As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.

There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.

We have fought for decades to make it safer for people to be open and authentic about themselves, but we are not yet there. And even if we were, the closet would still be something we need to maintain for those who are not ready to reveal that part of themselves.

This is how I convinced my conservative grandma that the gays do also need marriage, actually. My grandad died when I was 4 and I asked her to imagine not being allowed to see him or make decisions for him or be entitled to an inheritance and she got very quiet and conceded the point. Marriage doesn't intrinsically mean anything but as a legal framework it is really, really important

This is apparently a hot take but saying “Credits to the artist, this work isn’t mine!” Is not giving credit

A credit is something that helps people find their work. You need to give at least the name of the artist. A credit often includes the work name, the artist’s name, and when the work was created. If you can’t even give the artist’s name, how are you helping others find their work and support them? There is literally no point in saying anything if you can’t do it properly

“All credits go to the rightful artist!” Don’t even bother with this if you can’t credit the artist properly. It’s almost as insulting as claiming the work as your own because it shows that you clearly don’t care enough about the artist’s career and work to find their name and properly credit them
