That he spent his life chasing a man responsible for her death and he finally got him and it all doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things (lovely quirk in noir novels <33), because everybody forgot about Eddie Winter; because everyone moved on from the death of Jenny; because everyone involved has long passed; because he didn't even know her, just the idealised version of her that the original Nick held in his fondest memories that now haunt the post war private eye.

The only way I see Lucy’s and Cooper’s relationship is like that one estranged uncle that all the adults know about and don’t tell the kids about for mysterious unknown reasons, but at the one in a millennia time said uncle actually shows up to the family gathering the most naive kid there goes up to him and proceeds to get SMACKED with A: Terrifying Presence and B: an ungodly amount of forbidden family lore because fuck it we ball and all these other adults genuinely suck
Innocent Kid and Estranged Uncle proceed to get into trouble for the rest of the gathering while also prodding into more family lore, much to the dismay of literally every other knowing adult especially fuckass Hank we hate him
