Happy birthday videogames
I imagine Nedzu under all that calm is 100% done with the staff’s bullshit.
((It’s a company dinner and not picnic because Nedzu is an animal so the outdoors is his home aha ahaahahd8wmd9wbd))

What I appreciate most about Us
(spoilers ahead)
Adelaide is the main character. By that I mean that while she is a mother and a wife, she is not defined by those roles. In fact, it’s the other way around. Gabe is Adelaide’s husband, and the kids are her children. Adelaide is by far the protagonist, a role in which women so often get stifled by their roles in the family. How many movies can you think of where a woman protagonist was a wife and mother and wasn’t completely driven by those roles? Jordan Peele and Lupita N'yongo really did that!
The relationship between Adelaide and Gabe is fascinating. They are both good parents. They protect their children as best they can in an unthinkable situation. However, they rarely protect each other. There are times when Adelaide gets captured or ventures off, or Gabe gets captured and neither partner does much about it. And this is awesome because it means that they both have their priorities straight. They trust each other to protect themselves. They look at each other like adults. They protect the kids because their kids and they trust their partner to take care of themselves and the kids when they can’t. Mad respect for this relationship dynamic.
How unbelievably human Adelaide is. At the end, we find out that Adelaide is actually a doppelganger, and while there are clues throughout the movie to support that, Adelaide and Red’s personalities do a lot for the overall meaning of the movie. It’s relatively easy for us to accept that Adelaide is a doppelganger, what’s harder to accept is that Red was not. Red mentions how they went crazy down in the tunnels, but Red was a newcomer to the tunnels. Yet, she is just as monstrous (if not more) than the doppelgangers. This furthers Peele’s point that the concept of “us and them” is so fucked. We can see that Adelaide is a doppelganger when she bares her teeth and screams while killing Red, but what was there to show us that Red was not a doppelganger? Not much. Which is exactly the point.
Us spoilers below!!!
I don’t think Red Adelaide remembers that she used to be the one living in the outside world. She seems to have forgotten about it, but she still has some vague, subconscious memories of her childhood. She knows warm food that isn’t raw rabbit exists because she once ate it, she knows about fluffy toys that kids receive at Christmas because she received them, she got the idea of a human chain out of the t-shirt she was wearing as a kid and the subconscious memory of the ad she saw when she was still living with her real family. Also, she made all of the Tethered wear the same type of shoes that she and her doppelganger were wearing when they met as kids.
Red says that she and the other Tethered noticed that she was special, she thinks that’s all it is, her being special and having a revelation, when really she’s special and different because she’s initially not one of them. Even the concept of God - how could she know about it when there doesn’t seem to be any TV or book in those tunnels? Because she learned about it when she was a kid and remembers the concept.
Quick little Us theory
I love how the characters’ wants are reflected into their Tethered selves. In their name and behavior. For example, Jason/Pluto; he wanted a dog, he said so at the beginning. So the Tethered Jason’s behavior was that of a dog and Pluto is the name of Mickey Mouse’s dog obviously. I’ve seen people point out him and the relation of the other characters’ wants reflected into their Tethered selves. But I haven’t seen anyone touch on Kitty’s Tethered self, I noticed something while watching. Kitty wanted to be a movie star, she even got plastic surgery to pretty herself up. Did you notice when she cut herself in the mirror on her face?? It reminded me of the Glasgow smile. She didn’t go all the way but how she was doing it reminded me so much of it. Who else, more infamous, had a Glasgow smile?? Black Dahlia. People thought she would eventually become an actress and according to some, she aspired to be one. And guess what Tethered Kitty’s name is? Dahlia. I’m also aware Kitty had a scar on her face and perhaps Tethered Kitty/Dahlia was trying to replicate it so she could take over Kitty’s life (like what happened with Adelaide and Red), but this name theory just stuck out with me too, it makes sense.
One thing I love about Us is how fucking hardcore the kids were… a lot of the time, kids in horror movies are the innocents who need to be protected, and are shown always running away/only fighting in defense. Not Zora. Zora was ready to fucking KILL those bitches to save her family and THAT’S WHAT WE WANT IN OUR YOUNG WOMEN.
Now I know everyone is talking about how awesome Lupita is in ‘Us’ and while she is fantastic, I want to talk about this kid.
Evan Alex plays Jason Wilson and Pluto, who is Jason’s double. The reason I want to talk about this kid is because I think he’s going to be a megastar when he gets older. He is fantastic in Us. When it playing Pluto, he has to act animalistic and he crawls around on all fours. His performance is terrifying, creepy and unsettling. He was fantastic and I can’t wait to see what he does.
