Progress
4 months tumblr says since my last post. wow. What have I done in the past 4 months? I have been on a cruise to Alaska, I have been on a mission trip to Colorado and then youth camp in Tennessee. I'm still learning. I'm still waiting.
I know God has called me into ministry and I see that forming shape. Actually when I say 'forming' I more so mean that the dirt is moving... It is slow progress and I am trying to be patient. The hardest part is being content.
I'm trying to thrive as a young wife. I'm trying to make connections with other women but it seems to be a little slow. I had a moment a few nights ago feeling lonely. I then realized that even though Jesus knew lots of people, he had 3 close friends. My problem? Those close (girl) friends are hours away. I feel like something is coming.. and I'm just trying to wait.
My #1 job is trying to be a wife. I have now come to the point where if people ask what I do I simply say I am a wife. I have no care to tell them I work part time at a store and do invitations/announcements because that is not who I want to be known as. I want to be more. My dreams are large and I am waiting for an adventure.
"Simple Jobs"
Through out my college education I have been told by a very important professor that the world is going to challenge my view of what a woman is and should be. I had a real life personal encounter with that this week.
First off I have a bachelor's in Women's Ministry and a master's in Christian Ministry and people can take this one of two ways. The top question I get when I say I majored in Women's ministry is "Oh so you want to be a pastor?" and in my heart and soul I cry out NO because in 1 Timothy 2 the author speaks to the church that women should learn in all submissiveness in a theological setting. But my words just say "no, I want to work with a girls ministry".
I had the privilege to talk with someone in the area who works with people to look for women to be placed in the church. At first I thought this was a dream come true, however, I realized I met opposition in my theological mindset and what the Bible says. I was told some months ago that the more letters I have behind my name (M.A./ PH.D.. etc) the more power I have and the better it looks for me to get a job.. And right away I sensed the warning. Fast forward to this week. I was able to in passing speak to someone with connections and was told of a weekend job that I would be able to do a pulpit call with a local church. She mentioned that it is hard for women with an education to get a good job in the church especially with being in the Baptist Bible belt because the women tend to have "simple jobs". I responded that I was okay with those simple jobs and that I am currently at a church that I help morning and afternoon with the Youth and I am very happy with that. The conversation soon ended.
See here's the deal. God did in fact create men and women equal... but with separate roles. And in Galatians it does say that there is neither jew, nor greek, nor man or female but we are all one in Christ... but the context is in reference to salvation.
My #1 job right now is to be a wife. And hopefully if the Lord allows, a mommy some day. But right now I'm perfectly content with doing the simple jobs.
The truth about how I let my thought life ruin my proposal
This is the honest, raw, and transparent story of my engagement. The Lord is doing wonderful things in my marriage and this is my proof that no matter how much someone plans, hopes, expects, a perfect proposal does not create a perfect marriage.. or even a good one. And a horrible proposal is not a foreshadow of a marriage.
(warning: this is long and raw and uncut)
background: me and my sweetheart have known each other since I was 6 and he 8. We grew up swimming together and were best friends and ended up not dating or becoming official in any way until he proposed. I call it courtship. I was in school in Virginia and he lived in Texas where we both grew up.
Last summer, 2012, my honey and I discussed marriage. I loved him. He loved me. But I wasn't sure marriage was for me. I thought god called me to be single and after a slew of events we realized that we wanted to live life together and God gave me the option to get married.
It was July and we had already been looking at rings via online and discussed. My honey was coming to visit me in August. I found out my parents were coming to visit my sister in July in Texas and so subtly made the suggestion for my honey to have my parents over for dinner since it might be the last time he sees them before he sees me... ;) ;)
The day after my parents went and had dinner with my honey and his parents my daddy so.. so.. graciously? nicely? .. no.. anyway.. My daddy told me that my honey asked for my hand in marriage and that he would be proud to have him as a son in law. It was at this moment when I cried because it was becoming real. I then proceeded to text my honey and let him know that my daddy told me something & that something was that he had permission.
Obviously, knowing that he had permission and that he was visiting in like.. 2 weeks I was thinking there was going to be a proposal right?! We had it planned. That day after my honey flew in we were going to drive to D.C. which was like 3 hours away. We were going to see the monuments at night the first day.. order from Georgetown Cupcakes, and visit museums. PERFECT I thought.
