It's finally time, I am watching the 1995 Sense and Sensibility for the first time after having just finished the book. I will be cataloging my thoughts here. I'm kind of nervous because I enjoyed the book but felt really badly about Marianne's whole plot and really didn't like the way the narrative treated her so idk how I'm gonna feel after the movie. Also I paid $4 to watch this version so it better be as good as people say.

Oh I like Edward going out of his way to not actually steal Margaret's room. What a sweetheart.

Margaret certainly seems to have more personality than in the book and she is adorable. She reminds me of the girl who played Lyra in the much hated adaptation of The Golden Compass

Have we done away with Elenor's art in this? I'm seeing a lot of Elenor watching other family members rather than doing the things the book says she does. Marianne has a whole speech in the beginning of the book complaining that she doesn't think Edward is nearly passionate enough about Elenor's named interests. Idk I feel like she's so good in the book about hiding her emotion that being caught crying is an unnecessary change. They don't need a caught crying scene to be believably in love.

We got both Marianne's complaints about him being passionless and only reading is mentioned so I have to conclude they've abandoned Elenor's drawing.

Fanny foreshadowing Edward's ruin but thinking Elinor will be the cause is great. 10/10.

They've killed off Mrs. Middleton!? But she's so pivotal in showing how Lucy ingratiates herself.

Is he gonna tell her himself!?

Mrs. Middleton and her kids have been replaced with yappy dogs. How happy for my ears. Is this common among adaptations of this? Should I expect the character to not be in the new one too?

I do think they could do more to show how Mrs Dashwood and Marianne feed off each other's energies. As it is Mrs Dashwood comes off as having more sense than in the book. It'll be hard to believe Elenor would be afraid of her emotional reaction to anything too to tell her.

I cannot hear a word of Alan Rickmans delightful performance. I've had to turn the captions back on, which is a shame because they seem quite broken on the YouTube version ive rented.

I don't like how much of Brandon's story is spilled early through gossip.

I feel like Marianne's walk and fall can certainly be better done. For one the lead up to it is joyful and playful, and the fall happens in racing back home playfully enjoying the rain. It leads into a daring and exciting rescue that is like a fantasy to them. Its not angry tugging on an upset child and sarcastic remarks on the beauty of nature, the remark on nature is genuine and awe-filled. Marianne already gets so shafted by the story, you don't need to do her more dirty by ruining one of her best scenes.

Ah we're getting Lucy early then. I wonder if the filigree basket scene will be for Margaret instead or be done away with entirely.

I don't mind the rearranging of the timeline with Lucy, though it doesn't hurt quite as much coming before Edward's one visit where he wears the ring with her hair.

To tell them of the engagement over Marianne's weeping body is an abominable act of cruelty I would never expect of Mrs. Jennings.

I have reached the point where I am realizing the joke of Mrs Jennings thinking Brandon is proposing to Elinor when he is offering help to Edward is not really likely to happen.

The consistency of Marianne always saying it will not rain before it does is just really good. Margaret said it the first time, but it being repeated by Elinor before Marianne getting sick really makes it seem like this is truly a lifelong pattern with her and makes it all the funnier.

At this point in the movie most changes are just owing to the condensed timeline.

The movie certainly does more to convince us Brandon is a proper rival to Willoghby. The parallel of him carrying her back is clever.

I do feel better for Elenor not having Mrs Jenning over her should telling her Marianne is certainly dying the entire time she is sick in the movie though.

Are we not getting Willoghby's "i heard she's dying and must beg forgiveness" drunken visit? Well I guessed we may not when they delivered most the relevant information earlier.

I have to repeat that the movie is doing a lot more for convincing me Marianne actually likes Brandon before the wrap up than the book did.

