All Labs matter….. . .
•According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) for the last 24 years, the Labrador Retriever has been ranked (#1) the most popular breed, the longest reign of any breed in its history. . .
•There is no such thing as an English or American Labrador. There is only one breed with the different lineage producing different body shapes based on the purpose for which they’re bred for. Dogs from English lines are bred to be stockier, thicker, heavier boned with a shorter muzzles, broad heads and a thick otter tail. American bred Labs are slighter with an athletic shape, longer limbs and muzzle and in some cases lacking the double coat and thick otter tail famous with the breed. . .
•Labrador’s are the most utilized dog for guide service. Guide Dogs of America say that 70% of their service dogs are Labrador retrievers. Golden retrievers and German Shepherd’s make up the remaining 30% (split evenly) Guide Dogs of America find Labs to be the breed of choice, thanks to their strong desire to please. They’re also the right size, easily adaptable, and easily trained. . .
•Labradors actually come from Newfoundland, not Labrador, Canada. The Newfoundland breed were bred to smaller water dogs to produce the St. John’s Water Dogs (original labs). The breed looked much like modern day Labs, but with white muzzles and paws. . .
•With a combination of new taxes on dogs and a quarantine of animals imported into England, Canada caused the sale of St. John’s Water Dog to come to a screeching halt. With no more import and exporting of the breed, these original labs would eventually become extinct allowing the Labradors to finally be recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1903. . .
