my favourite wikipedia article is the middle english article about frogges
“A frogge ben a wee beeſt wiþ foure legges, þe whiche liveþ boþ in water and on lond. He ben broun or grene or yelwe, or if he be tropical, he may be dyuers coloures. He haþ longis and gylles boþ. He haccheþ fro an ei and he þen be a tadpolle. He groweþ to be a frogge, if he be nat eton.”
nothing makes me laugh like “if he be nat eton”
I don’t hate the concept of ebooks per se but what bothers me is how our society is shifting from actually owning entertainment in tangible forms like books and CDs and DVDs and game discs, to having to download everything so basically we’ll get to the point where everything is intangible and all of our property can be taken away by a website crash.
#yeah this is mostly the problem#and stuff like. ebooks that can only be read on one companys app#music that can only be streamed from one place and doesnt let you actually download the files#stuff like that#like sometimes its like you cant tangibly have anything even your own digital file#idk where i was going with this but yeah its capitalism (via @ouidamforeman)
It’s so much worse than this too…
When no one has a physical copy of media. When every copy exists in servers owned by a rare few, to be rented out to us. At that point they don’t just control the media, they control the message.
If you don’t have a copy of a book, they can change the words at will. Strip meaningful works of everything they don’t like. Remove the art from our collective consciousness. Change its meaning or delete it from the world.
If those few don’t like the message of 1984, for example, then they can just do exactly like the Ministry of Truth and literally change history by changing its words. If a powerful song inspires revolution, it can be replaced. If a memoir reminds us of a past that they would rather us forget, it can be changed to suit their narrative. If a painting shows us the human spirit, that spirit can be crushed. If a story is told by a minority voice, it can be silenced.
Not actually owning the great works of humanity anymore means losing our past forever.
That doesn't mean it has to be hopeless though. It's not all or nothing. Books and music and art are expensive. Technology means it's accessible in much greater quantities to people than it ever was.
So please, check out ebooks from your library as fast as you can read them. Stream music on your car ride and be happy. Flip through old paintings on the internet.
Save you money for the things that move you. The books that inspire you, from writers that passed centuries ago. Your favorite albums. That print of your favorite painting, or even the print of your favorite characters from your favorite online artist.
Suck up everything you can get your hands on. Read every trashy romance or pulp fantasy book till your heart's content. Then save your bookshelves for the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Give It a place of honor and remember it.
Stream for fun. Save what matters.
And don't let them take it from you.

When I get home: UGH! must get out of all clothes as quickly as possible!
When I'm doing laundry: UGH! why is everything inside out!?
Marie Curie’s Notebook
Marie Curie’s notebooks containing her scientific research, which are Radioactive and must be stored in a lead-lined box in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Curie’s corpse is also radioactive. Her coffin is lined in an inch of lead. Both will remain radioactive for 1,500+ years.