The direction of not allowing her to run from the room before crying is a cruel one. The secondhand embarrassment is intense.

there is a screen reader / magnification program that is the only one the low vision clinic knows of with these features and it is $650 Canadian Dollars behind specific approved vendors that require you to be geographically close to them and get government approval of a degree that I am only just now reaching after being visually impaired for going on seven years. I feel normal about this

... there is a genuine, GENUINE need for you to code this and put it at a more accessible price point than $650 Canadian Dollars which I also just learned is a SUBSCRIPTION FEE AND NOT EVEN PERPETUAL. if you are reading this and able to code I am begging you. would genuinely change lives

I'm watching the 1995 Pride and Prejudice for the first time and am only on episode 2 but I absolutely see what the fuss is about. The way the internality of the characters is captured on screen is something I rarely see in any adaptation of anything.

I finished it this morning and failed to update so I'm here now. It was amazing. It captured most all my favorite moments from recently reading the books, though I'm still chewing on the decision to show Darcy in London rather than let the audience sit in suspense as Lizzie does.

Anyway, I'm 90% through the ebook of Sense and Sensibility and will be watching that one next in preparation for the new one.

Metaphorically, yes. One dragon had married the witch she brought back to her clutch, and she said that meant their two souls had become one, which was basically the same thing.

The other dragons in her brood said it didn’t work that way, but she was able to breathe pure magic afterwards, so it at least worked that way for her.

I went to the Grand Canyon when I was depressed and I literally forgot the whole thing. Like, the only reason I even know I was there is that I have photographs of myself standing in front of the Grand Canyon with dead eyes but i have absolutely no memory of it

People talk about depression like it’s just being sad all the time but straight up your brain stops working and sadness is just one of the many, many consequences of that

so i saw someone on here talking abt sheriarty in the context of orpheus and eurydice, and that james wouldn't have looked back, but sherlock would've. and i think that, while i do see that, i don't think sherlock would have even gone down to the underworld at all. not in a "he doesn't care about james" kind of way, but in a "he wouldn't even be okay enough to consider it" kind of way. but james would. james would march right down to hades and drag sherlock back up kicking and screaming if he had to. he's determined.

you guys i changed my mind, upon reflecting on the scene when james is hurt on the ground vs the scene when sherlock is.

sherlock wouldn't look back. james would.

when sherlock is shot and hurt, james drops everything to help him and only goes after xiao wei after sherlock yells at him to and because mycroft was there. his only thoughts were "is sherlock okay".

yet, when james is hurt after the mountain explosion, sherlock, although he does quickly run his hands over james (a way to acknowledge/check up on him a bit), he runs after silas without a glance back, even when james yells his name (also dónal that yell was spectacular im crine).

sherlock wouldn't look back. he'd be sure of himself, sure james was okay. james wouldn't be able to help it.

Sherlock did what he wanted Moriarty to do when he was hurt, while Moriarty wanted Sherlock to do what he did when Sherlock was hurt.

I was so mad at Sherlock for leaving him for real though.

just imagine being james moriarty when john finally comes in picture. not only did you lost your best friend, because you disagree on morals (or whatever the reason for a breakup is going to be), but he moves on without seemingly any effort. it's so easy on him that he finds someone new to replace you, someone who clearly doesn't match his level, someone who clearly doesn't understand him the way you do and still he prefers this someone over you. while your life constantly revolves around him, obsessively trying to get his attention, trying to convince him to join you, because you wanted it to be both of you. god jealousy must be eating james alive

lots of thoughts on suvis line after the bath scene of “I made him different and now he can’t go home” and how that directly parallels the finale and how each of suvi and eursulons story’s mirror each other

i think it’s really interesting how the importance and goodness of being apart of the world and changed by it is a central theme of the story but is often portrayed as negative. It essentially bookends and runs through the whole story, -eursulon being cursed by the well intentioned kindness of ame and suvi in giving him food home and a bath, steel comparing the change in suvi from her connections to ame and eursulon to a sickness- but even in the final discussion between eursulon and the Great Bear he saids ” you have undone the mistakes you have made, you have completed a quest…” and what what mistake has eursulon made? is it really just believing in the ideals he saw in Sir Curran? wanting something he wasn’t supposed to know to want? outside of the isolation of the world he grew up in? i can’t look anywhere in this story without absolutely drowning in parallels i’m so not normal about this
