Castiel’s first lie to Dean hadn’t been about demon deals or souls in purgatory or anything of the sort. The first lie hadn’t been outright either - just a matter of the wrong words.

I am the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.

Castiel had not so much ‘gripped’ as wrestled mightily with the twisted, scorched soul. Dean’s darkness had resisted, fought, lashed out against Castiel’s light.

As he healed Dean - as Castiel’s own light caressed the ripped seams and stains and filled Dean’s darkeness - Dean struggled less, fought less, lashed and screamed less. He never quite cooperated, never gave in fully, and there was a spot deep within the ever-brightening soul that Castiel couldn’t quite touch.

but man, the way this episode plays out is just really emblematic of how Dean and Cas's relationship works for years. Dean asks to collaborate, asks Cas to let him help, so that they can work together and help each other with the problems they're facing.... and Cas just ghosts and is shocked_pikachu.meme that Dean is upset with him the next time they talk. it's such a fascinating, frustrating dysfunction, and one that's only ever halfway addressed.

which. like. it's not a difficult problem to address, is the thing! it's a problem that does have a solution, and one I absolutely believe they can work through if they actually sit down and have like... literally one honest, vulnerable conversation about it.

but they haven't gotten there yet and that's why we need a continuation: because Dean and Cas still haven't talked about what the real crux of like 89% of their issues is (and it really is literally just this for almost all of their problems)
