Well I like having options. I like switching between Netflix, Hulu, and Discovery Plus depending on what I’m in the mood for, because that way there’s so many movies and TV show options, and I end up watching nothing because there’s too many options. Options give life variety, and so why wouldn’t I want y’all to have options?? This isn’t your run-of-the-mill 30 days of Pride challenge here.

(Or maybe it is, I haven’t done one of these since my days writing fic on Livejournal.)

Instead of having one set of prompts and a calendar to follow, we have three of them! Three sets of prompts to choose from! Hurray variety!

Dear Aunt Lee,                            1/15/15

I’m still not sure how I’m feeling right now. Everything has gone by so fast, I’m only now settling into the awareness and full realization of your death and how it’s affecting me.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw you, but in my mind, you look like you did in my childhood. Grandma says that you were very frail and thin when you died, and that the nurses said it was cancer even though you never went in to be tested. She said that you stopped washing your hair and looked like an actual Halloween witch. So, maybe my memory of you is better because you were beautiful, in your own unique way. Your soft, frizzy hair was always the darkest black. Your glasses were wide and thick, slightly tinted like Hollywood stars of the 1950’s. You always had a cigarette in your hand and wore bold prints. It was the 1980’s and early 90’s, but I like to think that you never strayed from that fad because it suited you best.

You and Uncle Buck would always host the family Christmas party in your basement, complete with a well-stocked wet bar and the pictures of Native Americans on nearly every inch of the wall. Your toilet was the only one I had seen with the blue dye cleaner and it made your house even more exotic. You’d bring out huge books of pictures from when you went to Egypt, Thailand, Africa, and all over America. I remember in one of them you were holding the reins of a camel in Egypt, with one of the pyramids in the background. I was very impressed that you could handle something so big.

There were a lot of things I’ve recently learned about your life, only by means of your death. I saw your photos, your face, when you were a young bride of only 17. I heard the story about how Uncle Buck actually proposed to another woman first, got rejected, and then asked you. I heard that you only found that secret out years later from his mother, of all people, and that you sold your engagement ring to pay for my grandma’s divorce.

In my memories, Uncle Buck was usually stingy and cranky, but there’s such a tender photo where he’s carrying you outside and holding you so gently. You’re both laughing. I know he loved you and I know that you loved him. I also know it was hard for you to let him go and even harder to accept his death and your continuing life. I can’t imagine living without my husband and I can understand why you were ready and had been ready to leave for a very long time.

Aunt Lee, I hope that I will see you again, somehow or someway, but if not, thank you. From my whole heart, thank you for being a wonderful part of my life.

Review of Popular Movie

Saw a movie tonight. And even though a very young child talked and cried throughout the entire movie, I'll try my best to tell the summary. Spoiler alert, I guess. The story is about a family-oriented, straight, American, W.A.S.P. man who just can't catch a break! His mother died when he was young, his father is in prison, and his wife looks like she's fourteen. In an effort to get his dad out of prison and back into his life, our hero travels back to his hometown, where haunted memories and secrets of his past still remain. After his father's untimely death due to an accident, he struggles to find his way home, but always seems to be in the center of tragedy and panic as humanity feels the after-shocks of the atrocities created in our past. Seriously, our hero can't ever catch a break! Until he does, much later in the movie (near the end), when a bond is created between him and Jennifer Lawrence (or some other fat actor like her*). They help each other to survive past mistakes of mankind and of their own lives, while trying to secure a greater future for the next generation, all while Ken Watanabe watches on, looking very concerned. I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in this remake of Gojira (props to them for at least having Ken Watanabe say it). But I agree with Sara Prz, it was way too character-focused and on such a boring character! Too much Lieutenant WASP and not nearly enough fat Godzilla (yes, I checked: no thigh-gap). I thought it could have been cut down because it was too coincidental and too complex for what it should have and could have been (the same weird thing that killed his mom also killed his dad 15 years later, and golly gee, he just happens to be the kind of soldier that is perfect for the job, and has also been in nearly all the places these creatures were, and also the giant make-out bugs have a fight night with Godzilla *exactly* where he and his family live - what a coinkydink!). This review is way too long now. Let's just say, it's better than the one with Matthew Broderick. His roar is still cool and he was the true hero of this story. And I don't mind him chunky. *this joke is mostly for Stacey
