spider’s space, takes his kuru, and starts to idly play with it while they talk. Again, it’s distracted, natural, innocent. Neither of them treats it as something unusual or significant. And I find that beautiful — because it shows how much trust and closeness exists between them on so many levels, without a single word being said.
Which also makes it so much more horrifying when Varang tortures Spider… and Kiri has to witness it.

Spider your giving them flashback's
I’m back with another lengthy ATWOW post, this time discussing Spider and Kiri!
Their budding relationship has captivated me so I thought I would list all the ways that the film sets them up to become a likely romantic pair in the sequels.
Before we begin, I want to point out that Spider and Kiri are not related through adoption in canon. That being said, I still respect anyone who is of that opinion.
Okay, here goes…
Evidence from ATWOW that a romance is likely developing between Spider and Kiri, and the reason why this is an inspired choice by James Cameron.
— First up, in every scene they share, Kiri and Spider exchange some form of physical contact. This ranges from casual, playful, and protective touches, to holding hands, to reassuring hugs. While most of these gestures are not exclusively romance-coded, they happen repeatedly, reinforcing the physically intimate bond between Kiri and Spider. Far more intimate than most. Here are a few examples among many:
she helps paint his body with blue stripes
he teasingly grabs her tail, which is a direct parallel to Jake and Neytiri flirting in the first film
she pulls him into a comforting hug in the science lab
this one makes me laugh—even the Recoms hold them captive as a pair, which is hilarious to me because there are like twelve Recoms to four kids, but for some reason they can only spare one for Kiri and Spider 😂
they stick close together throughout the Titanic scene, helping each other climb and holding onto one another
and the big one—Kiri places her hand over his heart after the final battle and Spider holds it there
— Kiri and Spider also have palpable chemistry. They share some very meaningful glances and sweet smiles. These moments are all protracted, which means that the camera lingers on them for longer than usual for maximum impact. They are also very playful with each other in the lighter moments of the film, which is basically the definition of flirting.
— They care for and defend one another to a profound degree. Kiri comforts Spider with reassuring words and physical touch (mirrored by the other romantic couple in the film, Lo’ak and Tsireya), while Spider rages against any threat to Kiri.
— Kiri calls Spider ‘Monkey Boy’. No one else calls him this. It is a term of endearment—her pet name for him. This differs from Tuktirey being called ‘Tuk’, which is just a nickname.
— A key moment in the film that develops their relationship is when Spider finds Kiri in the forest and wakes her up from her trance. This is an important scene for her character as it introduces the audience to her connection to Eywa and the environment of Pandora. Spider is the one who shares this scene with her. Speaking of meaningful glances and sweet smiles…this scene continues to establish their familiarity with each other.
— Another way the film sets up a future romance is by having their current relationship acknowledged by other characters. Jake, who was once human, knows that Kiri is very fond of Spider, who is human. He recognizes that she is depressed because they have been separated and she is missing him. It’s even likely that Jake has considered the possibility of there being feelings between the two of them, because he was once in that situation himself with Neytiri.
— A James Cameron callback: Spider and Kiri having their own Jack and Rose moment aboard the sinking RDA ship. They are paired up for the scene and have to fight to stay afloat. The stakes are extremely high, and they put all their effort into staying together. The angst was real 😭
Some reflective observations:
— Spider is intrinsically Na’vi in his beliefs and behavior, while Kiri has noticeable human features and heritage. These traits differentiate them from their own kind but allow them to fit very well together.
— They are a perfect example of the classic “society doesn’t approve of them together” trope. Similar to Jake and Neytiri in the first film, but even more so because Spider doesn’t have an avatar…yet. He is fully human. Not to mention the fact that Neytiri would absolutely not approve of Kiri wanting to be with Quaritch’s son. The potential for romantic drama is off the charts!
— And last but not least, the very existence of their relationship is poetic. Their parents hated each other and were on opposite sides of the war for Pandora. In spite of this, Kiri and Spider grew up together and are devoted to each other. It almost feels like fate intervened. A perfect scenario for a love story.