So my honey flies in, we are so excited because this was it right? this visit was going to change everything. -skip to D.C.-
We are in D.C. and we are looking at all the monuments at night. it's warm outside, the monuments are all lit and the sun is setting. We get on the Lincoln memorial and just look out. At one point he gets in front of me and puts his hands on my knees AND MY HEARTS SKIPS A FEW BEATS and then he sits back down.. okay. that's cool. no biggy. There are a lot of people around.
We continue on to other sights and monuments.. take pictures of the lighted monuments and we are practically alone.. MY HEART SKIPS A FEW BEATS.. but we continue.
we walk back to the subway. end of day one.
DAY 2: this is it. We are going to all the museums.. we won't be outside as much sweating, (that's not romantic anyway) we spend a while in the smithsonians and get to the Holocaust museums. Of course he wouldn't do it in there, there is too much emotion for that. He suggests dinner.. hmmmm... but I suggest us not being with a bunch of people that evening. (obviously he's shy and so the most probably proposal would be alone) so we get chipotle as the train station and call it a night..
DAY 3: okay for reals now. We are heading back to VA. and as we pass all the exits for monuments I think that he is going to pull in somewhere he planned to make it seem like we were leaving but really not. no stop.. no pause. breathe. That's okay. I start thinking to myself you know what, maybe it isn't going to happen this trip. I mean he only asked a few weeks ago and there is still thanksgiving, and Christmas, and I came to terms that the proposal was just not going to happen. Because obviously he would have done it in D.C. as he is driving I'm holding his phone for the GPS and all of a sudden he gets a text that reads "So have you asked her yet"......................................... My heart starts beating but not with butterflies.
I say "you have a text message". he asks from who.. ( I will not disclose this information) . and I say you better read it.. he reads it.. exasperated sigh... and oh.... I am staring out the window silently saying goodbye to all what I thought would be perfect.. for the next 2.5 hrs we did not speak. I mean you could cut that tension with a knife. He wanted to pull over in a rest stop to talk and I said OH NO we are not doing this here. and that's pretty much all I said.
30 min. from Lynchburg I decide that I am not going to be angry. And I am going pretend like nothing happened. I ask him what he wants to do for dinner, if he wants me to make something or if he wants to go out. He says he wants to take me out. and I say fine and that I'm going to try to pretend nothing happened today. When we get home he tries to talk to me but I just take a bath.. for an hour. replaying over and over and over how we were at these beautiful lighted monuments at night and museums and I finally accepted it wasn't going to happen... but it was supposed to.
I let my thoughts ruin my proposal.
I was angry. I was bitter. This was supposed to be MY day. My time.. After my bath I confess, I cried. It wasn't supposed to be that way. It was supposed to be magical. After some calming down I got all dressed up, curled my hair, put on my pearls, went to Red Lobster, went and saw Hunger Games in the dollar theatre and I told him during dinner that afterwards we should go to Snowflex (a ski/snowboard place) which is on top of a mountain with a beautiful view of the city... hint.. hint.. he was like yea I would love to! (good cause this is what you have to work with). So we get to snowflex. and we sit down on a bench.. a hard metal bench.. that is facing the snowboard slope.. and he asks me how I want to spend the rest of my life And I answer that I want to be his wife and mother of his children some day.
Conclusion: This is not a story to bash my husband. This is not a story about how everything messed up. This is a story about how our expectations ruin our lives and how comparison really is the thief of joy. Looking back now I can laugh.. kinda. Looking back I have several things I have learned about my husband. A) he is not good with surprises..... and B) he's not good with surprises.
But you know what, surprises and setting doesn't make a godly marriage. From day one we were committed to spend more time preparing for marriage than our wedding.
A filmed proposal with the ring you always wanted doesn't guarantee you a good marriage.
A wedding with crystal and a 5 tier cake doesn't make a good marriage.
A dress does not make a good marriage.
I have only been married for 5 months but it has been in these past five months that God has shown me more grace than ever.
If you can't tell from my story, I struggle with selfishness. This has been something that is negative. I write this story because I don't think I am the only person who struggles with this. So many girls are confused by what make a good marriage. a pinterest perfect wedding doesn't make a good marriage. God does. I have a husband who loves me like none other. I have a husband who graciously sacrifices for me. I do not deserve him.
