OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I love the contrast of how Celie and Nettie speak and write. I love the growth and evolution of the main cast of characters. I love how real and authentic it felt to me, a black woman from the South myself. I think everyone should read this book, even if you've already watched the movie. I'm so glad I read both these wonderful books. Both are about a brave girl who defy their parents (and in the case of Binti, her people and their customs) to do what is right, whether for others or for yourself. In the end, both Jam and Binti are instrumental in bringing about change for those around them. Both books are quick reads but are still very enjoyable. Short but sweet. Some hard to swallow truths of reading:

Not every book is written for you.

Just because you don’t enjoy a story doesn’t make it bad or worthless.

Just because you don’t enjoy a certain writing style does not make it bad or worthless.

It is not your duty to directly tell a writer you didn’t enjoy their work if they didn’t ask you for your feedback.

It is your duty to do you best to understand whether or not a story has been written for you and review it appropriately.
