“I can come to you. If you wish,” Cole whispered into the dark. 

Her head shot up, craned at a strange angle to see him. “Oh! Cole…No. I didn’t.” 

“Back at Skyhold, you and your Josie have done it. She misses her sisters. You miss your…’lin? Am I saying it the way you were taught?” 

Pulling the blanket closer to herself, Aravehn nodded. It did not truly matter if he could see, she guessed. “My blood. My brothers and sisters.” Solas had taught her the true words, but the misinterpretations from Keeper Deshanna still clung to her memory like the smell of sage and soft blossoms, the ache of rough bark under her hands. 

Cole continued. “Whispered secrets, a joke, it doesn’t matter because there is freedom in the not being seen, and now she has signed up for a life of it. Gold silk like the pillowcase her mother once embroidered and her sister dumped a pot of rogue on. Letters like the notes she used to slip past that old geography tutor in code.” 

She listened, enraptured, by the image of a tiny Josephine in a far off, sunny land, surrounded by sisters, faceless copies of her in various sizes. Aravehn had shared a bedroll with members of her clan but she’d called very few of them friends along the way. When she and Josephine had spent nights together, just after their arrival to Skyhold before either of them had quarters, Aravehen had been surprised at the ease of it. From both ends. No asking who should take which side or grumbling over blankets while the other tossed in the night. In retrospect, those nights had been the best nights of sleep she’d had since leaving the Free Marches.

“Cole,” she whispered, her voice choked. “Come to bed.”