Marriage is a covenant that you make with someone else in front of God.
A proposal doesn't help that, a dress, cake, and décor does not help that. There was actually a time where I wanted to get eloped because I was tired of the planning.
My thought life ruined my proposal because I compared what was real with what was fake. I expected perfection, when I am just a sinner saved by the Sacrifice on the cross.
I write this to be transparent because I am not perfect and my sin nature runs deep. I write this because I am thankful that a good godly marriage doesn't depend on human efforts.
Prayer saves time.
I am in my second week of the last 8 weeks of my seminary degree. Looking back to the past year there has been much accomplished. It was only December 2012 when I finished my bachelors of Women's Ministry and I decided to start a 36 hour degree for Seminary because I knew I wanted more education but I wasn't sure how much. The typical suggested schedule was 4 semester with 9 hours each. 9 hours being full time. In the Spring of 2013 I took 9 hours because I was planning a wedding and didn't want to take a huge load.
After discussing option with my husband I decided that if I didn't have a job I was going to go full time into school and make use the time that I had. I did 12 hours in the summer. 6 hours the first 8 weeks and 6 hours the last 8 weeks of summer. It was during one of these classes that I was challenged in my prayer life. I learned that some statistics show that an average pastor prays 7 min. a day. WAIT WHAT?
the most generous survey said that the average pastor prays 37 min. a day. but 80% admit that they pray less than 15 a day. I was shocked. I mean yea, as a student who isn't in full time ministry I would expect for me to pray less than my pastor.. but what does that say if the average pastor only prays 7 min. a day.
This subject came up again last week as I started my classes. 5 classes. 15 hours. in 8 weeks. People thought I was nuts. But I knew that the Lord had blessed my time and had expanded it upon hours to accomplish it all. And I had no idea exactly how until this past week, more like yesterday.
I am reading Prayer: the timeless secret of high-impact leaders by Dr. Dave Earley. He presents the same statistics and he brought up some wonderful points. the main question that was considered in my homework assignment was Do I believe that God can do more than I can? Do things faster than I can? Do things better than I can? Do things more effectively than I can? of course all Christians would say yes. but do we walk the talk? If we honestly believe the above statement why don't we give more time in prayer and bible study?
Dr. Earley continues with how busy pastors and Christians are. We are in school, we have families, we have jobs, we have laundry, yard work, cooking, cleaning, ministry, and sometimes we feel we are too busy to pray.
But, if we really believe God can do things faster and more effectively than we can, why not tithe of our time? If we trust God with 10% of our money to provide for our needs why not tithe our time for him to provide to use our time more effectively?
I have knocked out 8 page.. 12 page.. and 15 page papers in a day all because of the Lord. I am determined to give God time each morning and I know He blesses me with the time to get everything I need to get done. Today for instance. I just finished a 8-10 page paper on 6 words about worship.... 8-10 pages... on 6 words... (first of all who does that one the second week of school?) But i'm done. And I have time to share this testimony with you because the Lord blessed my time. We are too busy to NOT pray.
If we really believe that God is who He says He is and He can do things faster and more effectively than I can.. then why do I claim I am too busy to pray? too busy to read the Bible?
Practicality- When less is more
I've been on a journey where I have been less consumed with material. On my last post two different people suggested "The Treasure Principle" by Randy Alcorn and I am now on my last chapter (a very short book and only do 1 chapter a day).
Here are the basics - God owns everything. I am His money manager.
-My heart always goes where I put God's money.
-Heaven, not Earth, is my home.
-I should live not for the dot but for the line. (the dot being the time on this earth and the line representing our time in eternity)
-Giving is the only antidote to materialism.
-God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving.
I sometimes feel like when a spiritual matter is presented it is harder to find practical applications and God has really shown me the practical side to this which begins .. When less is more.
The less clothes you have- the less choices you have to make- and the less laundry you have to do
The less house you have- the less you have to clean.
The less land you have - the less time you have to take care of it.
The less stuff you have- the less you have to deal with it.
How many times are we overrun with options? We have too many clothes. Too much cleaning. Not enough space to put everything in. Less is more. Do I think it's a good idea to save money? ABSOLUTELY. Do I think it's good to have a cap on your living expenses no matter how much you make? ABSOLUTELY. And the rest we can just give back to God. It's not ours anyways and why would we want to take care of something and deal with that responsibility. I have heard that money can't buy you happiness but it can buy you options.. but sometimes options don't make us happy either.
