This boy, Millicent thought, is a paradox and a half. Perhaps the festival committee was going with a funhouse theme of opposites when they commanded he run this booth, or maybe someone was playing some hilariously cruel joke on him. âHas anyone ever told you youâre more likely to catch flies with honey rather than vinegar?â The old saying slipped from her mouth easier than breath, though she hadnât felt the urge to quote it in quite some time. âThat is if you care how many cheeks leave with paint scribbled on them.â She plucked the folder from his hand, opening it to leaf through the pages, but for a moment she kept her eyes on him. Curiosity always was her downfall, surpassing any urge to adhere to societyâs whims, and only after she stared her fill did she glance down to the drawings inside. âAre there any monkeys in here?â Her thoughts flickered back to years before⊠tiled floors and fluorescent lighting⊠the telltale sound of a tattoo gun buzzing⊠With a clap the folder closed again. Her eyes found him again, wondering if he would be annoyed that she didnât wait quietly, hoping she didnât laugh to show how much she would enjoy it if it did. Millicent wasnât here to ruin his night. On the contrary, she wished to see him enjoy his time as much as the other revelers. He just seemed to need a bit more prodding. âOr perhaps you know how to freehand one yourself?â
"Once or twice, perhaps." He shrugged. "But I can't say that I've ever held any particular interest in catching flies. I've always found that there's far better ways for me to spend my time." Severus had never been a people person, something that was painfully obvious from his attitude. Being nice and accommodating simply wasn't who he was. Running a face painting booth at the festival was not going to change that. "The only thing I care about is getting out of here. If that means there's a lack of face painting then so be it. I don't care." Once she had taken the folder from him, Severus took the cashbox and placed it on a shelf under the small table. He wasn't about to let the money get out of his hands. He could only hope that he'd get a cut of the money at the end of the day, although he wasn't exactly holding out for it. This was a Ministry event, after all. "I don't know. I wasn't the one to put it together. You'll just have to look and find out, won't you?" His eyebrows raised in surprised, his expression a combination of insulted and horrified. "Do I look like someone who'd paint a monkey on your face?" He paused for a moment. "Didn't think so. As soon as one of the students finishes up you can ask to see if any of them can do a monkey. I'm just here to take the money and make sure they don't mess around."
