PINNED IS A WIP
When he got the text, he plain rolled his eyes. He didn't think this was the BEST idea, but it was hard to get Jim off a bone. He wasn't the same kind of vindictive in general. He hoped Jim got some kind of peace out of it.
little kids are so fucking funny man. had a kid that couldn’t be any older than like 8 or so come up to me today asking where our dinosaur books where, and when i tried to gently redirect them downstairs (where our kids section is) they very matter-of-fairly informed me that they’d already read every book down there and are ready to learn about the “secret, grown-up only dinosaurs” now
He'd usually get nosey, but he didn't think it was in his realm of interest this time.
Well, Lupin would take it as a win on his 'acting' skills that Sherlock thought he was worrying more about Fujiko rather than...Tomoe. Even thinking of her name had him fishing out a cigarette quietly, nodding somewhat stiffly to the consulting detective's explanations. "Good point," he muttered about the stolen photographs. "Maybe I oughta do a background check on this family, could be a secret hidden behind those photos that lead to family treasure the other person feels they're owed." He arched an eyebrow, keeping a simple smirk.
Sherlock was unaware of Tomoe. Which meant he was a bit unaware of Lupin's most recent doings. Sherlock would not admit to over self-isolating so much that he hadn't put mind to national papers if Lupin's adventures had made it into them. There was a bit of a backlog pile of newspapers somewhere in the flat...
"That would be most helpful." To Lupin perusing a background check on the dead woman. Would save him the effort. And Lupin was intelligent enough to do it in his stead. He would glean the actually useful information. Unlike some investigators he knew.
"Might be. There was a story somewhere in rural America about an elder fellow that had an otherwise unknown fortune from unknown sources that the inheritance of is currently under dispute. People kill for less." An arch, but accurate statement.
He placed the broken frame pieces precisely the way he'd found them. Making a couple of adjustments to his satisfaction before,
"The deceased--" He gestured to the nearby body. "--had a favorite framing store, uncertain if relevant. There was also a shadow of something rectangular leaving an impression on the backs. Must've been some sort of folded paper. No impression on the backing. No photos to investigate either..."
"The photos might indicate a clue or location that connects to the suspected note. The attacker did not have time to decipher."
@atruegentlemanthief Lupin had quietly watched as Sherlock explained all the details, following along as eager as one could be about murder, until his friend mentioned this was the act of possibly another woman. Certainly wouldn't have been Fujiko, she was never so clumsy with her work. As he walked over to have a better look at the poor dead woman on the ground, he wished he could close her eyes without messing up the crime scene. He couldn't help a small grimace, his mind racing with possibilities when he went to check the shoe. Of course he didn't touch it, knew better than that, but he did seem to freeze when his thoughts were caught in an impossible conclusion. Because he knew that was all over, of course, she was dead. The women she'd groomed were free now, too, far as he knew - but were there still some around that had that sleepercell bullshit going on? Could just be a regular murderous thief, though, but he couldn't help but overthink, frowning as he pushed the fake glasses up closer to his eyes to stop his fidgeting. "Well, I can say for certain it isn't Fujiko~," he said with his easy air, trying to put on a smile. "This is real sloppy, honestly. Not a novice, but certainly not someone who does this for the joy and thrill of it." Lupin would only ever kill in self defense, and if this other woman wasn't even armed, there was no excuse to have shot her except to selfishly hide their identity. Or someone never afraid to kill. A hired job? He rubbed his chin in thought. If he was muttering his thoughts outloud to himself, he hadn't noticed.
"It is. I do not think it was Fujiko." Since that apparently needed clarifying for Lupin's nerves. "The scuffle leads me to believe a relation or close friend. The photo and missing photos would indicate some information was stored on them. Little else is disturbed." He'd drifted to the destroyed photo frames. Gloves on and able to lift them to look them over. Feeling confident, as he often did, he could place them back in their original state once done. "Murderers do not typically steal family pictures otherwise."
The cardboard backings were intact so he took note that they were all made by the same manufacture. And took to tilting them around in nearby light to see if he could reveal any other imprints on them.
"If I were a betting man, money is involved. Not sex or hate."

atruegentlemanthief:
Lupin kept his hands in his pockets to avoid the urge to go rummaging around out of curiosity, himself, leaning away to watch Sherlock work. “Pristine is one way to put it,” he said with a slight grimace at the sight. Not that he hadn’t seen worse, but…
“I sure picked a great time to come find ya.” At least it wasn’t a crime he was being framed for. Lupin was dressed in a darker suit and wearing glasses, a less than elaborate disguise but people around here didn’t really need much to not recognize him.
Only one inspector would know him from looks alone, really. And one consulting detective. “So what happened here, anyway?”
There weren’t many that would fully recognize the criminal here, no. And Sherlock had just enough moral ambiguity to let him live. Unless it was a crime in progress by Lupin. Then he might track him down just to tell him ‘I know it was you’ than to get the other in prison. He’d take Lupin’s goofy thievery over Moriarty’s violence and mayhem. Both were challenges, but one had significantly less maddening risk.
He could see the restlessness in Lupin’s fingers and gave him a sideways glance. Behave, please.
Then back down and around. “The police think a home robbery gone awry. Burglar comes in, shoots a woman who sees their face, they flee. Very run of the mill. However, the rummaging is very pinpoint.”
He gestured toward the photo frames removed from walls. Broken upon the ground with removed photos. Then to a path from another room of furniture that left scraps on wood and indents on carpet to this one. “They also had a scuffle before she was shot in the chest--high and middling, but not very precise. It was a panic, but not impersonal...Despite the scuffle, there’s no blood or flesh under her nails. Merely bruising to arms and wrists. Like they were grappling, with force, but without desire to truly harm each other. I doubt she knew the other, likely another woman, had a gun.”
To explain his ‘female’ assessment he pointed to a lone shoe in the room the displaced furniture started. The shoe was near a waste bin with a broken low heel, dark blue in color. Might have been a discarded broken shoe owned by the woman on the ground, but Sherlock had already decided the size was too large.
Usually he would outright say his observations, but Lupin was a closer man than most so he was willing to say his process out loud instead. Also, Lupin was not unintelligent in making his own observations. He didn’t mind letting him add his input and confirm his own observations. For fun.
Surprise hovering over Sherlock's shoulder. ‘Y'got an ID on the victim? ’
Admittedly, little spooked at first. He was still not fully adjusted to his non-superhuman senses. And he'd been very deep in the distraction of analyzing said body on the floor there.
Quick to fully realize who exactly was hovering behind him after that, however. Between smell and voice at that range.
"Not as of yet. I was reading the scene before I went rummaging the pockets. Thankfully, the Inspector kept things pristine for me." Answered dry and drawl. Fishing non-latex gloves from a coat pocket to pull on.

And? I enjoy a good cuppa. Don’t know what you’re implying.
[He knew, okay, he knew, but he was gonna stand there (ramrod STRAIGHT) with his hands behind his back like he’d never paid for overpriced tea and ambiance.]
Any luck with that barista you fancy?

The beetles were important.
[Gives him a look.]
And I say again.
There you are.
Long as you don’t start hanging out in front of cafes looking looking like you can’t be bothered with the entire- OH and never mind look at that I just saw into the future.