I wake up every day in a bed. With air. I get my coffee. I eat every day. I wear different clothes every day. I am so blessed. I have everything I need. Less is more.
MinimalistMe
For the past year God has really showed me what I thought was important in my life. Needless to say it was materialism. And guess what? It never satisfied me. It wasn't rare for me to buy 2 designer purses in the summer.. Some might say "that's it?" and some might say designawhat? And every week if not twice I would HAVE to go to TJ Maxx. It was literally next to my school and if I showed up early, I would go in.. Before I went home, I would go in. I would spend an hour looking through bags and shoes and clothes and try stuff on and sometimes purchase a lot.. and sometimes nothing.. every.single.week.
When I became engaged I realized that I cannot live the way I did because my fiancé at the time was such a hard working man I didn't want to stress him out with me being a financial burden. I worked. And my work paid for a % of my tuition. But I didn't pay for anything. I didn't pay for school, gas, food. Nothing. I paid for what I bought at TJ Maxx... and that's it. I was, and still am very blessed. I made a decision to start buying my own gas (hey it's a start). And I started treating my TJ Maxx runs as a decision my fiancé needed to be in on. I would even ask him what my limit would be going in and if it was okay to buy something. I wanted him to know I respect him and early on I'm going to respect his decisions. I started to treat "my" money as "his" money.. And then I realized.. I don't have anything..
When I gave my life to live for God; He became ruler of everything. I had a breakdown. In my car on the way home from work I started talking out loud.. "Lord this isn't my car this is YOUR car and I'm just driving it.. Lord I don't own anything, I'm just taking care of things for you.. " and at that point I started learning what it meant to become a steward. A steward is someone who manages another person's stuff. Everything is God's.. sooooo... on Earth it is my job to be a good manager of all His stuff that He allows me to use.
Fast forward a few months.. I am reading Radical by David Platt.. and it's just that.. Radical. I am learning what it means to sacrificially give..
After that I read 7 by Jen Hatmaker... AMAZING. I am learning what it means for me to decrease in order for Him to increase in my life..
I am discovering that sometimes God gives us excess not so we can live in abundance.. but in order to give to others. wow.
I am learning that stuff doesn't make you happy and money is better spent on people instead of things. I learned that tidbit from a wonderful woman Shannon in VA who mentored me when she would ask her 3 young children, "What's more important, people or things?". WOW. Such a strong concept. So here I am. Finding joy in giving to Goodwill. Finding joy in what it means to be a servant and to give sacrificially. Lord, allow me to always remember that people will always be worth more than things. I own nothing. I have nothing. But I have you; and that is everything.
#flow #forward #positive #beautifulsouls #letgo
Praying about a decision that could open up some opportunities. Such a new idea that ill be praying for clarity.
Fallen World
Lately I have been reminded that we live in a very fallen world where pain, hurt, and sin is all around. Between cancer, death, and losing children, there have been people all around me and including me that have dealt with these very things within the past 2 weeks. Going through my prayer time every morning I use the ACTS model. a page for adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication. In the A page I often spend more time on two things that I say about God.. That He is in control. And that He is Healer. As a human, I have a finite mind. I cannot wrap my mind around the things that He allows to happen. However, at the end of the day, God is the same as my very best day. When people get cancer, God is still good. And when people pass away, God is still good. And when things happen to children even when we don't understand, God is still good. And God is healer. God heals physically, emotionally, and spiritually. God mends broken hearts and broken spirits. God you are in Control.
God you are healer.

Can't afford to not pray
This morning I woke to many things going on.
VBS starts this Sunday and this is my first time teaching a class and I don't feel prepared.
Saturday my hubby and I are driving to Dallas to meet with a friend from college.
Thursday is July 4.
2 Seminary classes are ending this week which means: One 6-8 page book review One 15-20 page ministry application paper One group project (that is just in the classes that are ending) The other two classes I am in have 4 assignments this week. Between the 4th and Saturday being gone that leaves me with 4 days this week to do homework. I was going to post something this morning about how overwhelmed I am but I decided to wait and see what the Lord did to my hours today. I knew today more than ever I needed time in prayer to refocus my day.
