“seinfeld is embarrassed”
mosaic; figure; vessel (?)
Cultures/periods: Aztec or Mixtec
Production date: 1400-1521
Field Collection by: J Mayer
Findspot: Mexico
Provenience unknown, possibly looted
Seated animal, with open mouth mouth and protruding tongue (possibly representing a jaguar), bearing a shallow cup on its back. Carved in cedro wood (Cedrela odorata) and covered with mosaic made from turquoise, malachite, pyrite, and mother-of-pearl (Pinctada mazatlanica) shell. Pine resin adhesive.
Although the identity of this seated animal is not certain it has always been interpreted as representing a jaguar. Along with the eagle, the jaguar and symbolized power and courage and was associated with the elite warriors of Aztec society. Both elements evoked death and as such were applied to stone vessels (cuauhxicalli) that were used to receive offerings of hearts and blood for the sun.

Ultra Kaiju Mononoke Picture Scroll Exhibit
These are fantastic! I hope they publish these in a book soon.
@thecreaturecodex @a-book-of-creatures. These are phenomenal.
Beautiful. I wonder how many series are covered? I see monsters from Ultra Q and Ultraman in there. Any Ultraseven or beyond?
“"Ultra Q" and “Ultraman” celebrated the 55th anniversary of broadcasting this year. Approximately 80 monsters appearing in both works transform into “Mononoke” and march through a picture scroll that extends over 10m. An unprecedented scale of art work was born, drawn with special painting materials created from natural materials.“
This seems to imply just the the first two entries, but that it does have all of the kaiju in them systematically. Which does appear to be the case. They even have the little monkey mummy from the Dodongo episode, and both Gavadons.