So, what makes all of this actual evidence of a romance developing between Kiri and Spider? The fact that cinema is a visual mode of storytelling. Everything on screen is put there intentionally and serves a purpose to the story. In this light, all of Spider and Kiri’s scenes were consciously written and directed by James Cameron, carefully performed by Sigourney Weaver and Jack Champion, and meticulously rendered by the VFX artists. They are not random, accidental moments. Time was spent planning and executing their dynamic in this film, which strongly hints at future romantic development. I went to see ATWOW with my sister. She is only a casual moviegoer, so I was impressed when the first thing she said about Spider after we saw the film was that he clearly liked Kiri. They may be subtle, but all the signs are there!
Also, I want to point out that unlikely/forbidden romances are immensely popular with audiences. James Cameron is very savvy to introduce the possibility of another one into the Avatar franchise after Jake and Neytiri in the first film. Unlike Lo’ak and Tsireya’s teen romance, which progresses swiftly and appears to be smooth sailing, Spider and Kiri are set up to mirror Jake and Neytiri with a romance that is far more complex and will take time and pain to blossom.
And I am very much looking forward to it!

I need a fan fiction from Kiri's POV (or Kiri AND Lo'ak's POV) in which she discovers Jake considered killing Spider (and how he was about to.
It becomes a quiet, almost affectionate running joke that everyone knows Spider and Kiri are together...everyone except Jake and Neytiri.
After the RDA–Mangkwan alliance is finally shattered, something in Spider and Kiri shifts. The danger has faded, the world has calmed, and an uneasy peace remains. Spider and Kiri grow cuddlier, snugglier, more inseparable than before. At first, no one thinks much of it. Those two have always been close, best friends since childhood, bonded by shared experiences, differences, and similarities.
And yet, something has changed.
It’s Kiri kissing Spider’s cheek more often than necessary, soft, lingering touches pressed just below his eye or at the corner of his mouth, uncaring if someone is watching. It’s Spider reaching for her hand without thinking, fingers lacing with hers as he gently tugs her away for long, quiet walks along the shoreline at night, walking side by side under the starry sky, holding hands. It’s the way Kiri reapplies the painted stripes on Spider’s skin with intimate care, her fingers tracing his face slowly, lovingly, as though memorizing him anew every time.
It’s Spider rushing through his chores with uncharacteristic urgency, not to escape work, but to scour the beaches for the most beautiful seashells he can find. Pale pinks, deep blues, iridescent spirals...anything that reminds him of her. He presents them awkwardly, bashfully, palms open like precious offerings. And Kiri treasures them. She weaves them into her hair, lets them sparkle in the light when she moves, wears them proudly around her neck, her wrists, her ankles.
It’s Kiri allowing Spider to braid her hair, something she rarely lets anyone do. She lays her head on his lap, tail flicking lazily as his clever fingers work through her hair with careful concentration. It’s Kiri pulling him close in quiet moments under the sun, Spider’s arms wrapping around her waist, his head cradled against her chest while she hums softly, fingers stroking through his dreads in slow, soothing motions that make his eyes flutter shut, and his breathing slow as his heartbeat syncs with hers.
It’s the way they look at each other, unguarded, warm, achingly gentle.
Slowly, inevitably, the truth becomes obvious.
The truth becomes obvious to everyone from the Metkayina to the scientists, Lo’ak, Tuk, Tsireya, every single soul in their orbit.
Everyone sees it.
Everyone understands it.
Everyone except Jake and Neytiri, who remain utterly, almost impressively oblivious, assuming that Kiri and Spider are merely best friends and nothing more.
I am going to start violently sobbing 😭
This is so beautiful. Please tell me you have an ao3 account because I need your writing injected into my veins
I believe this though. I feel like Jake and Neytiri would know but for the sake of their sanities they would just pretend as hard as they can that it isn't real. For their sale and the kids sake because Eywa knows no one is ready for that conversation
you don't know why but you're dying to try 🎵
