My heart goes out to the families of the loved ones they’ve lost 20 years ago. I remember heading into the sixth grade and hearing about it from a teacher…I remembered how nervous and how scared I felt when I saw on the tv when I came home early from school when Sweeney picked me up during lunch. I would ask myself, “Who would do such a thing?” Now, 20 years later, it still rings a bell. Bree may not understand it all because she is still a baby (she turns a year old November 7), but I will explain it and teach it in a way so that she could understand. May we never forget what happened.

A year ago today, Mr. George Floyd was murdered and publicly executed by one callous police officer who knelt on his neck for more than 9 minutes. His death sparked a revolution for justice. Now, that callous police officer named Derek Chauvin (On April 21, he was found guilty on all 3 charges) is behind bars awaiting sentencing.

Mr. Floyd’s story doesn’t end here because we have to speak out against racial injustice and brutality by the police; and to make sure that it doesn’t happen to any black person. Those are human beings. Chauvin’s accountability is the first, but it’s definitely not the last. There are other police officers out there just like Derek Chauvin who needs to be held accountable for their actions. Mr. Floyd’s life mattered.

And to conclude…a moment of silence for George Floyd. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time because they have lost a brother…an uncle…and more importantly, Gianna lost her father.

I recently watched my favorite Disney movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the night before my 18th birthday, kind of as a goodbye to my childhood since it has shaped so much of it these past few years. I love its animation, film scores, the cathedral, and most recently its themes of social justice. Ever since the Black Lives Matter movement has had its resurgence, I’ve realized this movie is more relevant than ever before. I strive to fight for justice for black people, Romani people like Esmeralda, people of color everywhere. I’m planning to carry that through adulthood for as long as I can.
