Bojack is socially anxious, deeply self loathing , lonely, clingy/codependent/ sometimes he's a dick but he is doing better at least that's what he tells himself.

He desperately wants to be a better man and a good friend to loved ones. His love language is buying things and trying to give advice and comfort when he sees people feeling blue. He is deeply empathic to those similar to him abusive parents/depression as he understands how damaging it is. (ep examples of : live fast diane/stupid piece of shit/the face of depression)

He has major mommy issues which can lead to ending in not great relationships he's prone to want to please authoritive women as he spent 50 years trying to please his abusive mother and has a deep seeded need to be taken care of

Is very protective towards kids and young people after losing his beloved costar Sarah lynn in a bender and becoming sober his brain finally put together the abuse she went through with her stepfather that he basically ignored something he deeply regrets.

Sarah lynn is his biggest regret he loved Sarah lynn in his own bojack way and he strives to be a kinder and a better role model for young people who loved his show

Has a podcast dedicated to drug abuse. As well as Child abuse and how to better protect child actors.

I was rewatching hit show BOJACK HORSEMAN and I forgot how much I loved Diane’s storyline. It’s boggles me how many people don’t like her!!!

I feel that a lot of the dislike for her is rooted in sexism. Audiences are somehow less sympathetic for a struggling female, than an active male abuser (cough, cough, Bojack).

I love star trek because it says that humans are good, but not innocent. Because it frequently acknowledges how much blood we've shed to get to their version of the future. Because it doesn't use that fact against us. If anything, it makes the message more powerful.

There is an upsetting pattern of stories where mentally struggling protagonists are "beyond redemption" and the only ending that can bring them and/or others peace is if they lose their lives. Obviously characters (as with people) should be held accountable for their harmful choices and no one owes them forgiveness, but to make their existence as mentally unwell characters punishable by death feels ableist. Could they not face consequences in any other way that feels deserved while also leaving the open ended opportunity that they can become better?

People struggling with mental illness, addiction, and trauma are already more vulnerable to su*cide ideation. When the characters that represent them are ceremoniously killed as a grand gesture of sacrifice, how are viewers supposed to interpret that for themselves? They deserve representation that sympathizes with them as victims, confronts them on the effects of their harmful actions, and let them know they're capable of change.

Watching a 90's and early 2000's show is waiting with baited breath until a male character gets SA'd and you get to find out if they're gonna play it as a joke or never acknowledge it as a problem.

as progressive as bojack was it bugs me how the show never calls Ana out and nearly treats her as the smart one that got away from his toxicity when for once he was a victim .. and the whole Flip situation like no my boy does not deserve that abuse .
