For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.
Myra Cheng et al. "Sycophantic AI decreases prosocial intentions and promotes dependence." Science 391, eaec8352 (2026).
terrifying when you watch a movie or a show or whatever & youre like that was fun but it felt a little redundant they didnt need to hammer the point home that much & then you go online & theres thousands of people going that was so weird i did not get it what did that mean google.com ending explained please?
Okay I was thinking about kinda this earlier today. People who expect to be spoonfed meaning and a moral message from media are treating it like the two things that actually do those things: children’s books and religious sermons. (I say sermons and not religious texts because those can be interpreted about 5000 different ways)
So yeah people spend their whole lives basing their belief system around a book that maybe they haven’t even seriously read and they’re just listening to a dude quote passages and summarize stories and then explain exactly what it “means” and how this thing that may or may not have happened 2000 years ago “applies” to your life. And then they go to the movies and there’s no dude who pops up at the end to tell you what it meant so they go to google looking for answers because that’s what they do in their own life when they have a question, they go to their pastor instead of actually figuring out what they think the correct course of action is or how they feel about it.
its gonna be so nuts when our generation of old people is shuffling around with big stupid meme tattoos imagine being a personal support specialist in 2080 and peepaw has a bee movie script sleeve and youre twenty years old and delivering pills like dude what is that and he goes Its from a movie about a jerry seinfeld bug lusting after a human woman who looks like flo from progressive who is still a prominent american cultural figure and you say OK and then you help him plug into his VR headset to play for2nite the sequel to fortnite and he mains former president hunter biden and then you go on lunch break and pay $75 for a ham and cheese sandwich
i still think about the fucking quesadilla terf
iirc it was like this terf who was absolutely fuming because her brother was dating a trans woman and she started claiming that she was clearly male socialized because the terf made quesadillas for dinner and the trans woman was like "wow :) this is really good, what is it?" and if she was a REAL woman she would instinctively KNOW what a quesadilla is
anyway it turns out the reason the poor woman didn't know what it was was because the terf had used hummus instead of cheese for some fucking reason so it wasn't even a quesadilla

im curious about a specific generational divide
regardless of you being queer or not, did your parents ever gave you the "if you turn out to be gay it would be fine" talk, before you ever had the chance to say anything on your own about that?
gen z, yes
gen z, no
millenial, yes
millenial, no
gen x, yes
gen X, no
baby boomer, yes
baby boomer, no
because it happened to me and im wondering if this was a product of the ongoing cultural change around gay issues. before i ever had the chance to say to my parents "i am this" my mom was already sitting me aside to tell me "if there is anything you want to tell me, i want you to know ill accept you no matter what"

Ouuhh I see the water it’s right there on the post,, I’m so thirsty ouyghhhhhw just one sip for me ooouuuuuu
Girl, what are you talking about? Are you feeling alright?
Btw the heat *is* why we see water that's not really there, but mirages aren't exactly hallucinations so much as optical illusions:
It's just the changing density of the air refracting light weirdly, so it looks like there's a reflection of the sky on the ground, which our brains often interpret as a pool of water. It can also happen upwards instead of downwards, especially at sea, when the air is much colder near the surface and a warm front appears above it:
Which, btw, is one possible explanation for ghost ship sightings, so that's fun :)
