Events: Pinch, Sully, Martyn

Next weekend kicks off the season for Absentminds in Leeds with Koreless, Appleblim and Rustie. However, that's not the only big night they have lined up. February looks set to host another attractive lineup with Pinch, Sully and Martyn.

I'm personally most excited for Sully - I've wanted to see him ever since I heard '2 Hearts' and 'It's Your love'. Check them out below..

Tune of the Day: Radiohead (Jacques Greene Remix)

Jacques Greene seems to be on a bit of a mission at the moment, with a new label and lots of great new releases like 'Flatline' and this. A while back he remixed 'Lotus Flower' by Radiohead, makes for very easy listening.

Focus: Koreless

                            I've been waiting a while to write about Koreless. I honestly don't know why I haven't already posted about him, he's probably my favourite house producer at the moment. 

The first tune of his that I heard must have been about 6 months ago when I heard 'Away'. You quite often find stuff that stands out a bit, but Away made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Since then my interest in him has grown and grown, leading me onto other great productions such as 'MTI' and 'Up Down, Up Down'. As well as this, he's not averse to remixing as he shows in his remix of 'The Look' by Jacques Green. Its a massive understatement to say he does the track justice.

What's most remarkable is that Koreless, real name Lewis Roberts, is just 19. He's not even a full time producer yet - his day job is as a naval engineer. Add this to the fact that he's making his music in Glasgow, which doesn't have a developed house scene, you've got one very special individual.

Big News

Jacques Greene has recently announced that he is starting his own label, named Vase-Forever. Slightly strange name I have to admit, but upcoming collaborations are pretty exciting.

His first track, 'Flatline', with ANGO was first played on Annie Mac's radio show a couple of days ago. It's pretty much what you would expect from Greene - no change in direction, but more of the same. Not that I'm complaining. Hear Flatline here.

There's also a collaboration with one of my favourite producers, Koreless, so watch this space.

Weird, yet wonderful.

This is a great song from Gil Scott-Heron (who unfortunately died last year) and Jamie XX, but it's the video that made me post this. Whoever made it did a cracking job.

Skream!

Skream is well known as one of the originators of Dubstep. Back in 2006, his tune 'Midnight Request Line' made the voice of a underground genre heard - its air time in 2011 is a testament to that. Skream's remix of La Roux's 'In For the Kill' catapulted the genre into the mainstream, a real favourite of many.

However, at some point, and to some fans, Skream arguably lost his way. I am personally not this single's biggest fan, although someone's got to love it. More recently, it's obvious that something in Oliver Jones' head has clicked, sparking a return to his origins and the production of his latest EP, 'Phatty Drummer/Gritty'.

Not only is it absolutely brilliant, but proof that Skream hasn't lost it. At all.

Events: Vagabondz

Anyone that's been to a Vagabondz event before knows it's about as close to Carnival as you will get outside of Notting Hill. Always great fun, always a great lineup and the upcoming events surely won't disappoint. 

Very excited for the 4th february date in Leeds, particularly Congo Natty and Top Cat, but all the others look like they could be worth travelling to.

Tune of the Day: Blawan

Blawan's released some huge tunes this year, most notably 'Getting Me Down', voted by Resident Advisor as the tune of the year, a verdict I don't find too hard to fathom. 

The tune of the day, however, is from Blawan's most recent EP called 'Peaches'. A much heavier sound than which we have seen so far but brilliant all the same.

Tune of 2011

So, what makes a good tune? Hard hitting basslines, catchy vocals or delicate melodies?

2011 gave us lots to consider in all 3 departments. For me, I loved hearing tracks like Rustie's 'After Light', Girl Unit's 'Wut' or Hudson Mohawke's 'Thunder Bay' for their ability to get you in the mood and dancing no matter what.

It was also great to hear some tracks that stood out because they were just that little bit different, but great all the same. A prime example of this would be Mosca's 'Bax', mixing it up with a 90s Garage feel.

However, I don't think there is another tune that quite matches up to Julio Bashmore's 'Battle for Middle You'. Not only a great track but with great vocals to match. With words like 'we go'n get up, slap your feet, we go'n get down' you can't really help but move to it.

The kind of tune that makes hairs stand up on the back of your neck again and again. Huge.
