i DO believe that a good writer can make mischaracterization work. oh there's a character who doesn't normally cry? figure it out!! dissect the character. make the situation cryable for them. make that character cry ugly tears even if it goes against their very nature. YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK!!!
When a writer can successfully push a character to their limits and/or force them into an unexpected situation it makes for a damn good story.
I have over 20 bookmarked fics I expected I’d read while away but I still haven’t touched any of them. And then I went and added two new stories to the list so fuck me.

Spreading some “Flambae’s real name is Chad” propaganda because honestly the sheer amount of people that deny it purely based off the stigma surrounding the name as well as the fact he was born in Afghanistan (which is really just cultural appropriation by saying he can’t possibly be named Chad because of his birthplace) is concerning.
We don’t know his entire backstory! The information we have been given is his name, his birthday, the place he was born, his powers, the fact he has a niece (who we don’t know anything about other than she’s related to Flambae), and the fact he lost two fingers after a fight with Mecha Man. For all we know, his parents could not even be Afghanistan natives and were only there long enough for Flambae to be born before moving again! Maybe one or both of his parents were some kind of super hero soldiers so they lived near the Dispatch universe’s equivalent of a military base and moved when they were deployed somewhere else!
Just swallow the pill and accept that Flambae stood up to Robert, looked him in the eye, and told him his real name was Chad.
Not Zahir.
Not Hakim.
Chad. Because that’s the name Chad chose to say.
He’ll always be Chad in my fics—that’s the name he gave Robert and that’s the name I’ll use
Also the name Chad means 'protector' or 'defender' and I think there are some cool family angst opportunities there
Imagine his parents looking down at their screaming newborn baby, so new but already so strong and so fierce—maybe even sparking a little—and thinking, Use this strength to protect the weak. Use this fierceness to defend the timid.
Maybe Chad’s name was a wish, an unspoken expectation that he struggled to live up to his entire life. Sure, the name’s gotten a bit of a silly reputation in the past decade, but he’s never forgotten the real meaning—the one his parents told him so many times when he was little.

one of the weirder parts of joining this fandom was seeing all the people who collectively decided to rename a character that literally introduces himself - just because we know he’s Afghan.