After 6.5 hours of continual homework (minus a text/fb message here or there and a 15 min lunch) I completed both the 6-8 page paper and 15-20 page paper... it was more 14 pages with 2 lines going on the 15th page but I made the executive decision that it was worth my sanity to lose extra points on that paper.
God is so sovereign and I knew He would be able to stretch my hours today to get these two large assignments done. I plan on doing a lot of homework tomorrow as well but the weight of those papers are gone. though I be tired and worn and my eyes are probably bulging from typing at a screen for six hours I am so thankful that God is Lord over all including time.
Sometimes when we are super busy we forfeit time with God. That has been my biggest mistake in years past. I can't afford to at least not pray every day in the solitude of quietness. If I claim that Jesus is the most important to me then I will show that He is more important than due dates and deadlines.
all day everyday.
Couldn’t have said it better
Isaiah One
There are time when relationships seem dry and unless something is done about it nothing will change. About a year ago God challenged me to become more active in our relationship with seeking Him. Jeremiah 29:13 says that if I seek Him with my whole heart I will find Him. I decided to start reading through Isaiah with a commentary to learn more and I just want to share a few of the findings.
The first chapter is about Judah and the wickedness of the city. This chapter reminded me of America.
1:4- Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.
And then there is verse 15- When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you, even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.
Why would God do such a thing?
"God utterly rejects worship that lacks righteousness and obedience... As a result, their forms of worship in themselves were offensive and rendered useless in the worship of God. The external rituals in themselves did not please God; neither did the blood of bulls, lambs, or male goats, but rather a heart that was right before Him." (Woman's evangelical Old Testament Commentary)
As with the city of Judah, righteous worship applies to Christians today. We all know when an apology is true or false. God is no exception. God wants true repentance but He knows when it is false
#humility
Excess
I highly suggest this book to anyone who feels bogged down by the American culture and the "need for more". God has been teaching me so much about simplifying my life since August when I got engaged. It all started with the desire to simplify my life so I could be more independent from my parents and not need their assistance in school. ( I was also getting prepped for marriage and didn't want my then fiancé now husband to be scared thinking I needed so much). God then brought in my life the book Radical by David Platt. This book showed me so much about sacrifice and the thought "what if God gave us excess not for our pleasure, but to bless others?". Now I am reading 7. This book is an experiment where Jen experiments with 7 items for a month. In month 1 she only ate 7 foods. With this ideal she realized what luxury America has in choices and the poverty other parts of the world has. I am currently in month 2 where she only wears 7 articles of clothing (not including undergarments) This has made her realize how much people put value on impression. I am super excited to read the rest of this book and I really feel like the Lord is using all these things from the past 10 months to show me something in a future ministry.
Lord, break my heart for what breaks yours. Let me not fall into this idea that the American Culture is about materialism. Like Jen, let the things around me decrease so that you may increase.
Amen.
live to the hype
As I've been spending this week in the Dallas area there are so many new things. As from the picture before, everything looks luxurious. In a world where everything is for self and for gain who is there to stop this snowball effect? People might say, "well if God didn't want me to have it then he wouldn't let me".. we live in a world where most people think that God is a santa clause and that if He didn't want us to have something we wouldn't have it. God is not a whisper in the background. He is a righteous judge and he lets material destroy us. When we get that new item we don't feel satisfied, we just want more! God lets us get what we want and guess what? WE. STILL. ARE. NOT. SATISFIED. Satisfied? is that a place we can reach? satisfaction? contentment? are those just ideas or are they attainable?
Lord, in the book of Romans you hated the sin so much that you LET them fall into their passions and desires and guess what?! You destroyed them! You knew what was best for them but they didn't want it. The Romans didn't want to listen to you so you let them fall.. and fall they did.
"For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions.." Romans 1:26..
Lord give me the strength to not fall into this world of vuittons, Mercedes, name brands.. I have sinned so much in this area. I have let these items consume me.. lord bring me out of this consumption and into your truth.
So many things, so little time
So many things God has blessed me with here recently.
1. I'm married to my best friend.
2. I am in grad school
3. God has blessed us and provided for us so much already in these first 3 weeks!
4. God is teaching me many things. (every have a situation where one idea occurs and then 2 other things follow that confirms that God might be calling you to something?!)
There are so many things I could say about God but what would you like to know?
