Now you know.
I must reblog this comic from time to time to make sure I skip the theatrical curse.
I never thought about it the first time I saw this comic, but now I suddenly find myself asking: what curse is on the *actors*, to compel them to perform in this play? The crew, the ushers, the director? Does a theatrical troupe decide to stage ‘The Duke in Shadows’ as expiation after some sin? (Perhaps someone spoke the name of the Scottish play, or they performed ‘Cats’.)
Or, more disturbingly, perhaps there are theaters here and there dedicated (sacrificed) to the play. There is always a production of it running somewhere, every night, and people just…drift in to play the roles. Sometimes you just know you’ve made a terrible mistake, and then you find yourself searching for local auditions. (You’ll get a part. Everyone does.)
one thing that has always bothered me about theatre, and broadway especially, is that ever since i was little theatre has always been “a girl’s things”. it’s shown as girly and young boys who are interested in theatre are assumed to be gay or are made fun of. and yet, in major theatre productions, you hardly ever see women. women aren’t known producers, they aren’t recognized playwrights and composers, and plays- mostly musicals- hardly ever have more than two female characters in the spotlight. it’s yet another “girl’s thing” that’s dominated by men.
it has been over 3 years since i made this post and it has easily been my most successful one, and yet despite me repeatedly saying otherwise, terfs keep reblogging it. so i’ll say it again
trans women are not men. this post does not accuse trans women of any wrongdoing within the misogyny of theatre society. trans women, and all transgender people, face far more discrimination than cis women in the industry, and we cannot ignore this when talking about it.
only recently has broadway opened up to casting genderqueer people in named roles, and a quick google search will show you that there are only two actors talked about. women, on the other hand, have been on the stage for years. you could ask any theatre kid to name a broadway singer and they will most likely cite a woman. even if a person wasn’t familiar with broadway, the names patti lupone, idina menzel, angela lansbury, and liza minnelli might ring a bell.
i still stand by my statement made 3 years ago. the misogyny of the industry is rampant and dominant and it needs to be fixed. but it will not, will never be fixed properly until cis women stop placing blame on our trans sisters

Being a fic writer means you have so many fic ideas, most are AUs of preexisting works and you start one and get a couple chapters in before you start another and abandon it completely

of course the first preview had to have a giant technical issue within the first ten minutes of the show. i call that rannells disease since his first hairspray show (and broadway debut) had a giant technical issue too
